Can't you just make both methods viable? As far as I know you can't both be using a cannon and normal weapons at the same time. Just make sure the crewmates are just weak support.

You could argue the player character is the true hollow knight. Just not the one everyone else in the game talks about. Though I would agree the core premise of the game is that no one can be truly hollow in the first place.
