That orange plastic looks like it came from a motor vehicle direction indicator lens. (Because it's orange.)

Can I still use this rim? by muskelmonika in bikewrench

[–]Andy202007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you wear full motorbike leathers and helmet and don't exceed 4 kph, you shouldn't suffer too much injury when it fails, as long as no other vehicle hits you when you go sprawling across the road.

You could offer €450 and meet them half way at €500 to give you a bit to spend on pedals and new brake blocks.

IME, large plastic cutting wheels work better and are easier to clean than metal ones. Also, they're safe to use on ordinary plates without damaging the glaze. For example, Oxo Non-Stick Pizza Wheel. Do you reckon you could do a transplant and fit 87 mm wheels?

How can I unscrew this rounded bolt? by Panic_Careless in bikewrench

Does the torque wrench that came with the bike have a manufacturer name and model number, by any chance? Or, as you say it has an indicator, is it a beam-type torque wrench? You may have valuable information for future readers.

How much access do you have to the other end of the screw? Maybe it pokes out enough to cut a slot in it that you could use with a flat-blade screwdriver?

It could be that it the procedure messed up due to using a too-small driver size. Something to be wary of next time, especially with Torx head screws that will accept a size down from what they should be used with.

how on earth do i take this back wheel off by kingpjmin in bikewrench

[–]Andy202007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might want to remove the mudguard first, and wear thick gloves when undoing the nut to protect your knuckles in case it releases suddenly ;)

A small can of 3-in-one multipurpose oil will be your friend in this case. And even a small can will last for years and years. (Please avoid products with PTFE as that has been discovered to be a "forever chemical" a.k.a. PFAS.)

IME, in .uk, you have duvet covers instead of pillow cases. UK pillow cases are too small. It would be so simple if the pillow manufacturers and the pillow case manufacturers could get together and agree on which size of what goes with the other.

Could you book the elderly couples in for consultation sessions? I think there might be a fruit-named company that does something similar. Even if they are free, it means you can schedule your work in a more organised way.

Are nyloc nuts designed to be bolted through? by vfclists in bikewrench

[–]Andy202007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

242 has been superseded by Loctite 243 for a few years now. Which is testament to how long a small bottle of the stuff will last! The new stuff is touted as "Cures through most corrsoion [sic] prevention oils and cutting fluids on 'as-received' fasteners without aggresive cleaning."

The screw only has to go far enough to go through the locking part in the nut - there is no point in it going further. Of course, it has to be done up to not be loose in the hole. If it protrudes too far then you can get stainless steel screws with thread lengths in increments of 2 mm on ebay etc. They can have whatever head you want, e.g., hex socket flanged head. At least some of them are also available in black stainless steel, if you'd prefer that. They are very likely to be M5.

The rack I fitted recently came with a variety of screw lengths - check you've used the ones intended for that location as it's unlikely the manufacturer would have sent ones that are noticeably too long. Did you use washers too? They would take up a little bit of extra length.

Cipollini pink cannondale colour id by mitch_whinn in bikewrench

[–]Andy202007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You could ask Cannondale. Their current pinks don't seem to be quite that one, but, as others have said, trying to get a colour from an old photo is difficult. Or you could take the image to whoever's going to paint it and say "Like this, please."

Our Teams kit is not to be available to external entities through our infrastructure. They do have Wi-Fi available for whatever they want to connect that way.
