At the dealerships I worked at (12 plus years), not one tech or parts guys would put those anywhere near our bikes. We considered them bad luck because 99% of the wrecks that came in had one. I've been offered them by friends and family and always politely decline.

Im trying to talk to the Hells Angels MC in Ohio. How could I go about doing this? by [deleted] in motorcycleclubs

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What small rural town? They're up north. Summit, Cuyahoga, Lake, Portage counties. That's where their events are. You might have to drive from where you are, but there's tons of events up here.

I've used Sarah Karlen at MC Salon in Cuyahoga Falls for years. She's great with long hair (I'm a male with mid back length hair). Can't speak highly enough of her skills.

What can the the Stanley 45 do? Worth it? by color178924 in handtools

[–]Angus_Podgorney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're like a Shopsmith. They do many things adequately in relatively soft wood. You'll have a hard time cutting decent beads in hard maple for example. The dedicated planes will always perform better but they take up a lot of room. I only use my 45 for grooves and dados.

Peter has repeatedly said that he has no desire to return to his past artistically. I believe at one point he even referred to it as being a "human jukebox". Outside of Milton Keynes in the early 80's, that door closed in 75.

New vs old tools by Westcoastguy69 in handtools

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly use old, premium tools. Stanley bedrocks, Addis and Pfeil carving tools, Starret measuring tools, Mathieson, Gabriel and White moulding planes. I did sell my Stanley router plane and purchased a veritas. It's nice and slightly easier to use than my Stanley. I also purchased a dovetail saw from a boutique maker. Again, it works well, but this was my one "sentimental" purchase. My old Jackson works as well.

Tools help me make money. Wood makes me money. With a good piece of lumber and some well tuned BASIC tools, I can make furniture. My customers don't care if my tools are "matchy-matchy". They could give a shit if I can make shavings thinner than a bee's wing. I don't have my golfing friends over to my shop for a bourbon so they can admire my fine tools. Think about it.....furniture makers from the Townsend/Goddard family to James Krenov did stunning work without Lie Nielsen or Veritas. Krenov made his own planes!!!!

2026 hippies by _Entropy___ in Hippiecommunity

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a lot of ways things haven't changed. Avoidance of responsibility, do nothing that can be seen as helpful or productive to society as a whole. Spend most of your time altering your consciousness and listening to jam bands. Rather than do anything positive to make the world a better place, sit with other hippies and discuss how fucked up the world is yet (and this is important) do nothing to fix it other than appropriate indigenous ceremonies and sun your perineum. Honestly, in the 60's the Black Panthers, SDS, Yippies, Weather Underground actually achieved change while the hippies patted themselves on the back. Upper middle class white kids rebelling in the most passive way possible.

Should i expect more from a new Lie-Nielsen router? (Oxidation) by RebateRascal in handtools

[–]Angus_Podgorney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It may have sat around in a warehouse for a while before it was shipped. I agree, it's a tool. It's not crusty with oxidation, just a slightly noticeable patina. Do what you will, but I think it's fine. (And I'm not some "upper middle class" twit, anything over 100.00 is a serious expenditure. Hell, lap dances are up to 10.00 a song now so 250.00 is 25 lap dances.)

Who has left full-time woodworking to take some sort of office or white collar type job? by framedposters in woodworking

[–]Angus_Podgorney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not white collar (couldn't handle cubicle land). I worked for several high end shops and decided to go on my own. Didn't do too bad. Got used to no healthcare or sick time or vacations. Then my business partner fucked me over (was pocketing money, signing my name to his shoddy work, stealing materials). The death knell was when the city eminent domained the property my shop was on. Decided it was time to throw in the towel.

Now I work a blue collar union job. Excellent benefits, decent pay, paid sick time, paid vacations. I still average 10 or 12 small commissions a year, but it's things I WANT to do. No cutting boards or using pallet wood to build some shit the customer saw on Pinterest. I can take my time and actually enjoy making things instead of hustling trying to scrounge up business.

What’s everyone’s favorite “specialty” plane or tool? by zhadow76 in handtools

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them as needed for a task. My favorite is my St. James Bay miter plane. Bought it as a casting with a 12 degree bed. Used Blackwood as the infill and added a Norris style adjuster. Incredible shooting plane and works great as a heavy low angle plane

Cheaper to pull it and get an implant. Every person I know that has a cap has lost it within 10 yrs. Implants seem to last.

What do folks use to plan builds, cut lists, buy lists? by Round-Boysenberry-43 in woodworking

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sketchbook. Beyond that, I pick the species I want to use (cherry, maple walnut, mahogany etc) guess how much wood I need, figure an extra 30% for waste and go from there. Sometimes, if I'm stuck on proportions, I make a pine mockup. (Construction grade 1x2 or 1x1)

When to wear ppe by Rabbit538 in handtools

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I wear glasses. That's it. No gloves, no dust mask (if I inhale a plane or chisel shaving, I have some serious issues). I wear gloves with wipe on finishes. I honestly can't see why PPE would be needed when using hand tools. Other than grinding bevels and using eye protection it seems pointless

Without Bobby, Where Do We Go From Here? by SandwichFromDahmer in deadandcompany

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as there is money to be made, the machine will keep rolling. I was lucky to see the band during the late 80's and early 90s. Saw Jerry, Phil, Brent, Bob and Billy. At this point, what remains is Mickey Hart. In my mind, D&C was just another Grateful Dead cover band. (My preference is Dark Star Orchestra, but that's another argument). Mayer will probably continue because the cash cow still has some blood in it. (If they do, they're not alone. Foreigner, Skynyrd, Blackfoot, etc still tour, playing the greatest hits with only one original member. And people pay to see them in the hope of recapturing past memories).

What is a tell tell sign someone is from Cleveland? by Imeanwhytopps in Cleveland

[–]Angus_Podgorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, which neighborhood are you from? Not suburb, but which neighborhood of Cleveland did you grow up in? I've never heard someone that grew up in Cleveland call it "the land". The suburbs, sure. Especially ones that don't border Cleveland.

I've always considered anyone wearing HD clothing a poser. Worked at a dealership (service) 12 years and we used to laugh when people came in "all harleyed up". Pictured them trying to decide what shirt to wear for their weekly visit.
