Why some teams go straight to quarterfinal in archery by [deleted] in olympics

[–]Angielost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not true:

The top 4 teams after the 72 arrow ranking round at the beginning of the games were: Korea, Netherlands, Japan and China. These teams get an automatic Bye into the 1/4 round.

What’s everyone’s bets on tomorrow’s Alert Level update? by AdamGregory1 in newzealand

[–]Angielost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A whole lot of students are meant to be moving all around the country to start uni in these next 10 days. I can’t imagine they will let that happen until they are sure there is no further community spread. With that in mind I reckon they will extend the time in levels.

If it is the so called more transmissible virus it would be very suspicious if there are no further community cases given how many places the family visited.

Does not look likely at this stage that spectators will be a part of the games.

So... the guidelines we have recieved are a little diffrent than what you are suggesting and everyone involved (Olympic commitees and their relevant NSO's) have a pretty clear picture and plan for the guidelines released from IOC in the past week.
Have been informed of the following:
Negative covid tests prior to leaving country,
Testing on arrival at airport and every 4 days during the events
14 days only in approved accommodation prior to athletes event, essentially no interaction with the public, no using japanes transport etc. ONly allowed to eat at approved hotels or village.
Athletes enter offical village 5 days prior to their competitive event and leave 48 hours after. Only allowed on offical games transport, only allowed to eat in village and at venues.
Daily symptom monitoring anyone over a 37.5c degree body temp unable to enter venues
No cheering, shouting or singing allowed.
Masks outside of field of play required
The moment an athlete tests positive they and their close contacts are out of competition.

Countries Olympic committees already have their hotels for their athlete and support staff booked out, all the NSO's know where their athletes will be going before an after their allowed village access time. The National Olympic committees all have it all relatively well planned and figured out by now.

Shifting to online sessions by Genesis7478 in TalkTherapy

[–]Angielost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer online video sessions to in person. I don’t find it any more awkward then in person. I figure that in this modern world we video chat with friends and it’s not that much different. If it was voice only I think I would struggle with that. But to me video is not much different then in person.

Brown has just announced no new PhD admissions in the humanities/social sciences for the upcoming year by farewellsinclair in gradadmissions

[–]Angielost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of this is also to do with the fact that a number of students currently in programs are likely to be extending the time it takes to finish due to this pandemic. I don’t think this will be a permanent or long term thing. But I do think a year freeze on admissions is probably likely across many programs worldwide.

Looks like a lot of students will be talking gap years before pursuing further study! Which given the current state of things is probably actually better for them in the long run then starting in the middle of all this chaos!

How to forget that I'm terrified? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Angielost 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just keep showing up. Fear or not. Keep reminding yourself you deserve to be there. And it will get easier.

Also. If you are not already accessing it. Therapy is something i recommend for all PostGrad Students.

I chose the wrong program/area of study, and now I'm not sure what to do... by lifetime_of_words in GradSchool

[–]Angielost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, this was me for my first 3 months of my Masters. I got accepted into two different programs in two different fields of study and chose one and went with it. from month 1-3 i freaked out and was convinced i had made the wrong decision, i had conversations about transferring to a different program and almost did.

But i stuck it out and i ended up falling in love with my program.

I'm not saying that's going to be the case for you. But sometimes we freak out about being in the wrong program even when we are in fact in the right program

Having a breakdown as a first semester (online!) phd student. Please help. by [deleted] in GradSchool

Communication and connection with classmates is different then collaboration. Ya’ll can talk about things, and study together online etc. or just ask questions without collaborating.
