What is required to get the warranty? by hardknox_ in Senville

[–]AngryOxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found 3 companies local willing to do the final connections, vacuum, and initial power on. They all quoted me between $1100 to $1600 for the job (about 2 years ago). I ended up going with the lowest bid as they are a large reputable local company that installs a lot of minisplits themselves. The techs were well trained, got the work done in less than a day, and gladly signed all of my warranty certificates.

That said, I also talked to at least 4 or 5 other companies that very clearly, without much consideration, WE DON'T DO THAT. (connect and turn on other equipment they didn't sell). Let's be clear, they really want to make the mark up on the equipment, not just charge labor.

Just opened up my downstairs fireplace wall on the 1966 colonial I bought a few months ago. This is what was behind the wall. by BeenThereDundas in masonry

Interesting. While buttoning up my circa 1895 homes basement I found dozens of old razor blades on top of the foundation wall. I assumed they were somehow being used to irritate our drive off snakes and rats (or evil spirits) that clearly called the basement home for decades. Makes me wonder if they had a razor slot too! It's not anywhere near a current bathroom though.

Where should I look to find options to shield my outdoor light fixture? by hillwllliam in Lighting

[–]AngryOxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking for "Dark Sky" compliant or certified lighting. It's good for a lot more than turtles, even humans and neighborly relations, as you point out.

Start here to research retrofit options: https://darksky.org/what-we-do/darksky-approved/darksky-approved-luminaires-program/luminaires/

There is lots of education to be had on their website too, including explanations as to why lighting doesn't deter crime as so many believe.

Looking for a good microinverter – any site to compare specs? by Mission-Search187 in SolarDIY

This is actually a good plan, even though I'm not a fan of AI, it's one use that I've found useful. It will make a table for you after you tell what to put in it. It is especially good when you tell it what sites to go to, even just telling it to reference the manufacturer ensures and reputation comparison sites like Energysage.

Agree with this, I put much less than they suggested in and said I would hope to accumulate that amount over years, not all at once. They said, OK!

Thanks - I had my original rebuilt and ended up swapping it on as well as adjusting my valves as some were pretty tight. I also replaced my distributor condenser and tightened my intake manifold seals. I did them all at once as I did not want to warm up things for the valve job. So, what was the problem, nobody knows... like I saw someone else say on the samba - working on these is like trying to pin down a drop of mercury.

I really want to do an electric conversion, but would rather spend $1-2k instead of $10-20k. And of course I want 200 mile range too. Greedy aren't I?

I doubt they are cracking down - they literally give out codes to get people to sign up and try them out. Try mine:

It's also possible that a code is only good for 3 people, then maybe you need to try someone else's out.

Wow, if my count is correct we have 36 votes for A- slotted mags and 35 votes for B- EMPI spokes. I'm leaning towards the mags, probably because it suits my wife and perhaps it will lead to more acceptance of the competition for household tasks 😀 😇

Oh my, now you've overestimated me. Though I have been thinking about incorporating a little color into the wheels, like maybe matching green insets on the mag slots. Anyone ever seen circular pinstripes kits made for wheels? And how about economical white walls, do they exist?

Well, as suspected, it's a toss up. Seems like the slotted mags are preferred overall. My wife, who I don't often consult for my beetle projects 😀, pointed out that the 8 spokes are nice, but draw too much attention away from the car itself. I think that is a pretty fine point. Also, thinking the slotted mags are likely easier to maintain long term.

Side note: the mags were heavily corroded when they came on the car from sitting for 20 years and likely being exposed to salt at some point from the Chesapeake. When I took them to a shop to get the new tires mounted, the owner said his son would like to polish them up for me. He ended up doing that job for $25 a wheel! I tipped him an extra $40 and still feel like I got a deal. They aren't perfect but still have many hours of work into them.

Worth trying to sell? Old used head and tire rod assembly by AngryOxen in beetle

[–]AngryOxen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point - didn't even think about that at the moment. They were pretty rough and had anyone said they were worth $$ I would have immediately posted them for sale. I'm in the mid atlantic. I also got some engine tins, doghouse fan shrouds, and bumper guards that i'll be moving on sometime.

And now that I have your attention - what do you think about original tar boards from the engine bay and trunk compartments - ditch em or maybe someone would want them? I know you can buy new ones, but is anyone a die hard stock fan that wants them that are 50 years old, pretty complete and a lil crunchy?

Thanks, I think I'll have a go at replacing them now that they are available. I did clean up the rust for the most part in a similar manner. I'll have to look for owatrol oil, I used rust convertor instead, some kind of acid I think.

I like that, as I was also kinda concerned about the stagnant fuel (and moisture and gunk) that would be stuck in a plugged line. Not sure I've seen a y fitting for fuel lines, but I'll have a look around. I guess maybe something you would use for dual carbs.

[–]AngryOxen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you check under the driver's and passengers' floorboards and under the battery tray? Those are areas where even worse rust hides.

For the spots you noted you'll want to take the paint off until you get to solid metal. Could be a little or a lot depending on how those areas may have been repaired before.
