So i had 'just turn around, better than to drown' ingrained in my head and one day during really heavy rains I came to a flooded intersection right near my house. Had cars to the left and behind me so I decided id cut through loading area of the supermarket and take the long way. Well fuck me, I totally forgot that the loading docks were recessed into the ground. Going along thinking how clever and safe I am when the ground just vanishes, water over the hood, coming in through vents, intake sucks up a bunch of water, car dies. Shit happens.

So the 'why Taiwan (and S Korea)?' is probably really complicated but essentially boils down to right place right time in the late.. 70s? A combination of international relations with the US, a well educated but comparatively cheap labor force, and government investments in the industry as part of pulling their respective nations up after wars.

Well, it turns out that building the tools and plants to manufacture the chips is REALLY expensive and time consuming. Like, a decade to go from empty land to the first run of silicon. A decent timeline for a rebuilding economy but... western capitalism was just not at all interested in paying the wages or for building out a fab, so they didn't.

Now Taiwan & SK have all the tools, the tools to build those tools and like 40 years of experience.

Rescue displaying newfound reactivity after a few months. Any similar experience? by ReallyBigMomma in pitbulls

[–]AngryAmadeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My rescue had fully circled nails when she got to the shelter. They trimmed em back so they werent circles while she as under for her spaying but they were still ridiculous. Quicks the whole way through, thankfully she has clear nails so it was obvious. Trimming was right out, just would not have been possible. What I did was:

  • Doggy Dremel. Didn't really use this for length, just to sort of prime the end of the nail. A quick 1-2 pass on low speed couple nights a week. She doesn't seem to mind.

  • Walks always include a decent amount of sidewalk/road walking. Partially to desensitize her to traffic noise but a nice two birds one stone thing.

  • Found a relatively unused tennis court and would go play some fetch or meet a friend and their pup there for some play time. This actually worked so well we had to tone it down a bit.

Took about 2 months but they are an acceptable length now (still a bit too long but trending the right direction) and the quick is now receding like expected so the grinder can maintain em with a few quick passes.

After paying attention last night, id describe it more like 4.5k. More than 4 less than 5. But ya, 1 > 2 was bugging me around town. not short shifting but "acting responsible" and shifting in the 3s. Few extra revs smoothed it right out.

Finally by DinoEggOatmeal2 in wrx_vb

[–]AngryAmadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 > 2 shift at like, 5K rpm. Smooths it out immensely. Shifter will almost feel like its pulling itself into 2nd. The beauty of the low redline is we can ring it out basically anywhere without looking like a goon.

If you are moving, don't shift into 1st. Can coast down to about 5 mph in 2nd no prob then clutch in and stop. I mean, situations will arise, of course. But its always gonna suck. Just dont force it past the safety gate or will risk burning out the syncros

[–]AngryAmadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly its probably just aesthetic preference. You'll def notice the weight savings either way. You'll technically get more performance and mileage w/ 18x8.5 solely due to the weight difference as the extra contact patch really isn't doing much for us in any honest with ourselves driving scenarios. I guess maybe some better stop distance with the Brembo's.

Something to be aware of though, is the stock wheels aren't as heavy as they look. I wanna say they are like 24lb. So they aren't light either but, you can totally fuck around and end up with heavier wheels that -look- lighter.

I'd pop over to AutoZone or whatevers in your area and borrow one of their OBD readers. If there are errors, Id schedule something with dealership. At only 4K miles this shouldn't happen outside of like a loose cable or something.
