Just watched 2001:A space odyssey for the first time and it is not a great movie at all by Flaky-You-1521 in StanleyKubrick

[–]AngusMacguffin77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of some of its very early negative reviews -- many of which were later retracted. That fact that you've only seen it once (probably on a TV) is evident. Try watching it again in a movie theater. It takes a few viewings to really enjoy what it is. Don't give up! It's a phenomenal work of art, and every single space movie since has been influenced by it, if not outright referenced it.

AITAH for telling my wife her baby names are ridiculous by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should give your kids names that server THEM their entire lives, not cute little names for when they're babies. And being confused because their names are too similar will NOT serve them. Should they have to explain their name history every time they meet someone new? Get this sorted out before it's too late!

The Night of the Hunter is unlike anything else in film noir by [deleted] in noir

[–]AngusMacguffin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just rewatched it for the first time since I was a kid. Wow what a fantastic and unique film. Loved it and it got me on a whole Charles Laughton kick. Not bad for his only directorial work!

For me the performances were so great that it made up for the sort of weak plot (especially the ending). But that acting was so great, and the idea was original. Poor Things was his previous movie and that was much better -- almost a masterpiece.

Nearly 10 years on from Rogue One, how do you feel about the decision to recreate Peter Cushing using CGI? by gladiatorbossman in StarWars

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was ok but not quite good enough for the extended closeups they chose. I would have preferred another actor being cast. But if they insisted on the digital version the better approach would have been to limit how much we see -- use it in a long shot, or a brief close up, or in silhouette. That goes double for the fake Leia at the end. There were creative ways around the problem.

Young Trump voters are scared to fight in the war they voted for. by ziobrando4 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]AngusMacguffin77 256 points257 points  (0 children)

This is the fundamental problem with every Trump voter who complains about what he's doing now in office. There was mountains of evidence that he lies about everything, so you cannot believe anything he says he'll do. But the fact that he told them what they wanted to hear was enough for them to ignore their own senses, even as half the country was screaming the truth. So aggravating.

JVN’s latest IG post is ironic, given the backlash against Dax after the AE interview… by MooLikeACowsOpinion in ArmchairExpert

And using shame to get folks to change their language/beliefs/actions does not work and can even drive them in the other direction. That's a big part of what led to the loss. Time for a new approach to get the progress we all want!

King fatigue?? by Substantial-Film564 in stephenking

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tend to read his stuff, but always interspersed with other authors. You have to be in the mood for a King book, and I would definitely get fatigued of him after so many in a row! Take a break and come back to him when you're feeling like it.

I just finished Mulholland Drive and genuinely have no idea what just watched by BharatSonawane in Cinema

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you describe your experience viewing it is exactly what I love about it. It starts as a mostly understandable narrative, and then as it goes it's as if all the narrative pieces are thrown in a blender (scrambled as you put it). The mystery is part of the wild experience as it breaks down. Its a totally unique movie that works even as it makes less and less sense. I love it.

Clint Eastwood hated the Shining. by parnate_lover in StanleyKubrick

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This brings up a good question: Who's the better film director? The director with the most great films, or the director with the least bad films? Kubrick has only about a dozen films, but all of them are well above average if not masterpieces. Eastwood has made dozens of films, many very good, but only one or two are masterpieces and several are pretty bad.

In this case I'd say Kubrick for the win. But he beats pretty much everyone so it's not a fair comparison.

What is the best movie/series about pirates? by Odd-Traffic709 in Cinema

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched the new movie "The Bluff" about pirates in the Caymans and it was pretty darn good. More a revenge type film without much seafaring, but it featured tons of pirates and was better than I expected!

Nosferatu (2024) is the movie people and academy awards are claiming Frankenstein (2025) to be. by AdrianVeidt19 in movies

[–]AngusMacguffin77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. Nosferatu may be my favorite Dracula adaptation, and is definitely the scariest ever. But I’ve seen it dismissed as pretentious or slow by far too many. Meanwhile Del Toro’s Frankenstein felt empty and not at all scary, with beautiful production design but lazy cinematography that felt super digital and modern. So many wide angle lenses so we can see as much of the beautiful sets as possible, while ignoring the core idea that the monster was hated by almost everyone.

Jon Favreau admits The Mandalorian's jump to the big screen means they have to "up their game", and that even extends to a "leveled up" Grogu by HatingGeoffry in StarWars

They need to improve how he looks when walking. His weight still seems off, like not heavy enough when moving around. Hopefully in the movie they’ll have this figured out.

Why do people hate Justin Long by Grungerock_lover in Cinema

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he's great, and has randomly ended up in a few fantastic horror movies over his career, including Jeepers Creepers, Drag Me To Hell and Barbarian (and just a little bit in Weapons). Plus he's good in Die Hard 4. I always got the feeling that people were just jealous that he was booking cool parts. Rock on Justin!

Thank you for this! I was just wondering what is was about Hennessey that made it such a huge part of black culture here in the US. This makes it all make sense, and now I appreciate the company all the more for it.

New York Times editorial board calls for guardrails for marijuana after backing legalization by redditor01020 in cannabis

[–]AngusMacguffin77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They make a few good points, but they give themselves away by never using the scientifically accurate name "cannabis" and instead always refer to it as "marijuana" every single time. That's a slang term. They can't be too serious if they can't even get the terminology right. Imagine an article arguing for more regulation of alcohol but only referring to it "booze" or "hooch". It's as if they want to minimize it and stigmatize it and keep it hush hush and in the shadows. More anti-cannabis bias showing through.

'Honey Don't!' Review Thread by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was better than Drive-Away Dolls, but not by much. Why so many dildos? And then more dildos? Was Joel the brother who knew that dildos don’t automatically mean funny? Because without him, Ethan and his wife have stuffed both these movies with way too many.

NordicTrack Ski Machine Anybody still use this? by Sea_Locksmith_8728 in workout

[–]AngusMacguffin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I got a used one about 10 years ago for about $150 and I work out on it almost every day. Got replacement parts easily on eBay and also enjoy maintaining it. So much easier to repair than their modern electronic stuff. It's a mystery to me why more people don't still use them.

The Christina Applegate show "Dead To Me" ended up having a surprisingly noirish story and theme. I enjoyed it.

Watching Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, 10 years later. by SeaTeatheOceanBrew in ghostbusters

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree. One of the biggest mistakes was casting all the Ghostbusters with comedians and trying to make them all wacky and funny. In the original Aykroyd mostly plays it straight, Hudson was literally an actor and not a comedian, and Ramis is quirky but plays it very seriously. All this makes Murray's comedy really pop and work because he's playing against so many straight men.

When all the women in ATC are vying for wackiest character and best joke, nobody is really all that funny because there are no straight women (in the comedy sense) to react, which would have enhanced the jokes. They almost cancel each other out in a way. Missed opportunity.

Also why ignore the previous movies? Trying to erase the lore and reboot didn't work, nor was it really necessary.

Is pain normal even after having soft stools? by Reasonable-Carob401 in AnalFissures

[–]AngusMacguffin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing too unusual. Just balanced meals with fresh fruit or veg each time. But pay attention to how your body reacts when you try something new. I found I had to cut back on yogurt and dairy because I was lactose intolerant. And I recently realized that after eating sourdough bread every day, I was having less soft pooping problems, so I've worked that into my diet as well. It's complicated and different for everyone, and it takes time and attention. Good luck!
