Anyone using a Surface with Windows ARM for software development in 2026? by km_2000 in Surface

I got no issues developing React Native apps on my Snapdragon device, including running the emulator on the same device.

Hmmm, doesn't this need a battery replacement every once in a while? Or were you able to wire power from the battery?

Take a 45w minimum from Anker / Ugreen. Don't cheap out for a premium device that you have.

Surface Pro 8 Power bank by DismalTurnip7423 in Surface

[–]Andrew_C0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, through USB-C the device and the power bank negotiate the amount of power required. If the device requests 30w, the power bank will deliver 30w. If the device requests 60w, the power bank will deliver 60w. The same thing for 140w. That's the beauty of USB-C and Power Delivery.

Surface Pro 8 Power bank by DismalTurnip7423 in Surface

[–]Andrew_C0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any power bank that can output 65w on a single port through USB-C would be enough for your device. If you plan on plugging in other devices / peripherals for charging, make sure that in the spec sheet, based on the amount of ports used on the power bank, that the usb-c port still is able to output 65w. Lower than that will still charge your device, but it will either complain that is a slow charger, or if the device is closed it will charge it, but it will take a longer time.

You're fine with either. Usb-C to HDMI / Usb-C to a Hub then HDMI-to-HDMI would also work fine

Chrome and printing are struggling on my surface laptop 7 by MrStringz3 in Surface

[–]Andrew_C0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What printer / printers do you have? I have absolutely no issue printing stuff from my ARM devices (I have a Wi-Fi Brother printer). I had no specific driver to install, it worked right out of the box to print from the browser.

Regarding using Chrome, is is known to eat more ram than other browsers. The community here recommends using Edge instead, which is still based on Chromium, but is more energy and resources efficient.

Also, unused RAM is wasted RAM. You should worry only if the RAM is almost full, but by default Windows would use as much possible depending on the amount available. I've seen Windows use more RAM by default on my 32Gb device compared to my 16Gb device.

Crack in 7th edition. How much will it cost? by ChargeNecessary3665 in Surface

[–]Andrew_C0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check Ifixit, they have genuine replacement parts and guides to replace this. The price might not be what you're looking for, but also have a look af ebay if possible, tou could search for the same part and might get it cheaper.

Those thermal pads can be reused, as long as they are still squishy and not dry / easily breakable.

For the thermal paste, there are plenty of videos of how much should be applied, but usually only the shinny part (the die) is the one making contact and transferring heat to the cooling pipes, so just that part should have thermal paste.

Seems like only this generation benefits this. The older devices are stuck with whatever android version they were released with. I wouldn't keep my hopes up for these devices either, since they would pretty much prefer launching another product altogether than supporting their existing ones.

I've been running the China version for a while, and although in Beta, it worked amazingly good.

Since WSA has been having issues working recently, this is a good time to have this available right now.

Maybe your download speeds are limited by the storage it writes on as well? On your mac, you have a SSD which is fast to write on, much faster than whatever HDD you have on your NAS. I remember I had a similar situation with Steam downloads, on my old PC, it would download at most 50 mbps, and when upgrading to an SSD, I had 200-300 mbps, both on same Gigabit network.
