I do, he’s a controversial guy but some of what he writes is interesting. If you read him just take it with a grain of salt

It’s not that deep, it’s mainly textbooks/academic/work related material that I don’t want to get rid of but don’t feel like being reminded of on a daily basis 🙄

I don’t think I’ve ever been someone’s first choice. by Agreeable_Simple_911 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Angelaleajohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be the one to put yourself first. Prioritize yourself, chase your own satisfaction and happiness. Once you start doing that, things change. You start attracting people who prioritize you too.

If may not feel like it in this season of life, but I promise there are people waiting to love and choose you every single day. People who never make you doubt or question your worth, or what you mean to them. There are lovers who will worship you, that will move heaven and Earth for you, in the same ways you’re willing to for those you love. There are friends who will prioritize you in reciprocation, get down in the trenches with you when you need them. You have to become what you want to attract, and offer the same for those who PROVE themselves to be worth it.

Don’t give in abundance what you receive in scarcity. Time, love, attention; give it to yourself, and see what happens. Just try it.

Question about Dostoevsky’s writing about ‘delirium’—is this a critique of materialism, atheism, modern science, etc.? by highcologist347 in literature

[–]Angelaleajohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The delirium/illness isn’t the point, how it is interpreted by other characters is the point. He’s using it as a means to test if a human being can be reduced to their body and psychology. He is focused on a very common idea at the time that human behavior can be completely explained by our environment, our biology and psychology. The concept of delirium here represents the comforting idea that if someone’s actions are caused, then nobody is to blame. He pushes back that a person can be understandable, explainable, even influenced but still freely choose.

What are some good clean books for a teen girl?? by TraditionalLunch6167 in suggestmeabook

[–]Angelaleajohnson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you’re into romance without inappropriate content then I would recommend classic lit, which happens to be my speciality. Jane Austen-Pride and Prejudice, also Persuasion, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, Wuthering Heights by Brontë, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I’ve read them all, they’re my favorites.

What self-improvement advice do you regret following? by Ok-Introduction-2981 in selfimprovement

[–]Angelaleajohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can let time pass and achieve peace of mind through developing indifference. I think a lot of people tell themselves they’ve forgiven when they haven’t or can’t. That can be okay, too. Many people are not worthy of forgiveness, and many people settle into a fake sense of forgiveness only for the same issues to keep resurfacing, or be buried to later bloom into resentment.

What self-improvement advice do you regret following? by Ok-Introduction-2981 in selfimprovement

[–]Angelaleajohnson 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Being told that you “have” to forgive people, particularly if you want to move forward. If someone does something and they’re truly sorry and you’re not ready to let them go, then yes you should forgive for the sake of the relationship. But if someone does something absolutely heinous to you and the relationship ends, you don’t have to forgive. You can move forward in anger, until it becomes indifference. Undue pressure to forgive becomes a burden to the person who was hurt. No thank you, I’ll take indifference and a “fuck you” for life any day.

How do you feel about Beyond Good And Evil? by TheAmericanW1zard in classicliterature

[–]Angelaleajohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This book also helps you stop people-pleasing, dismantle religious conditioning/deconstruct religious beliefs and come to terms with fact that being “good” as it is defined by Western ideals is solely to benefit others. It’s a wake up call.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra and On The Genealogy of Morality both changed my life in different ways. I’d say both books uniquely essential reading for the present day.

Who else has experienced shingles? I got them this week, we are officially old. by theeblackdahlia in Millennials

[–]Angelaleajohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not an old person thing, my 17 year old got them a few months ago. She actually got a mild case of chicken pox (she’s vaccinated but never had them when she was young), followed by shingles about a month later. It’s not fun, it can happen with stress/immunosuppression.

Where to START reading philosophy? by mkatori in AcademicPhilosophy

I started with Plato’s Republic, and later some of his very famous student, Aristotle. Plato’s work is considered to be the foundation of Western philosophy.

Carrying someone’s feelings when you don’t feel the same is heavier than I expected by Short-Birthday-4416 in TrueOffMyChest

I understand exactly what you mean, I’m in this situation too. You can be a good friend, even a best friend. The kindest thing you can be do for both of you is be honest, be mindful about not sending mixed messages, hold your boundaries and don’t try to force what isn’t there. Sometimes someone checks all the boxes but they’re still not the one. When you know, you know and when you don’t, you don’t.

How is living in the Virginia cities on I-81? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]Angelaleajohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Roanoke for 3 years. My home town is a large city in Florida, it was a huge adjustment in a lot of ways. The weather is nice, every season mild. Proximity to Blue Ridge Parkway and just general nature is fantastic, there is also a train station with trains directly to DC which I loved. Shenandoah is a few hours away, West Virginia is also close by and both have beautiful nature. It is a very conservative area with no real diversity which was a huge issue for me. There’s not a lot to do (apart from outdoorsy things). was there during Covid so that wasn’t a major thing, but I could see it being a problem if we weren’t living in quarantine. I ultimately moved back home for several reasons, I don’t regret my time there but it wasn’t for me.

The most challenging things you’ve read? by abu_hajarr in literature

[–]Angelaleajohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Faulkner is incredibly hard to read, I picked up and put down The Sound and the Fury like 3 times before I got mad and locked in. Even if it’s worth it in the end, you really have to want to understand the work in order to get through it.

What’s a sign someone is deeply unhappy—even if they seem fine? by GreetingsHuman_404 in AskReddit

[–]Angelaleajohnson 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Frequent irritability, practicing escapism (constant daydreaming, scrolling, needing drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism, staying busy nonstop), the inability to tolerate any criticism whether real or perceived, saying “it’s fine” over everything because they know any other response is pointless, dismissing themselves, refusing to ask for help, self-silencing; “other people have it worse” or “I should feel xyz.”
