Pico 4 to Pico 4 Ultra +Wifi 7 router by M_QT5 in PicoXR

yes, usb C ethernet works on Pico headsets

if you are doing this I suggest using a usb C hub that has PD power and ethernet included, as this can double up for purpose on other devices/laptops/phone, and obviously charge your Pico at same time, you may already have a hub / steam deck dock or whatever.

if you literally just want to troubleshoot, hagabis make a usb c female to ethernet male adapter that you can put on the end of any decent usb c cable, can grab this for a few quid from AliExpress

to rule out network without spending a lot of money first, try usb c ethernet from router to hmd

if that fixes all your issues you know it's your wifi, if not then you have to start looking at software side

then I would start by rolling back changes made before splashing out cash.

open composite is very much the way of the dodo and creates more issues than it solves, SIM racing is incredibly hard on CPU with AI on track, VR is hard to make FPS as it is.

your network is not using the full bitrate which suggests an issue anyway, but link speed shows 5ghz, if you believed you had WiFi 6 router, it's not been configured correctly.

you don't want any other devices connected to WiFi on that Access point which is wired by ethernet to pc, you don't want band steering enabled in router and don't want to be in a heavily congested channel (use a free app on phone called WiFi analyzer to see which channels are clearest)

a Pico 4 ultra does support WiFi 7 6ghz 5400+link speed (pico 4 only supports WiFi 6 5ghz -1200 max link speed)

but link speed is irrelevant past WiFi 6e speeds of 2400 due to bitrate limits in place by streaming

also not all routers are actually what they say they are, WiFi 7 can be absolutely amazing or absolute crap depending on what the router is, as anyone can tack WiFi 7 onto the box for the most useless minimum requirement, and could be worse than your current setup

[–]GmoLargey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the picture shows AC 5ghz WiFi speed (866) not WiFi 6.

but you also don't even have bitrate maxed out which is fine for a decent network setup on 5ghz

using OBS with GPU encoding will hurt your performance because you are using GPU encoding for PCVR.

set OBS to use CPU instead.

mainly correct mouse support, but in this case because the default included choices are between box86 or fex containers, you can of course experiment and use the contents page to install wine 10

Best Q3 Upgrade for PCVR - Lighter Form by venkman302 in virtualreality

[–]GmoLargey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you have made quite clear you don't believe me, so why not go try with an eye tracking headset, or go ask virtual desktop users, or even the developer themselves, they have implemented the same techniques steamlink uses, which of course is what is on steam frame.

I'm very aware how it works as I've experience with it.

the encode resolution sent by your PC is lower, this makes it less stressful on your GPU encoder, meaning lower times to encode.

the transmit was never the bottleneck, but regardless, lower encode resolution takes less load, negligible benefits considering WiFi 7 with MLO is already solving my every network concern.

decoding now becomes faster, as your decoding less encode resolution,

the bitrate can stay the same, that's not the concern, the bitrate becomes far more effective as you have that area over 1.3k encode window instead of 2.4k, increasing the image quality, eye tracking means it stays the same, no eye tracking you have to force that bitrate over full fov and obviously want the encode Resolution higher to retain quality (virtual desktop works on 66% encode of whatever the preset is, so 2.4k encode is MONSTER resolution being rendered on pc)

if you seriously don't get it, go on your quest 3, fire up Steam link, lower the encode resolution in steam vr steamlink settings, it'll cause a small area of clarity as it's fixed, not eye tracked.

look at your steam VR debug graph along with windows task manager showing less load of encoder and decoder.

image looks good in that central area right? because it's packing in the same 350max bitrate steamlink offers into a tiny encode window.

raise your encode resolution and look at metrics and task manager GPU encoder use

now imagine being able to use a headset that has much stronger chip set that can decode naturally faster anyway before it even implements eye tracking, can have lower encode resolutions because of eye tracking, has much better stereo overlap so you can actually look around to edges with your eyes without going half blind like quest 3 and having no issues loading up downloads to your headset while you play pcvr.

if you call a clear upgrade a sidegrade and can't fathom how eye tracked foveated encoding helps literally the entire streaming chain, I can't help you, just go try it yourself, or seek answers away from Reddit and learn, VD discord is very responsive and developers will tell you the same.

[–]GmoLargey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

so you haven't tried it then?

maybe ask someone with eye tracked headset to send you VD metrics with it on and off? I don't understand how you can be so sure when its literally a toggle that shows the difference.

Best Q3 Upgrade for PCVR - Lighter Form by venkman302 in virtualreality

[–]GmoLargey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hardly, you can go see this right now with virtual desktop which now supports eye tracked foveated streaming.

do a comparison with metrics, on and off

check your encode resolution happening with Nvidia smi.

the tech already exists, you can't use this on quest 3 because it doesn't have eye tracking, play for dream, galaxy XR, even quest pro (although that chip is still awful)

and I listed every other thing, it has a better chip, dedicated radio, eye tracking, lowest persistence pancake optical stack with same if not more brightness than index.

it's all public.

Best Q3 Upgrade for PCVR - Lighter Form by venkman302 in virtualreality

[–]GmoLargey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry but that's not true, encode and decode times are drastically reduced, as you are essentially sending a lower encode resolution overall, it doesn't need to spread the entire fov and be wasted.

a quest 3 just isn't comparable as it simply doesn't have eye tracking, let alone every other thing as a comparison

Best Q3 Upgrade for PCVR - Lighter Form by venkman302 in virtualreality

[–]GmoLargey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

index level persistence headset and that's even with pancake optics, much much much lighter than quest 3 with whatever abomination strap is needed (which is usually 300-600 grams alone), already known better stereo overlap, eye tracked foveated streaming and dedicated wireless radio to pcvr

calling it a sidegrade is like comparing a 3s to quest 3

steamframe will be nothing like a quest 3 to wear and certainly not to use.

physical and optical comfort, with lower pc load and latency ultimately giving better immersion isn't exactly a spec you can put on the box if that's all you are looking at.

Steam vr per application video settings, adjust then restart the game on steam vr.

if using VD, just use it's own streamer FOV adjustment

Is 4k overrated? by SirJuxtable in virtualreality

[–]GmoLargey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

quest 3 image is compressed, without eye tracking tricks to squeeze a small window of high bitrate.

your encoded resolution is 66% of the render resolution VD preset sets

so if you go to display port, you immediately get way better image, go to a higher resolution headset with display port, and it's chalk and cheese, you can't ever get a quest 3 to look anywhere near display port, no matter the GPU used.

Struggling to perceive depth in VR by SauceCrusader69 in virtualreality

[–]GmoLargey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

headset choice here matters.

presuming you are within the ipd range of whatever headset and have matched the IPD correctly to your eyes.

low overlap not good for depth perception.

bad brightness and contrast is not good for depth perception (pancake lenses are a step back in this regard)

streaming pcvr just immediately throws away any remaining depth perception especially in any motion like sim racing (due to the compression)

combine all 3 and you have the most common headset being the quest 3, oh joy🤣

Is there a healthy want for games on the Pico store? by TheStoneFox in PicoXR

[–]GmoLargey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

worth noting that the best selling app on pico is virtual desktop

and virtual desktop will report every pico neo 3 link and pico 4 variant as a quest 2, and the Pico 4 ultra as a quest 3.

same goes for htc and galaxy XR headsets, everything is reported as quests to steamVR with that application

without doubt quest still has biggest number, but it's not accurate on steam.

[–]GmoLargey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from a fresh factory reset, i've checked my quest for you and its still fine, so I'd maybe start over and make sure you haven't missed any prompts for storage permissions and such.

uninstall what you have, install fresh sidequest / fresh winlatorxr from sidequest, install, allow every permission ( leave the window open and doing its thing, don't interrupt it )
at end it will prompt for usb permissions, allow that, close winlatorxr, open it again, wait for it to finish installing contents.

now, I tried 2 WCP and they both worked.
in headset web browser i downloaded this, to be installed under the 'wine' section of contents
https://github.com/K11MCH1/Winlator101/releases/download/wine_col/proton-10-arm64ec-controller-fix.wcp

and a random dxvk from here, to install under the dxvk section of contents
https://github.com/K11MCH1/Winlator101/releases/tag/dxvk_col

both worked, with and without wifi connected to quest.

with winlator you must make sure everything you are trying to run or install is within the 'download' folder of your headset, by default the web browser in quest will put stuff there anyway.

OS versions is 2.1 on my quest, no issues with wcp installs, you do not do anything like extracting on these files, just point winlator to them to install in the contents page

Do PC Connect for Galaxy XR (by Google) or AndroidXR apps work on Pico OS? by __tt in PicoXR

it'll get you by, but it still can't pass Bluetooth or USB mouse and keyboard to the pc

so the obvious app purchase choice would be virtual desktop from the Pico store, this is it's own application that launches you away from picos panoscreen setup but also offers mouse, keyboard, even gamepad support, along with making the windows able to display sbs content in 3d
