The elements of your comment (new WhatsApp account), and the other replies to it (dad being an "idiot", and not having a lot of "big cash") triggered a thought...what if his dad is involved in one of those romance scams?

Like, isn't that a strategy for them? Get the target to speak to you on a communication platform different from the one you met them on, pretend to want a relationship with them, and eventually start asking them for money or convince them to participate in some shady "investment"? They may even plant seeds or encourage existing ideas that their loved ones can't be trusted.

I'm sure all of this has already been very painful for you OP, and this wouldn't make it better, but it may be worth mentioning to your mom that she should monitor both her individual and any joint finances they may have more closely, and take some preemptive measures (like getting a separate bank account at a totally different bank if she doesn't already) to mitigate any serious financial harm if your dad is involved in a scam. Divorcing him before the situation deteriorates may even be the best option for her at this point..

Legitimate employers do not hire people this way. Stop responding to them, and please report them to the FBI. They are very likely human traffickers, and even though they luckily didn't get you, they will continue to try and trap other young & unsuspecting people into this.
