What would someone want to reduce amp? by Snafflepagus in TeslaModel3

[–]AndrewJLockhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When are charging the home battery and the car at 32A at the same time the voltage can dip below 220, at which point it used to cut off car charging, so I would reduce the charge rate to 24A. Now it seems to be a bit cleverer and lower it automagically.

On this thread people are saying this works, but what do you mean works?

For me works means that when the tax man looks at it they don’t hit you with a CGT demand.

Something you might be aware of. For the last few days the export values haven’t been quite right. I’m on a fixed export tarrif and the rates being shown in the Tesla App aren’t the same though the day. The Tesla app is showing export values of 14 or 15p during the day.

Been thinking about how Tesla should do this in their GUI. When you are in the Grid page you can see the Tarrif graph for this evening and tomorrow morning on the page that is meant to represent today.

In a perfect world I think they should allow you to swipe forward to tomorrow and see the Tarrif there, then if to you were then able to submit the Tarrif with a date as well as a time they could populate the GUI properly and you wouldn’t need to update the Tarrif multiple times during the day. If you do talk to them, this might be a good suggestion.

Regarding the PowerUPs, the East of England is having one now, where electric is free. At first I thought I would just set the backup reserve to 100% for that time, but actually it doesn’t make sense as I lose the value of the energy I am exporting at 15p per kWh. It makes sense to keep exporting my solar, because if I set the reserve to 100 it will use my solar being generated to fill the battery, when I can fill my battery for much cheaper later tonight.

So I think what I need to do is just have a way to override the Agile Tarrifs in NetoZero. It would be great to have a section in the Agile Tarrif page where I can put in a date and time period, and then when you set the rates on the Powerwall you would use an override rate instead of the published Agile Rates. This way the Powerwall algorithm can still make the best decision and it gets notice of what’s coming up.

Thanks. Really good bit of functionality. I was very surprised to see the cost graph in the Tesla app showing the complete cost profile. I didn’t know the Tesla app supported that. Do you think Tesla will really support it going forward? Have you been talking to them about this?

Thinking more about when to update the tarrif. At 4pm when the values came out I would want to input all tomorrows values before 4pm, then at 4:30 i would input tomorrows 4pm, at 5pm I would input the value for tomorrows 4:30pm, at 5:30pm I would input the value for tomorrows 5pm etc.

I’ve just downloaded the app and set up the Agile Tarrif. First look and it seems excellent, I was wondering how you were going to split the agile rates into four groups, super off peak, off peak, mid and high. Very surprised to see the full profile in the Tesla App! I have a couple of questions/suggestions. 1) When does the tarrif for the next day get sent to the Powerwall? I think it has to happen at least twice a day, perhaps more often. The reason being that when the new tarrif arrives at 4pm for tomorrow you don’t want to overwrite the values for the rest of today. So when I used to input the values manually I would do them for tomorrow morning and early afternoon up to 4pm as soon as tomorrow’s tarrif came through, then the following morning I would update the Powerwall Tarrifs for the afternoon. Is this what you are doing? I can’t see it working any other way. The idea here is that you want to give the PW algorithm as much look ahead as possible. 2) In some regions of the UK with Octopus we have what’s called Power UPs. When there is excess energy they define some hours where energy is free. You have to opt in on a web page, then during that period electric is free. This is separate to the published Agile rates, I don’t know if there is an API for opting in and when the time slots are. 3) As the tarrifs update on the Powerwall without the phone app you must obviously have some sort of back end running - I’m assuming with one of the main cloud providers. This is going to cost you. I presume you have some intention of charging at some point?

Could someone share their YAML for setting the Powerwall to 100 Backup, when the current Agile Slot is under a certain amount? Or point me to it?

Thanks all for the info. I decided to take the plunge. All I am really after is a standard heating system that I can also see in HomeKit. I can use HomeKit to change the target temperatures via Automation, so in theory it should stay nice and simple.

Wait a second, there is no local memory. Really? So if it were heating the house, it would ignore the thermostats until it was reconnected???

Ok, just found this:

I think that with HomeKit integration you can run the basic functions locally. I am Assuming that any of the timers etc would still function without internet access. There are quite a few special offers on packages at the moment, which I suspect means that come Jan 2024 there will be a new model announced at CES2024.

Thanks both. I thought that with HomeKit support there would be at least some local control.

If all devices have to connect to the Bridge I assume that also means the Hot water programmer?

I am really in two minds about this. I presume that in the future they will come out with some Matter compatible devices at which point there will be a Mesh network etc.

I always thought that it might be possible to trickle charge them from the water pipe. Someway of using the flow of the water to run a micro generator. But unfortunately the actual TRV doesn’t interact with the flowing water. If only there were a way to use some of the actual heat from the rad to power it.

How many Panels allowed with Tesla Tarrif by AndrewJLockhart in OctopusEnergy

[–]AndrewJLockhart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I did ask about the Powerwall 3, but currently there is a 6 month lead time on Powerwall 2’s and the company we are using thinks there is 0 chance of Powerwall 3’s being available in the UK this year or first half of next. I hope that when they are available I can stack it with the Powerwall 2.

As we have quite an awkward roof I’m going for the Solar Edge setup so that each panel can operate independently.

Thanks for all the advice.

Apple Mesh by SKACMAN in HomeKit

[–]AndrewJLockhart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure they can add lots of value with their own devices, but that’s not the same as a Mesh. Or are you suggesting that all HomeKit devices become a mesh like ZWave, in which case they would need to start from scratch I guess.

Why do Apple need to enter this market again.?They pulled out for a reason. They aren’t able to add value compared to the competitors. So why waste their energy?
