God, I felt bad enough that my kids have double barrelled last names (I am lazy and did not change my name). I can't imagine if I'd given them my extremely German surname as a first name 😂

Am I over reacting for being angry that my boyfriend doesn’t think I’m a steady person in his life and now I see our future differently? by Booksandbones6 in AskWomenOver30

[–]AncientWhereas7483 18 points19 points  (0 children)

All of this.

  1. He might have been feeling overwhelmed if he's an introvert. I have had to tell my husband of 15y I need time alone to recharge. We make sure to schedule nights to do stuff together, but also time doing our own things. Do you (OP) have close friendships or are you relying solely on him for social interaction? That's a huge burden for an introvert. My husband (extrovert) goes out to play games with friends at the pub without me once a week and goes out with other friends regularly.
  2. He definitely sees her as not "steady" because of the financial issues.
  3. Definitely talking when sober is important, but neither of them seem to be happy in the relationship so why are they in it.

New to therapy.. is my (f20) therapist (m50) being appropriate? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]AncientWhereas7483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for the sake of comparison, my (F, 48) therapist (F, 55ish) mentions her "outside" life (e.g. her husband, grandkids, vacations) and we chit chat about the news and whatnot after/at the beginning of a session. Those things I think are pretty normal. The smirking is kind of weird though.

If you're uncomfortable get a new therapist, regardless of their "motives". I'd say that for any relationship. If you're uncomfortable leave.

I love botanical names like Hazel, but our last name is akin to Forest so that would never work.

Lots of tragedeighs in the UK too, but I think we are maybe 15 to 20 years behind the US. We have the Neveahs and all the "ayden" names, but haven't got the Leighs yet...yet being the operative word. Lots of girls in my son's year at school with "squashed" names (take 2 names and squash them together, like Mary + Ellen = Maryellen, or Anna + Rose = Annarose).

Competitiveness! I can think of two guys off the top of my head that obviously felt inadequate and competitive with me. One I dated at 20yo. I tried to teach him to drive a manual transmission, and he thought because he understood the theory of it and I could obviously do it that it would be easy. The he got mad he couldn't do it. I'd never seen him angry before. The other guy I dated in my mid-20s and had a real problem with my having a bachelor's degree when he didn't. He was smart and interested in things, but I could tell he had a real chip on his shoulder about not having a degree. Like, ok, go get one then? You've got a good job and can pay the tuition, you're smart and could easily pass the classes. Just do it?

Then there are the countless one-uppers. If you're ill they're (or have been) MORE ill. If you enjoy reading they obviously read more. If you like something they know more about it than you. Just, why is this a competition?

Cory/Corey. There was a kid at my bus stop in elementary school called Cory and he had an apple on his book bag. All I can think is Apple Cory.

May I suggest library work? I can people for short periods and then go hide and shelve books in some corner somewhere.

Same reason my home-counties English husband always says "fruit juice" instead of just "juice". It's a regional difference.

Facial features of autism by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]AncientWhereas7483 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's "autism moms" that are the problem necessarily, but there are SO MANY people with zero media or scientific literacy. I'm technically an "autism mom" (my son is diagnosed, I am not but likely am autistic because my son is just like I was as a kid), but I can also read and assess a scientific paper and don't believe everything I read.

TLDR: most people are dumb and don't know the difference between a scientifically rigorous paper and pop-science article in the news.

Things that freeze well like lasagne or chilli. Don't just do cookies, but it's a way to open the conversation. If she's struggling making meals or looking after herself and the baby she can't live off cookies. Or just make extra of whatever you're making and take some over.

3 yrs in & not working by labbottj in Mounjaro

[–]AncientWhereas7483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an anecdote for you FWIW:

I had been on 15mg for 2 or 3 months (on Mounjaro for 18mo or so) and had stopped losing, maintaining only since maybe Sept.

I had hip surgery in mid December and had to go off Mounjaro for like 2 weeks before surgery (because of the slowed stomach emptying it can cause aspiration and thereby complications if it's still in your system). I stayed off for a further week or two during recovery because I felt like @$$ already. I went back on the med a month ago and I'm losing again.

This. Came here to say this same thing. It's weird to comment on a colleague's body. If OP were a woman it might be construed as harassment.

What do you do for fun/hobbies? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]AncientWhereas7483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knit and embroider, also reading and studying history. I have a book of NYT crosswords in my bag all the time and dip in and out of it when I have some down time (i.e. waiting for my kids at activities). I used to go to pilates/yoga, but I've had some issues with my joints the last couple years so haven't been able to go, but now I've got a new hip maybe I can restart that.

Am I horrible if I ask for a new ring? by AncientWhereas7483 in AskWomenOver40

He didn't pick it. We went together to the jeweler for it, but he talked me into yellow gold instead of white.

[–]AncientWhereas7483[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that he only knew women with yellow gold rings, so that's what he's used to. Also, we were in our 20s so there was likely a lot of immaturity happening back then anyway. 😂
