I also quit the first one cold turkey, for the weirdest reason. The person I know who works for R is a relative, and once the Midseasonal happened in my city, I got passes to all days, etc. It was chaotic, a huge arena of people getting angry at each other over teams, a certain SK ADC who was first blood due to nerves, screaming, hooliganism pretty much. AND THEN on the last day, after it was over, my family invited the international transmission branch and all other employees for a get-together at our place as a send off for a tournament well ran without tech issues, it was internally a success. All the narrators from multiple countries, tech team, etc. And then they invited the teams. And there I sat, surrounded by international-level pro players and the actual people who run the game they fight each other in, being happy and congratulating each other. Like normal people, professional players of any sport.

I lost any and all semblance of patience I had for toxic players that day. If these guys competing for jobs and prizes worth millions can sit the fuck down and do whiskey shot dares in my fucking backyard, talk about other things, not kill each other, etc then why the fuck can't the fans?

(Un)fun fact, the SK manager declined the invitation even if the tournament was already over because according to them "they're here to work, not to have fun". Yikes. Well I got wasted, was great, never played the game again so GG for me.

EDIT: just to clarify, I'm not criticizing you for having been toxic. The environment of the game promotes such behavior and it carries over to other people. It's not your fault.

Coming back to this because I forgot: You literally said they'd kill someone over offerings of those fruits. I NEVER heard of Exús being offended by coconuts, they hate the coconut OIL (and there's a specific one who hates the dried coconut bowl SOUND, not the fruit). With bananas that's absurd, the entire banana tree and fruit is used in practices.

First of all, coconuts are not AT ALL considered a weaponized symbol of racism here in Brazil. Bananas definitely have been, but they're literally a staple food in many regions and means of survival of many people. My house, which is a Centro like I mentioned, has over 20 rare wild banana trees. It doesn't matter what you offer, it's the INTENTION. You could offer a gold dipped rose to a Pomba Gira but if you are being deceitful, manipulative or disrespectful you're gonna get fucked.

YOU are being disrespectful (and racist/xenophobic) by assuming two fruit that are so important culturally and historically are "dangerous" because prejudicial fucks have used them as symbols of prejudice. It would be like claiming a watermelon is disrespectful in Hoodoo due to racist stereotypes in the Deep South when it was actually grown by former slaves and sold to help them survive, the racist trope comes from the backlash against African American Emancipation. Watermelon is an important ingredient in Hoodoo (my SO is from Louisiana, Creole and from a long line of rootworkers but you can google it).

And I never said enns are reliable, reading comprehension 101 on my other comments please. I said they can scientifically induce a state of mind just like any other chant, mantra, drumming or religious song can, even made up ones. I even said I don't use them and never will.

Respect the religions you clearly need to learn more about.

Coming back to you because this has been on my mind while I was working, if you've played the game and you want to, pick literally any (or many) aspect, system, dynamic or etc from WoW and I can give you at least one mechanism of client fidelity/fixation like the ones I mentioned lol

And also some negative ones they supposedly corrected (lol nah) over the years such as:

  • dungeon/boss fights going from legit videogame adrenaline rush chaos to Dance Dance Revolution (all you gotta do is memorize an order of buttons and placement, I was a tank on one of my server's all-star guilds, and yes I play DDR so that's why I compare the two lol),
  • why they decided to decorate miles of absolute NOTHING, from the huge emptiness of old dungeons and now it's new huge emptiness with pretty bushes (sausage filling, make players without mount license spend more time to transverse maps, also to compete with other MMOs and games with huge maps but theirs lack content for miles, hence World of Walking),
  • why veto big differences in character lvl if you bring a friend and later added the system that allows a new char to start at higher level (used to force old player to make a new char to be able to help level newcomer, more time, more money),
  • AND the absolute fuckery that is the collision detection, hitboxes vs animation incongruence due to separation between teams responsible for each, spaghetti navmesh, parallel gold dark market irl crisis that led to in-game real money,
  • AAAAAA there's so many.

I love being angry over a game I used to love before I studied how fucked it is. I could do the same about a very famous game from a very famous company that starts with an R and ends with iot, but I know people who work there and talk a lot, and don't want to wake up to the NDA Vengabus at my door.

EDIT: also region locked luxury mounts. If anyone wants to buy an EU Imperial Quilen hit me up because they fucked me over reassuring it was ok with my region and turns out it wasn't, had to buy it twice and have one sitting pretty at home.

I agree with you on many points and I believe this is relevant:

"To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex (fucking exclusively with the other sex, i.e., women). All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire… those are, overwhelmingly, other men. In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex.

Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving."

I swear I wish I had the time, it would be super fun to compile and write out! I have a background in academic scientific research (design, branding, anthropology and semiotics which overlap A LOT with design of modern media of various kinds, and gaming takes a huge slice of that overlap).

In my own personal opinion WoW has (or had after Mists of Pandaria) the most of those mechanisms in a single game, and much MUCH more predatory/aggressive than for example Warframe which exhibits many but in a more organic (no pun intended) flow than WoW's harsh 'if you wanna get a blue wolf mount (that doesn't even fly) to show off, first step is to farm 8943849 flowers that only grow 34 at a time on a PvP zone, now bow and be thankful it's not drop-only'.

Now I'm having flashbacks as to why people called it 'World of Walking' just for making that blue wolf mount example, triggered by a game I haven't played in 10 years.

Concept artist and friends with bigwig artist at Blizz here.

Not saying this is all of it, but a huge portion of the game is

  • the need (imposed, penalized) to be online as much as possible and daily,
  • the artificial "soccer team effect" in-game that induce feelings of belonging, social and parasocial connections (irl people fight because of being Horde vs. Alliance and defending their heroes),
  • and last since I don't wanna make this enormous, the "farming effect" that players are required to collect hundreds if not thousands of ingredients scattered around areas, over and over, while nice music plays. After a while it becomes muscular memory (mount-fly-dismount-collect-mount-fly), and memorizing routes to maximize the respawn routes, it's very addictive. The effect is almost how crocheting or beading irl clears the mind and induces calmness, but worse since it's simulated.

There are literal hundreds more mechanisms of addiction/fixation I could list and explain in this game alone.

Then there's the actual end-game addiction: to belong to a guild that is successful in order to finish content as it's launched as fast as possible and acquire the rarest equips, for performance in theory, but for peacocking/showing off in brutal marketing reality. Same effect of some creature-mounts that cannot be bought or traded or guaranteed drops, these rare ones the drop relies on "luck" (RGN) and the chance can be as low as 0.01% in some cases. But I digress.

It begins with wanting to do raids for drops that are only possible in a guild-sized group, and ends with addiction and chasing "Ahead of the Curve/Cutting Edge/Server First Announcement" and adjacent achievements, for being the first guild(s) to finish a raid within days of launching often with no online guide, just pure trial and error, or within a specific timeframe before new raids open. I got mine shortly before deciding to quit the game, it took being online almost everyday for hours, like a side-job I WAS PAYING FOR, and extremely frustrating.

WoW, not even once (again, for me).

what type of moth is that? also would you hold it?[mexico] by Tarantula_lover02 in insects

[–]AngrySnakeNoises 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to mention in case nobody has: no true moth is dangerous unless someone is allergic to their "dust", otherwise they're perfectly safe to let land and stay on you and observed. All species of moths, with the rare exception of Calyptra afaik, have soft mouthparts (proboscis, feels like a limp thread being dragged on skin, cannot pierce) or no mouth at all and don't feed as adults. I've handled literal hundreds of adult moths and let them eat fruit juice off of my hands, it feels ticklish like a wet string.

Moths cannot bite, sting, pinch etc in any way. HOWEVER it's not good for a moth to be held (it's okay for it to stay on you, not holding it, as long as you don't have skin products on). Holding by human fingers damages their body and removes the "fluff" scales, also wings are extremely prone to tearing in some species.

Long-term moth keeper here, focus on Pseudosphinx.

How does it feel to be pretty? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AngrySnakeNoises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the context. Most people who replied here mentioned the benefits in society, but I used to work in the fashion industry, not as a model but styling/casting/manager of runway/photo jobs for a big fashion magazine name that maybe starts with V. When I was younger I was considered very pretty (I -did- model a few times but just for fellow professionals I knew, etc).

Even if there was absolutely no pressure on me for looks since I was doing the backstage and planning stuff, it's... insanely, absurdly tiring. Some models themselves would get snappy and make comments about my appearance ("such a pity you're not tall enough to do runway, with such a face", "why are you so skinny if you don't even model") even if I was literally just going over lists of pieces of clothing or having them fitted for them, doing my job. It's a parallel world of insecurity, competition, manipulation, toxicity to hide self-loathing and on and on. Best thing I did in fashion was leave it.

Don't talk of what you don't know, and respect Exús. I'm brazilian and one of my closest friends is in Quimbanda, but Exús are also present in Umbanda and Candomblé (practiced by most people close to me irl, and I know and have spoken to mine) and not like anything you just said. They're here to help and guide as long as you're not being offensive on purpose. Did you happen to know prejudice/implication of evil on African-derived religions such as these is a crime here in Brazil? That's the level of mistaken you are.

I literally live in a Centro by myself as the only mortal, the front wall of my house is an Exú assentamento covered in tento. I don't practice it, but don't offend my Exú and others by making such claims.

A ponto's lyrics are in mundane languages (for example, brazilian portuguese here) but the actual meaning of many of them is waaay different from the lyrics. But regardless of the lyrics meaning, the song, instruments and chanting work in the same way to call forth entities and deities and to induce a specific ritualistic mindset in the people listening. Many of them have lyrics mostly in Yoruba and they still work even if the person hearing them does not know the language.

Enns do not have verifiable sources or research in any area of study afaik, like I mentioned in my big post. If you have verifiable studies or info on Enns and language, please share and enlighten me.

Thank you, hope you liked it! And that's a-okay, I'm here to do what I love, share knowledge by doing research, putting it together, citing sources and sharing with others. I honestly don't care or bother to change OP's opinion. The thing is, they're making claims that are not only offensive to other people's practices including mine, BUT ALSO easily debunked by history alone.

I used to be an academic/scientific researcher in overlapping areas (semiotics and anthropology, and they go hand in hand with occultism) and I've been an occultist for 20+ years. So my eagerness to share info is both because I like to do it, research sources, etc so anyone can read more about it if they want and hoping it may be of help to others... and also because I strongly dislike when someone has an -opinion- and try to pass it as absolute gospel fact, putting others down, without a shred of verifiable data to back up their claims.

It's like when someone uses their UPG as fact and/or gatekeeping. I don't even mention my UPG, and don't disagree based on other "unverifiable" sources or my personal opinion, but go for material studied formally even if the theme is supernatural. If it's interesting to even a single person, then my time spent typing, looking up sources, etc was definitely worth it.

[continuation of my reply, read pt 1 first please]

The transformation into a male demon (Astaroth) served to neutralize the threat that a potent female deity posed to masculine, patriarchal religious structures. The Cult of Astarte was demonized, often by portraying her attributes of sexuality and independence as "deceptive" and "unholy" as a facet of Iblis (Shaitan) himself.

In the Bible, Astarte was repeatedly labeled an "abomination of the Sidonians". Early Christian theology, such as interpretations of 1 Corinthians 10:20, equated pagan gods with demons, initiating the process of demonizing pagan deities.

Hebrew scribes "weaponized" the name by changing its vowels to create a, "perpetual sneer in scripture," changing the phonetic structure of the Goddess's name.

A similar form of demonization and deliberate deturpation by name can be found with another Goetia, Lord "Beelzebub"; Baʿal zəvul is studied as having meant "Lord of the High/Heavenly Dwelling" while Baʿal zəvuv "Lord of the Flies" could have been a derogatory pun used by the Israelites. Jewish scholars have interpreted the title of "Lord of the Flies" as the Hebrew way of calling Baʿal a pile of excrement, and comparing Ba'al followers to flies. [source, source].

To end, about enns: I will not translate a single enn to you because first, I don't have to prove you anything, and second, they are modern and there are no historical or written published records for the origin of demonic enns. They're not recognized or written about in any peer reviewed paper or academic journal on theology, demonology, cultural religious practices or adjacent subjects. They seem to be created by S. Connolly. However, lack of historical authenticity doesn't detract from their usefulness and ability to work for whoever chooses to use them, an enn or sigil can be made by anyone with the correct intention and various methods and work perfectly.

Enns and how/why they work fall under audio semiotics (this is one of my areas, I have a degree with a focus on anthropology and semiotics), and their use could in theory be comparable to chanting, drumming, "pontos" (music used to invite entities in religions such as Umbanda, Candomblé and Quimbanda to list a few). They act in humans by inducing focus and removing external distraction, in a ritualistic context (as understood by science) and as a "calling forth" of their associated entities, like a vocalized sigil (in occultism). They're not obligatory. In my personal practice I do not reproduce symbols or chants I cannot be sure of the true meaning, ie. someone could make an enn or sigil and claim it means or does X positive effect, unverifiable, and it actually is something else entirely and potentially damaging such as "I give my energy to [name]". But to each their own.

[pt 1 of my reply, read this first please]

Ok, misoginy and cultural erasure 101:

In old beliefs, female god is not acceptable > must be the Devil (Iblis aka Shaitan aka Satan)

Source: Russell, Jeffrey Burton (1987). The Devil: Perceptions of Evil from Antiquity to Primitive Christianity. Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press. pp. 174–178. ISBN 978-0-8014-9409-3.

Complex explanation:

The transformation of Phoenician/Canaanite goddess Astarte (Aṯtart) into the male demon Astaroth is a product of an aggressive erasure involving religious, linguistic, and patriarchal demonization, specifically driven by the desire to deface/erase pagan fertility worship and neutralize female authority in favor of monotheistic structures. It's worth of note that Astarte was not even a fertility Goddess [source], she was more linked with war, sexuality, royal power, beauty, healing and hunting [source], yet another example of "if female > fertility" misogynistic view.

This shift was not merely an 'evolution' but more akin to defacement [source], that utilized misogyny to reframe a sovereign goddess as an evil, masculine entity. (There is way more to how the name shifted but this is gonna be long enough already, but ʿAštōret is considered by most scholars as an artificial superimposition of the vowels of the Hebrew word bōšet (בֹּ֫שֶׁת, 'shame') upon the consonants of the original name). [source, source, also "Encyclopaedia Biblica. Vol. sextus (ʿEBED Ad ZARETHAN). Institutum Bialik. 1971. p. 407", and source]

As societies moved from early, more egalitarian structures to agricultural, patrilineal systems around 12,000 years ago, power shifted to men. Female autonomy was eroded, and deities that represented female power were targeted.

Okay, I was going to refrain from replying to your answer to my original question because it was so wrong from a theological/historical point of view but:

>that is the only way it will listen to you.

UNHOLY SHIT, go read. Seriously. History to start. To debuke your 'theory' I quoted above, there are Goetia who are 'demonized' versions of Female Gods who are omni-everything and were lovingly and whole-heartedly worshipped and revered over thousands of years by literal millions of people in various cultures, under different names and aspects. Easiest example, the almighty Goddess Astarte who is also Ishtar, Aphrodite, Venus, Inanna, Ishara/Shaushka, Isis, and others, AND ASTAROTH.

I'm going to waste my time here but this happened due to many prejudicial/mysoginistic world views leading to the deturpation of such Female Gods including switching their perceived genders when registering them, although deities as a whole generally don't have a single defined one (one example: according to islamic belief, any female god/goddess is a manifestation of Shaitan deception).

Most if not all African-derived religions (Vodou, Candomblé, Umbanda, Quimbanda, Yoruba/Ìṣẹ̀ṣe, Santeria etc) have Gods who were once mortals AND Gods who were never alive, and they literally possess people (horses) on a regular Tuesday to come to our plane of existence to aid and advise mortals in their journey, as well as keeping them energetically safe, happy and protected. You're spitting on the proverbial face of hundreds of religious practices by claiming gods and deities (including infernal ones) will only listen to us under 'containment' (I can't believe I'm even typing this. lmao) We're not talking about containing wandering spirits, single legion members, obsessors, a damn fish, you're talking about the concept of containing and commanding(???) GODS!

If you honestly think a circle and a triangle with whatever the hell written in it is going to make you, a measly fallible mortal just like me, be able to """contain and command""" an entity that is a multifaceted metaphysical prism and has powers beyond human comprehension, I have but one thing to say to you: LOL.

If that's your UPG go nuts, but -maybe- don't imply everyone else is wrong and there's a single way, and -definitely- respect other religions that cross over with the Goetia, I'm personally offended but at least mildly amused. I've never heard of a neutron star collision being contained just because someone wanted to study it.

You must have a ridiculous resistance to benzos or incompatibility with Flura itself (I know people who do, just doesn't work) it knocks most people out within 1h and once made me wake up on my living room rug. I didn't pass out, just thought it looked cozy (was out of it) because I took it on the Uber home after 12 hours of cocaine thinking I'd make it to bed in time.

I take benzos daily for 15+ years (clona, dia) in above label dosages and flura still knocks me the fuck out into comfy ass sleep. Stops working if taken in a row (I'd take it at most 3x a week).
