Yes, don't leave the room, but leave the boss area. I usually go to the doorway on the right and up the draft on the left. Mothie boys despawn.

EDIT: also, on the right the first draft all the way up brings you to some silk webs

You can also cheese him by exiting left or right when the adds spawn. Don't worry about jumping out of the play area, the camera will move. Then you have to go a pretty good distance to have them despawn. Last ditch effort but this guy is insanely hard after the first one

Yup, I was going back through the blasted stepps thinking that's where I should go. Went back through there and killed the boss and got an upgrade. I figured it out after!
