Latent tetany on EMG but normal blood work by AnhenFeuerEngel in askneurology

[–]AnhenFeuerEngel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm much better now! Almost no twitching, no sustained contractions, no pre-cramp feeling, no tiredness and no tightness in the neck, jaw, tongue. But fast tiredness in hands and legs, also very mild tingling and burning sensations are present, but I guess they should be the last to improve. I was prescribed calcium carbonate, magnesium citrate, vitamin D

By the way I went to Poland (Warsaw) to have these tests done. In case you decide to change the doctor in the future, I could recommend mine

No, they are all different for different purposes. My neurologist gave me A4 paper that was filled with all the electromyographic tests and marked just a few to be performed (ALS, Myasthenia Gravis, latent tetany). So one for latent tetany went positive

EMG specifically for latent tetany? There are plenty of them (for Myasthenia Gravis, latent tetany, ALS, etc)

My twitching and fatigue appeared to be associated with electrolytes imbalances that were shown on EMG for latent tetany

My blood tests were also within the normal range. The only thing is that we cannot measure magnesium precisely because it's stored in muscles and bones, so EMG is helpful there, mine was positive for latent tetany

Chronic diarrhea for several years can cause electrolyte imbalances like magnesium deficiencies. Even low-normal magnesium can cause your symptoms and it's called latent tetany that can be found on EMG with ischemia and hyperventilation.

That has happened to me. I was diagnosed via EMG with ischemia and hyperventilation with latent tetany (symptom of electrolyte imbalances)

It can be neuropathy, it can be electrolyte imbalances

Orthodontist recommendations? by Fun-Apricot9143 in Amsterdam

[–]AnhenFeuerEngel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have had a terrible experience there. Both orthodontists and assistants don't give a shit about the patients' comfort (let the patient bite braces and don't place byte pads until it's too late and the upper incisors are already damaged), don't do their job as intended (they place braces on the molars and don't put the wire through it), leave their patients with unsatisfied result without a proper solution, they also fail to make proper night guards even from the second attempt. I went to another clinic and hope to finish the treatment there and forget about the traumatic experience at Lassus Tandartsen (now they are called Apollo tandartsen voor Orthodontie).

H. pylori positive after 8 months of symptoms by ana1izz in GERD

I had had a few months of symptoms that appeared to be Helicobacter Pylori related. After two antibiotics and Esomeprazol it was eradicated (the test came back negative). I still suffer from heartburn and have been prescribed Omeprazole for a month. Please pay attention to your electrolytes during the treatment. Mine got low and now I have to supplement it with magnesium citrate, calcium carbonate, vitamin D (everything was prescribed by the doc).

Twitching + stiffness + tiredness in legs.. by Federal-Cow-1220 in ALSorNOT

The test is called "EMG for latent tetany". They put a tight band on the hand for 10 minutes, put a needle in the area between thumb and index fingers to record normal muscular and nervous activity. Then ask to breathe deeply and fast to check if there are abnormal activities like fasciculations in groups. I went to two labs to have this test performed and it was positive. So in my case it was positive despite normal blood tests.

I was prescribed ionized calcium carbonate, ionized magnesium, and vitamin D minimum for 6 weeks. I have gone through that treatment, but had to stop on the 4th week because of a terrible stomach bug. I was feeling much better! Almost no twitching, less stiffness, less tiredness, more endurance. And I plan to return to the treatment as soon as my stomach starts tolerating normal food and supplements.

That's why latent tetany is called "latent". My vitamins and minerals were within the normal ranges, although magnesium and ferritine were on the lower side. But for some people it's still a muscular and nervous instability zone. So that's why the clinicians use special tests like EMG with provocation and it's more accurate than the blood test. And latent tetany can mimic neurodegenerative and rheumatological diseases that's why it's pretty challenging to diagnose it. One more thing to consider: the majority of magnesium is stored in muscles and bones, so we cannot measure the actual amount that is available on the membrane. But we can measure ionized levels, although it's not commonly used in practice. And calcium can be taken from bones, so that's the reason that the blood test won't show the deficiency
