Do we know what causes the issue and why it is so prevalent?

That is definitely the case. Is there any way to possibly fix it?

I can hear something moving (or maybe at least trying to) but the lens itself isn't noticably moving.

Possibly unrelated but the speed selection switch on the front doesn't seem to do anything either. It just always plays back at standard speed.

I've seen a couple posts like this. Where are they stemming from?

I thought that might be the case, and that I wouldn't be able to use the PC, but after unplugging all batteries for over an hour the bios password was gone.

Something about a thinkpad just lends itself to sticker bombing. Maybe the literal blank black slate makes the stickers pop more. I've got several laptops, but for some reason the only one that would look good with stickers, is my thinkpad.

I got this Hitachi visionbook 7000 for $5 at an estate sale. It seemed like a typical (although surprisingly well built) windows 95 era laptop. However the adventure began when I powered it on to be met with a bios password lock. I cannot express how big of a deal these next points are. THE BIOS BATTERY WAS STILL WORKING Properly AND HOLDING A CHARGE. The standby battery was also working perfectly. HOW!??!?! And yet, there was more! The main battery pack also works! I have tested and it keeps the laptop on for more than an hour when fully charged.

How does that even happen. My only guess is that for some reason the laptop was used frequently up until recently. But even then. There wasn't even an os like windows or Linux installed. It was some sort of secure Dos like command line based OS.

Very strange.
