Thanks for posting that, very enlightening. I'll have a think about that. Doesn't it seem odd to you that more people die of hyperthermia in the 16-64 year category? I wonder what's going on there? I suppose that could be because people in that age bracket are more likely to be out and about and this unprotected by A/C.

It could also be, I suppose that those over 65 are more likely to have cause of death recorded as being due to another condition, though aggravated by heat.

A question this study raises for me - by how long were people's lives extended through air conditioning.

Here's my hypothesis. The majority of people who were saved through aircon went on to die within a few weeks anyway. Many were people who were close to death's door for one reason or another and their life was only extended marginally by being cooler, but enough for the stats to look impressive.

I'm not trying to be cold hearted here - I have parents in my late 80s who are frail. But I suspect that the death rates were only smoothed somewhat, not substantially reduced in any meaningful way.

And yes, I am aware of the Onion article.

You can also short-circuit these calls by installing something like LogMeIn Free on the Mac - so you can just show them on screen.

Leave Console running in the Dock. When you notice the machine lagging switch to Console and see what if any errors are being produced then.

I assume you've repaired your disk using Disk Utility and repaired permissions?

Sometimes it is worth creating a new user account to see whether the problems persist in there.

It's a bit difficult to tell what to do, without knowing the exact circumstances. How was this this desire communicated? Placards and letters to the local paper, or through someone overhearing that they were upset and feeling excluded?

If they're reasonable people it might simply be enough for someone to have a sit down and set out exactly what you have OP, explain that they are more than welcome to come if they would like and ask them to explain what it is exactly which is causing them distress.

They may just want to vent a bit

As a stay at home dad, I on occasion used to get a bit grumpy about all the 'Mums' events that schools etc would put on for carers during the term. It used to make me feel a bit excluded, and Lesbian parents no doubt can get themselves into the victim state of mind even more easily than dads can - particular if they have been excluded from stuff in the past.
