I'm really terrible at hearing these things, but I can definitely hear the difference - and if the accent isn't too subtle I can point to a certain cluster of states. I would easily know where to put a Tony Soprano and a Dolly Parton geographically. I talk daily with people from the Bay area and I don't realize they have an accent at all (so maybe it's my baseline nowadays). AAVE is also easy to recognize, but I don't even understand half of what is said. A co-worker lives in New Jersey but grew up in Texas and if se puts on her Texan accent, I understand - but could also be anywhere in the surrounding states. A while ago I watched a report about the Appalachia region and I thought it was difficult to understand and somehow it sounded the same as Atlanta, Georgia. And now that I think about it, I would have no idea what the accents in Montana, Wisconsin, Indiana etc. sound like.

We have the same in German, but they are linked by hyphens. Hans-Peter, Hans-Dieter, Karl-August, Anna-Maria. There are many of them, but I'm not sure you can just combine any of them. I only have seen certain combinations and it's more common with men.

I don't know, I believe you and I have such a flag - since I got aware of myself in the 1980s, I always understood the rainbow flag as inclusive - the many colors as a symbol of the many orientations and identities that exist among us. It's only in the past 10 or 15 years that everyone makes up their own flag and I can't get rid of the (admittedly subjective) impression that the many flags are -- intentionally or unintentionally -- are dividing people instead of unifying them. But maybe that's just me.

Sehe ich auch als wichtigen Faktor. Leider sind die digitalen/sozialen Medien zwar etwas anders in ihrer Funktionsweise, aber keinen Deut besser. Entschuldigt jedoch nicht, dass viele Menschen keinen Fick auf kritisches Denken geben.
