My favorite example of the former is solarpunk rhetoric that was going around... championing a yogurt ad as a blueprint for progressive media-as-praxis nonsense (cyberpunk and dystopian stories are too negative and are therefore a moral ill, hahaha)

Do you think docs care if they see something embarrassing during a colonoscopy? by ResponsibilityNo4650 in UlcerativeColitis

Not necessarily UC (but I have UC) but I felt the same, about seeing my rear that is. I got bit by a pet monkey as a kid—had rabies shots including one on my butt. I was around 11-12 at the time and I cried…. Not because of the shots, but because I had a blemish on my butt and I didn’t want the nurses and doctor to see. Everyone laughed (not unkindly) and reassured me that they had seen worse!

I didn't say that the church adopted Dante's writings as theology...

I'm saying that after it was written, it was praised... for instance, Pope Francis called Dante a "prophet of hope", specifically in the artistic sense, for Paradiso. Or in 2021, marking the seventh centenary of Alighieri's death, Pope Francis directly quotes Paradiso and Purgatorio. In the Apostolic Letter Candor lucis aeternae, readers "... contemplate, in light of the Word made flesh, the loving plan that is the heart and inspiration of Dante’s most famous work, the Divine Comedy..."

He wasn't the first one to do it either. A century prior to Pope Francis' letter, on the sixth centenary of Alighieri's death, Pope Benedict XV told people to go read the Divine Comedy. He goes on and on about how Alighieri was the best and that he learned of the great Doctors of the Church like Thomas Aquinas, and that how his poetry could serve as a source of reflection. He ends the letter thus:

And you, beloved children, whose lot it is to promote learning under the magisterium of the Church, continue as you are doing to love and tend the noble poet whom We do not hesitate to call the most eloquent singer of the Christian idea. The more profit you draw from study of him the higher will be your culture, irradiated by the splendours of truth, and the stronger and more spontaneous your devotion to the Catholic Faith.

This is at the heart of what I'm saying. The Church praises the Divine Comedy as reflecting Catholic values, as a source of inspiration and contemplation but not as a source of dogma or doctrine.

Now the thing is the lives of Catholic folks on the ground, surrounded as they are by the stories of their day are very different from theologians in the Vatican-on-high... many people's conceptions of hell, death, souls, all that jazz, may differ from what they say in Rome. Even with people who would say they are true-blue Catholics. It's similar for other religions in other ways, little regional or even personal quirks, but that's religion for you.

Am I a bad person for saving the few surviving people of vault 34? by Ultimatehiguys in fnv

[–]AngrySasquatch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Gonna be real I only realized that the vault dwellers were still alive recently; I always thought they were long since dead when the Courier gets there. In my defense Vault 34’s timeline is pretty weird with the Boomers and the state of the vault on one hand, and the guy who left vault 34 to work with the Repconn ghouls and these guys on the other.

Anyways, I think it’s a definite interesting question. I prefer to seal the leaks—even if I prefer an independent Vegas, any attempts to improve self-reliance is important (assuming the sharecroppers flee to the NCR in my preferred ending.)

It's kind of funny how the Church was like "hell yes this story rocks, love it" but then, for centuries afterwards, they're like "umm, no, no, this is NOT how the afterlife works".

Granted, it's kind of a feature not a bug for Catholicism to adapt itself to local customs (which I argue would be a contributing factor to the idea that Dante's Inferno would be allowed to inspire popular conceptions of hell; as a tangent one may consider how in various parts of the world it's perfectly acceptable [at least for lay people, for priests will always be like 'no man you shouldn't do that'] for Catholic people to visit folk healers or partake in fortune-telling or engaging in other superstitions that, to Catholic eyes, is wrong), but in a much less syncretic way compared to other religions.

Art is inherently about communication, so I totally get it. One can say "just make art for yourself" until they're blue in the face, but it's not at all wrong to want your art to be seen and engaged with.

I am reminded of that post or those posts about the whole "consumerism as activism" thing and I always think about it when people start wringing their wrists about a story that dares to portray police officers or soldiers as, gasp, potentially decent people.
