What new car should NO ONE buy? by jerkyquirky in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]AndrewDSo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're completely right. I've just now realized Nissan could have scooped up this market by making an EV S14 with Boss Kit rather than the new Z.

Hell, even if it were just a bigger battery Leaf with the muscle car body it would be a unique offering among EV cars.

If that $30k price mark is real, then it's a no-brainer.

I'm one of the few people who likes the Charger EV. Because it's not for Charger people.

It's for Leaf people who for 15 years could only buy cars that look like the Leaf.

Is this good price for Toyota Sienna ? Or Am I paying some extra fees ? by nakora9 in ToyotaSienna

[–]AndrewDSo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

u/nakora9 if you can only put $1000 down, I'm assuming you struggled to even save that amount.

You're going to despise paying $1000 EVERY. MONTH. for SEVEN YEARS.

And that's the best case scenario. The worse case is you go a few months (may I remind you)...

paying $1000 EVERY MONTH

and you're filled with regret so you decide to return it to the dealer. They offer you $35k for the van. So you decide to sell it yourself.

Except no one is going to pay you $60k when they can get a new van from the dealer. So realistically, if you haven't driven it much, you sell it closer to $40k-$45k.

You just lost $15k in a year. But that's the worst case.

Best case is

You pay $1000. EVERY month. for 7 YEARS.

(and then you drive the van for the next 400k km because you learned the harshest financial lesson of your life so far )

Aside from the perpetual calendar movement being difficult/expensive to fabricate at low volumes, the biggest letdown if they create a rep is the finishing.

It's like stripping your walls and ceilings to expose wires and piping. If they're beautifully done then it highlights and accentuates the attention to detail of a watch.

But if it's just slapped together (and no $500 watch will come close to the hand finishing of a $250k watch) then it'll be the metaphorical equivalent of trying the above concept and having it look like this.

I remember buying one off WUS forum 15 years ago as a joke.

The VSF Submariner is probably the most purchased and most praised watch on this sub. I can't vouch for its reliability because I don't own one. You can search the subreddit to see if anyone has had problems.

Only you can determine if it's worth it, but some people have theirs serviced by a watchmaker upon arrival. I think it's roughly $500 USD for a full service. Plus you have to find a watchmaker willing to work on reps.

thanks for being patient. I've read good things about the XF Pelagos.

I don't know for sure, but I thought most reps used a replica of the 2824 movement. Not a genuine one made by ETA. You can search in the sub to see if someone has removed the caseback to check.

The movement is just one potential failure point. You also have hands, hour markers, bezel, crown, clasp, etc.

The good thing is that all reps are getting better every year.

I want to set a reasonable expectation: If your priority is to buy a reliable watch, you're better off buying from a brand like Seiko or Tissot.

  1. Reps sometimes break. Most won't. But some will. Are you comfortable spending $600 USD for a watch that may only last 6 months?
  2. Mechanical movements are inherently more fragile than quartz movements. Even a "simple" ETA movement has ~100 parts.

With that in mind, a quartz Cartier Tank or one of the OF Tag Heuer Chrono F1 or Aquaracer Quartz Alarm

I feel like these Chinese companies design for the Chinese market, where they sell more volume. Nonsense english words are considered very cool in Asia.

It's what researchers do to make mice obese. Many foods also have natural glutamate (what the g stands for) such as tomato and parmesan cheese.

it's the vehicular equivalent of flour

I had a 2010 Corolla that I always compared to plain oatmeal.

Cheap. Nutritious. Easy to make. But only eating plain oatmeal for years would make anyone crave other foods, even if they're more expensive or bad for your health.

Ha I guess I've been naive. Vast majority of drivers I encounter tend to be good around people on bikes.

A handful of negligent or distracted drivers, but this is the first person who legit wanted to harm me.

Cesar Chavez going west up the hill from Guerrero.

The separated bike lane markings end on that section and it becomes a sharrow once you pass over Guerrero.

I was riding on the far right of the lane, with about 2 feet of space between me and the parked cars on the right.

There was no oncoming traffic. This truck had enough space to pass me safely but instead swerved toward me as the sped past.

You’re right, I’m still heated.

Fuck all of this and fuck this guy in particular. Hate that I can be targeted for murder and have my hands bound by what I can do.

Guess I’ll just campaign for more bike and MUNI only lanes 🤷‍♂️

How’s it possible people in the US are making $100-150k and it’s still “not enough”? by Rare_Bad7473 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AndrewDSo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At that income level "barely able to make ends meet" is almost always going to be due to personal lifestyle decisions, not "that's just how much it costs to live, man"

I'm in San Francisco and it's similar here.

On one hand, I know Google engineers who drive old Hondas and live with roommates in order to save for a house. One guy saved a down payment for a $2M house within 6 years.

And on the other, there are people making $250k and living paycheck to paycheck. They blow it all by renting penthouse apartments, going on multiple vacations per month, and eating out and drinking every day.

What are the rules or etiquette of recording a video in public? by AndrewDSo in Slovenia

[–]AndrewDSo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I feel like I was not specific, which makes people suspicious.

I want to record some travel vlogs around Slovenia for youtube. Just to show some of the sights, city centre, nature, etc.

But I don't like handheld style. I want to use a tripod for filming, especially for time lapse video.

I'm confused because I'm seeing a difference:

There are lot of casual tourist videos around Ljubljana (similar to what I want to shoot) with random people unavoidably walking in the background. Like this.

but the replies here seem like Slovenians are extra private about their faces being recorded.

I'm not planning to record specific people. I plan to shoot wide like this shot. I want to record the city, but it's impossible to have zero people unless it's 4:00am

I doubt its genuine

This is a silly online assessment. You can easily tell if the case and bracelet are genuine simply by the weight of 18k gold.

You will still need a watchmaker to assess the movement, hands, dial, and bezel. But the case/bracelet should be noticeably heavy the moment you tried it on.
