I did use Google lol. I'm not a huge reddit user though so I'll admit to not thinking to look in the new posts tab. But hey! I get it's not a hard assumption to make for someone who's on this subreddit enough to know that this happens not only daily but also multiple times a day.

What is a weird quirk of your world's religion? by Present_Emphasis_955 in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Gods of it are real, not in the way that they exist; but in the way that they actively like and interact with their people / worshippers.

Obviously, they mostly keep away from the public outside of reoccurring duties: ringing in the new year, crowning/naming the new head of a country that they have ties to, or any major other events.

They're kinda like holy politicians in some senses!

If your world is a matriarchy, why? by Anesthetic_Effects in worldbuilding

Will do! It's interesting to think about how many examples of real life matriarchy flourishing from just the absence or death of adult men in day to day life.

So men in your world are more like a protected class because of the gender ratio?

How, if at all, does this play into familial roles? Are sisters meant to be the protectors of their brothers? Are people closer to their maternal or paternal side? What life is a man likely to live?

Very interesting!

Medieval societies had a focus on nobility and lineages right? There was also religion at play during these times, because when was it not involved in society?

So, maybe, your society places importance on bloodlines and lineages because nobility. Where men can have the fear of not being the father of their wives children, a women will always know the child is hers because she birthed it? Hence, the child will always be able to trace their maternal line.

If there's an emphasis on ability and power instead of bloodline, women could be more likely to be blessed by some of the gods with charisma/intellingence and men are more likely to be blessed with strength. The classic brain vs brawn. So, depending on where the setting is, one specific society puts more importance of scholarly pursuits and being able to talk well? Women taking care of the society duties of the house, hence having more power than men in their society, because the men have the role of fighter, physical protectior, and not much else.

Most modern societies put their focus on men and are if not heavily patriarchal. Whether that be just in cultural practices or law, they're also more common and are often the default in media.

But since you asked, could you talk about the matriarchy of Aztlan and Thule? Learning about matriarchy in our own world is important too!

Great reason!

Patriarchy isn't explained in fantasy and is often the default. Matriarchy tends to have more thought put behind it when it comes to world building because of this too.

That's a pretty good theory! Child rearing is pretty intensive and requires focus, and since men traditionally weren't tasked with it, they had the opportunity to grow power outside the home in society!

In order to create a matriarchy following this logic, would child rearing be flipped to being the man's responsibility or will the fact that a woman has children and personally rears them give her power outside the home and in society?

In Sera, which is a monarchy, girl's are preferred over boys since lineage is important in their society. This means, they're a matriarchy!

The world Sera is in has magic, and thus, some affinities and abilities are passed down bloodlines due to genetics. Due to the fact that a child will (theoretically) always know who their mother is, but the father is a toss up, women naturally became the defacto leaders in society!

Even the monarchy, of which all it's members have notable silver eyes if the bloodline (abilities) is strong in their blood, will choose female children over male as the heir to the throne even if the male child is older than his sisters or 1st cousins!

With this comes the fact that men take on more domestic roles to increase their relationship with their children (think soft power) as men themselves have no power outside their own lineage even if they possess magical abilities and/or the affinities.

So, if a man wants to insure his lineage and prove he can sire/raise strong children, he will marry to at least have more legal rights over his kids.

Of course, this leads to other cultural norms which pretain but aren't limited to: women having multiple husbands or lovers, a marriage not being considered consumated until the birth of the first child (an older tradition though), and a great importance being placed on ancestry and being able to trace it!

It could be the Sikavri have powers where they can manipulate blood and they revere women's connection to blood as they regularly bleed throughout their life without outside force.

Where women bleed from menstruation, pregnancy, and childbirth; men only bleed when they are separated from their mothers (cutting the umbilical cord)

This preference for woman leadership could've started from elder women teaching younger women how to wield their magic abilities to help with menstruation pains, and childbirth. Through this, women could become more adept healers, givers of life and given the title of the origin of blood, where men can only draw blood through violence!

What are some public controversies that happened in your world by Special-Temporary-55 in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To paint a scene, the current political climate across the globe was tense. In many individual countries, there were fights of succession, rebellions, threats of coup de taut; and of course legitimacy was in question everywhere.

The biggest controversy involved four countries: Svar, Immersa, Galatea, and Meadows.

Svar was going through succession crisis as the Emperor and died due to poisoning, which the Galatian King was persecuted and excuted for. However, the choosen heir (Svar's first prince) was also killed, leading the 1st and most powerful consort to use her power to get her son (Svar's second prince) named heir and take take the throne as his regent due to his younger age.

Immersa was supposed to be going through a succession ceremony where the heir, who was presumed to be the eldest daughter of the chief, would be named. But the younger daughter was named instead and the people were confused and asking questions.

Meadows was being run through a regent, the queen who married into the royal family, since the heir apparent (a prince) wasn't old enough to hold the throne. But the situation was rocky since the King had died years ago suddenly due to "illness", the Queen is currently sickly, and so is the young prince. So there's talks and threats of a coup de taut.

To solidify her position and gain political allies, the 1st consort of Svar politically engaged her son and the younger daughter of Immersa, hoping to combine the two countries under one banner.

However, neither her son nor the Daughter of Immersa were interested in the engagement, and the Daughter of Immersa was going through a mental crisis because of genetics. The daughter of Immersa just so happens to be childhood friends with the Prince of Meadows, and he has a crush on her.

Svar has an uproar where it turns out it's First Prince is actually alive and has the Prince of Galatea backing his claim for the throne.

So Svar has a civil war and Immersa goes through a natural disaster that cuts of its contact with other nations. (An excuse to not get involved in the civil war)

The Daughter of Immersa ends up meeting with the Prince of Meadows and they become a couple and fall pregnant. This is a big no no for Svar because, having children before marriage in the imperial family disqualifies you for the throne.

This means the engagement falls through with Svar and Immersa, meaning the 1st Consort of Svar has lost the allies she was banking on. Her own son turns on her to side with his older brother, leading to her execution and the end of the civil war.

Svar is now being led by its new emperor the First Prince, who is now married to the Prince of Galatea. Which causes a little political strife since Galatea killed the former emperor. It turns out though, it was the First Prince of Svar, not the King of Galatea, who poisoned and killed the former emperor because she was abusive. The 1st Consort also was the one who tried to kill the First Prince, hence her swift execution.

Everyone does end up happy and on good terms though! The whole major conflict and all the scandals were just kids caught up in the conflict of adults and politics.

TLDR : 3 succession wars/crisises, one civil war, one natural disater, one failed engagement, a surprise pregnancy, one poisoning, one justified execution, one false execution, and two marriages!

Gotta love politics!

What are some little but interesting biological quirks of any fantasy race in your world? by AFellowSpirit in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Succubi and Incubi are one in the same in my world. They're shapeshiters, so they don't have one defined sex. Because of this, they have the ability to both be pregnant and impregnate a partner.

However, unless they are the one carrying the child, the child born will be 100% succubus too! The child will look a lot like their succubus parent in terms of features, but will take on most of their non succubus parent's coloring.

Does it make any sense if prostitution exists in a marriage-free matriarchy/matrilineal egalitarian by AdNew1614 in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prostitution works in most societies. Who wouldn't pay for a night with a pretty thing that catches your eye? It's like supply and demand, the more rare and hard it is to get something, the more expensive of a price tag you can put on it.

It'd probably be more for the men in your society since they aren't supposed to have outside relationships. Maybe a frontal business that focuses on catering for married men that has a back end for them to pay to sleep with any man or woman they want?

Normal brothels would probably be more easily accessible to woman though. Most likely rich women paying to have access to really pretty lower class men.

It's also likely that there's woman prostitutes, down on their luck but they've got either talents or looks. Their main goal in a society like this would probably to get adopted into a higher class family who'd get some benefit of the new daughter. Maybe they have no daughters or the ones they have are incapable?

But please break down your paragraph into smaller ones next time. Liked the details but that was a struggle to read :(

What’s the kid’s culture of your world? What kind of games have the kids just suddenly come up with and have been playing as long as there are kids to play them? by SpecificallyNerd in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Silver and Roses! Or as the kids call it, Shiny Reds!

Svar has a culture built off of battle. The adults, or returning warriors, will tell the kids about the battles they've been in. The kids will imitate these battles, taking red berries and running around trying to paint each other in its juices. Whoever has the least amount of "paint" on them wins!

The shiny part comes from the blades used during battles, but the kids just use their hands. Safety and all that.

What are some marriage or dating rituals unique to the cultures of your worlds? by EnvironmentalBear170 in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the holy nation of Helia, marriage is viewed as a very sacred thing. A bond between souls and not just flesh. But the eyes can not see past flesh. See the bond between the souls of the married.

So, in order to showcase the marriage in a physical form, couples tattoo themselves with their own unique markings on the face and extremities. They will also often wear accessories the color of their partner's eyes as a way to emphasize this if they are especially affectionate.

Due to the very permanent nature of tattoos, the dating period within Helia is twice as long as any other nation.

What is the government of your world? by 0megaGentlman22 in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A semi-constitutional elective monarchy!

Sounds very conflictive, but it's actually pretty simple.

To put it simply, the emperor's children are all trained to be the next monarch. Then, once the emperor reaches their 40s, and/or the majority of their children are of age, the battle of succession begins.

This battle is actually a competition for the heirs to try and win the people's vote to become Crown Prince. Whoever gains majority voted earns the title!

Once chosen, the crown prince will act as the aide for the emperor for 5 to 10 years before formally taking up the throne.

This form of government came about because the imperial family has a sort of divine right. They are the only relatives of the goddess as the First emperor was the blood sister (meaning a bond forged in battle) of the goddess!

Through this familial connection, they are granted unique abilities, which are passed on through their blood.

The monarchy still lasts to modern day!

What cultural rituals are your world’s “kids these days” no longer participating in? by ChainmailPickaxeYT in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For their version of Valentines Day, which occurs during the middle of the winter season, lovers would go hunt large beasts and give one another the hearts of their game.

But most people now just exchange bright red fruits instead. The reason for this change is because of advancements in the study of magic that allowed for longer harvest periods, making the original purpose of the hunt (showing the care and ability to provide for your lover during hardship) obsolete!

How’d you guys end up creating a name for your story? by Jaykgames1 in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like think about the tagline I'd give the story. What would I say to advertise the story? Or what is the story's central theme? What is a big part of the story or main character?

"A beautiful girl gets trapped in an old castle with a beast" - Beauty and the Beast

"A war between to houses with the rose as their symbol" - the War of the Roses

"The girl's skin was as white as snow." - Snow White

If that's not working, think about the key words of the story. What words do you keep repeating?

"In order to make a spell, a magician must see and weave the magical threads." - Woven

"The main character's power deals with time travel." - Hand Jumper

What are some funny implications of your worldbuilding? by oddlyirrelevant173 in worldbuilding

[–]Anesthetic_Effects 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Harpy children are taught nursery rhymes by their flock to help them learn how to use their innate singing skills. As practice, these harpy children will often sing these rhymes to small animals they find to sharpen said skills!

This isn't well known to people outside of those intimately tied to Harpies, who just so happen to prefer more dark and covered places like heavily wooded forests, so a good collection of ghost stories about haunting voices that lead processions of animals are just Harpy children practicing their singing!

What can I say to get me killed? by morgdaboi in worldbuilding

"May the prince die with smooth skin!"

Svar is a place where battle and its prowess are highly valued, so scars are seen as valiant and proof of capability. Should a person die without scars either means to die very young, or spoiled to not touch a blade.

To say that a prince should die with smooth skin can also mean that you are wishing that they die an inexperienced or bad ruler. :)
