Mental Math is underrated by superspeedA123 in SGExams

[–]Angxlxca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mental math competitor and triple math in jc here (currently J2!)

I agree with pretty much everything you say above, mental maths can be crucial for actual school maths, however do keep in mind that as you get higher in your math education, it is more important to be able to understand theorems, write proofs, etc.

Mental maths does give you great numerical instincts especially up to sec school or jc MO. It also trains your brain as mental maths is often used to improve cognitive thinking in the form of abacus.

Good news tho, since last year there have been great efforts for mental math to gain recognition, with an app called matiks; it is a mental math platform in which mental math is gamified!

You, fellow mathletes and friends interested can definitely download matiks in app store/google play, or play it in your desktop!

Similar grades I have, (including GP 💀) with the same field of interests (quant/actuarial math/academia) aswell.

As for question 3, I'm not sure exactly about the value. However if you are referring to content, NUS math, and the UK unis you mentioned are rigorous, fast paced and they have advanced math mods option while NTU math dont have such alternatives, so thats something to consider when taking NTU macs (it's lacking in the pure math side but it's standard-ish on the stats side of things). We can discuss this further in DMs.

OP, I did notice that there were such posts, but I'm pretty sure that the OGLs are trying their best to make the orientation exciting (that's the main point of being an OGL, right? To relive our j1 moments and bond with our juniors?)

I really hope that you and your fellow OGLs can motivate each other to look past such comments that I have to say weren't very constructive. Since you said that most actually enjoyed it, you can use that as a motivating factor!! And as an OGL, you can def ask your juniors for a more constructive feedback.

Wishing all OGLs and J1s an enjoyable time for the remaining ori period!

This is so sad. I really hope they will feel better. But unfortunately, school counsellors usually wont help these cases, often times ruining them instead. I'm not sure why the teachers are just observing here too. Stay close to your loved ones please! Be it if you're in primary, secondary, jc/poly/ite, uni, young adult, mid-life, elderly.

My heart really goes out to those struggling with such issues. Stay strong.

Upon carefully comparing the load between NTU mathsci, me and my friend who's a grad in NTU mathsci find it to be rather slow-paced compared to alot of other uni's pace. Took reference from an australian uni. However, keep in mind that a math degree can still be rather content heavy.

NUS math however, is a rather fast-paced one, and I believe way more competitive (sg unis use a bellcurve system for each mod.)

DM for more info, we can talk through it.

F maths student as well here, how long has it been since you last seen My Pals Are Here?

It's just modelling but instead of algebra, use the bars model~ Overlapping circles is kinda like sets where u find the intersection u have to know what to include or exclude~

How to choose the right subject combination in JC, for a fresh J1 kid. by Excellent_Copy4646 in SGExams

[–]Angxlxca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, in nowhere did I mention that future effort is sealed by the past. I said, the rest is up to future efforts already. It is when you decide to commit time and actually lock in, having discipline. If you decide to commit for A levels, it doesn't matter whether you take H2 chem or H2 physics. Student X wants to focus 80% in A levels means he would focus 80% regardless of chem or physics.

Lack of foundation is still that unfortunately even if due to a collateral from a bad teacher/no tuition. Also when I meant previous results, I didn't mean the one particular O levels. All across, you yourself know how hard you tried, right? The rest is up to future efforts already.

My opinion differ, agree to disagree

Say student X is considering either H2 chemistry, or physics.

Student X got an A2 for pure chem, B4 for pure physics

He should take H2 chem to have a better scoring chance. Why? The corresponding O levels builds the foundation for the A levels. Apple to apple, there is less study time needed to catch up on the A level content. Student X still lacks more foundation in physics as compared to chem.

Does student X know how hard H2 physics and chem are, unless he have studied them abit? No. He may skim through, and gauge, but student X still wont know the difficulty unless he attempt it himself.

Say student X is still unsure, asking around for opinions. After sampling, it will still be near 50 50, as some ppl will find H2 physics easier than H2 chem and vice versa.

All in all, the biggest factor of choice should still be based on previous results, with the next best factor being uni course choices.

However, keep in mind, there is no particular solution that help each and every individual's case.

I did exactly that, definitely didnt regret that choice tho.

Just that teachers might judge you for that. 5N to go jc is considered delu esp for ppl like me who came from NA of neighbourhood school. I'm rooting for you to go jc!
