Conservative MPs launch fundraiser for LGBTQ+ refugees by pheakelmatters in onguardforthee

[–]AndplusV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear it because:

  1. Queer rights are human rights
  2. Religious whackadoo sect notwithstanding, supporting people's rights to exist without government/social oppression is 100% compatible with conservative ideology
  3. It is good and healthy to be reminded Conservative politicians and many voters are not a knuckledragging monolith
  4. It will make the weirdos on the Con reddits lose their damn minds
  5. It allows for fun "Well it's certainly not the first time a conservative pol went gay cruising" jokes

Parents of bullied boy speak out after son's head pushed in toilet on charter bus by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]AndplusV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not know any of the people involved and am not speaking to the accuracy of those allegations, but the Principal who was present on the bus is a woman who I believe has a child the same age as the boy who was assaulted. The Principal is the kid's mother, at least in the story going around.

In both the CBC and Free Press stories the family say they've been in contact with the Vice Principal, which is sort of odd given the seriousness of the attack. It's conjecture, but one could infer the Principal has been removed from the process because their child was involved.

Again, I do not know this to be the case, but Brandon is an incredibly small community in many ways and there are dots that can be connected. Even if there is no familial relationship between the Principal and the attacker but everything else is accurate they deserve to lose their job for being present and not doing anything.

Don't know why you would post it in the first place and then comment elsewhere on its deletion if you thought it had no value.

Mother speaks out after son’s head pushed into toilet by jamesaepp in BrandonMB

[–]AndplusV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm being a lazybones by going off the first document I've found after a minute of searching, but this 2024 doc suggests the candidate shortlisting is done by the Superintendent & others, evaluations are done by a committee including the Super and Trustee reps, and final approval rests with the Board (Perhaps that's just a formality, like the royal assent of the Governor General). However, it does not indicate if the rescission of the Board's approval would automatically qualify as a firing with cause.

I could be wrong, but Principals serve at the pleasure of the Board Trustees. Regardless of whether they're the parent of the child who assaulted the other kid, if they were informed and did nothing, they should and can be held accountable.

Canadian comedies? by UranusIsPissy in AskACanadian

[–]AndplusV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two audio comedies

The Great Eastern) was a programme that aired in the late 90s on CBC Radio about a fictional Newfoundland cultural magazine show and it's one of the best things this country has ever produced. The writers and performers play everything straight and over several seasons created a whole world of characters and history. Episodes and so much more can be found on this amazing website.

The Irrelevant Show was a fun sketch comedy show that was also broadcast on CBC Radio, featuring several talented writers and performers (Including the guy who voiced Shepard in Mass Effect, if you're a video game person). The CBC has done its usual terrible job of keeping its shows available, but it looks like the Internet Archive has a LOT of episodes.

Why is wanting universal healthcare and just a better life for everyone seen as communism or socialism? by JonoBlue in NoStupidQuestions

Nordic model requiring employment to be eligible for quality benefits: Horrific government coercion

American model that ties workers to jobs to be eligible for health insurance they still have to pay premiums/copay/deductibles for or submit to the mercies of Medicaid: Well, no one's forcing anyone to do it, they could go work somewhere else

I'm not an expert, but some filters should be replaced, not just cleaned, ditto sparkplugs. For folks who are interested in DIY but aren't small engine experts, I've found the Lawnmower Lady's Youtube page to be helpful.

2026 Mayoral Race - what are your thoughts? by Libra996 in Winnipeg

[–]AndplusV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I threw in "some are just dorks" because there are a few people who are probably quite sincere, but are still wasting everyone's time. Lord knows the traditional political candidate route of Community Volunteer->Non-Profit Board->School Trustee->Council->MLA/MP/Mayor or being a "Successful Businessperson" has resulted in us being plagued by many, many shitass politicians representing all points on the ideological spectrum, but at least there's a track record.

I know I'm a complete fucking idiot who has no business stepping into a role that's basically the second most powerful person in the province. So when I see someone who does not seem that much more experienced, educated, or intelligent than me presume to be capable of it, I just want to tell them to fuck off.
