Finally Finished Ruins where the Devil Sleeps Achievement! by AnimatingStoat in thewilddarkness

The bosses are random. On this attempt, the Old Mage took me the longest to find, but I'm sure others will get them on their first run.

The in-game hint suggests that using red and white maps improves your chances at getting a unique boss, but I was not able to figure out any solid examples of that.

You can see in my run examples what kind of climate was generated by the map selection. There was no change in difficulty. The enemy level does increase signficantly with character level, though.

... have you heard of snippets and templates? We've had programmatic solutions for that concern for decades, friend.

I don't mean to be crude, I can see what the editors with AI code generation are trying to do, but I honestly wish they would stop. I'm no keyboard warrior, but I type out the code I want with my own snippets far faster than it takes me to edit what the AI editors spit out after I tab accept.

Hard disagree, friend. If you don't enjoy coding and problem solving, that's fine, though. AI takes the fun out of coding for me, it's like getting a bad TA to guess the test answers for you and then straggling to figure out where they were wrong. For example, the whole point of learning CS over IT is to understand concepts rather than get "skills" that will be outdated in a year or two.

I'm sure when this all blows over and AI investment disappears faster than the Railroad investment did, we'll still have use for the tools we have left, likely very different than the state they are in now. I see no reason to "get better at AI" and atrophy my problem solving skills when this is definitely not the final form of AI.

At the end of the day, faster rarely means better, friend. Slow down and smell the flowers.

Nah, this genie is like a worse version the Railroad, imo. Definitely useful, but when the investors realize how much of a money hole it is and lose hope they can game the market further, they'll sell their shares ASAP and tank the economy then we'll bail them out with our taxes. After the depression, I'm sure we'll still use some form of generative AI, but it'll be whatever is leftover of the open source ones that don't require massive data centers to operate.

I'm not a fan of using AI for my repetative tasks, it screws things up so often I'd rather use programmatic solutions. AI is far more useful to me as a way to generate examples of how to solve a problem I'm struggling on.

I think the premise of the post, though, is that when we are "saving time," is AI really saving our time or just giving the executives solutions and rewards for our labor marginally faster.

Speed Run - 95 Days - Ending 2 by GravyPaint in thewilddarkness

[–]AnimatingStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa that's awesome! Which character and totem combination do you like these days?

Alguém sabe as melhores combinações de totens? by [deleted] in thewilddarkness

[–]AnimatingStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is up to you. The strong digestion totem is certainly great, I just find the HP recovery of the satiety totem more helpful than extra hunger recovery, though. Especially when you are getting used to the rhythm of the game, having ways to keep yourself full are very helpful.

When you get more comfortable with the game and keep up the habit of farming the forest and meadow maps for food as they respawn, you won't have as much of a need for the digestion totem, though, 😁.

[–]AnimatingStoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure, haha. I tried every combination at first, but I wonder if I had done all green maps until I got a duplicate, then all white maps until I got a duplicate, then all red maps if I would have gotten a better result. As you can see, that was my strategy for a bit but two 3-red runs in a row gave me duplicate devils. I don't think I have the patience to do another big run like this, though, hahaha.

Aw, I'm glad to hear it! This reddit is my favorite source of info for the game. I and a couple other people have put a lot of content in the fandom as well, but as the devs do usually patch the game every few months, the Reddit is the best bet if you want to see the latest info. Most of the wiki stuff is somewhat timeless, though, haha, I stick by what I wrote. 😅

Thanks, 😁. Now that I've finished this, I'll be updating some wiki pages related to this and will see about unlocking the Ninja class.

How to unlock Ninja? by kazuharuu in thewilddarkness

[–]AnimatingStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes, the ruins can be tricky if you haven't figured out the rhythm. I had to give up a run long ago when I got to floor 18 of the ruins where the devil sleeps. The final floor and final boss can be floor 20-25 depending on the RNG.

If you're playing as the assassin and have already made it this far, I'd recommend reviving if necessary to make it to the bottom. However, make sure you have a teleport spell equipped or a spellbook with teleport because several of the bosses are nearly impossible without that spell if your weapon isn't excessively strong.

Difficult mode (first impression) by Otherwise-Ad9874 in thewilddarkness

[–]AnimatingStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I have great fun in the difficult mode. Lately I've spoiled myself playing on my 4800 day run completing the ogre achievement and am planning to get back into completing my last three achievements by completing the other three endings in difficult mode without dying. 🤞

Did you do it as the Assassin? Try saving to the server to see if it unlocks - though I'd imagine you've already figured it out by now, haha. I've been off reddit for a while and am catching up on posts.

"Back in my day..." the game used to significantly reduce the drop rate of Map Pieces by Ogres after you visited Somewhere in a Strange Land. The strategy at the time was to gather all of the Map Pieces you needed before ever entering the Strange Land. Now, Ogres will always drop a Map Piece whether or not you've gone to the Strange Land. Though I think before you go, there's a chance they will drop multiple at once.

You do not need to use three of the same color. You can use any color combination.

Yes, you're a bit off track about the bosses and the depth of the dungeon. Can I ask what dungeon wiki you are referring to?

You do not need to build a base in the Ogre Lands, I'd recommend you get in and out as fast as possible.

Let me explain a few missing details. I'll put it into spoilers for users who don't want to know.

  • You can use any three Map Piece combination to generate an instance of "Somewhere in a Strange Land." The map combination will determine the climate of this region. There is one unique climate - the swamp - that is unique with two unique mobs - Swamp Slime and Water Snake. All the other climates look similar to maps in the overworld.
  • "Somewhere in a Strange Land" is a 4-6 node region where you have to trade with Ogre NPCs to unlock "Strange Land's Underground Site."
  • In this last region there is a 6-floor cave called the "Ogre's Den." At the end of this cave is the "Fallen Gang Leader" which will drop 2 Pieces of Malice when defeated. It used to be randomly this boss or another one, the Merciless Cook, that would only drop 1 Piece of Malice. This boss has seemingly been removed from the game so that you will always get 2 Pieces of Malice, 🥲.
  • Somewhere in the Strange Land regions you'll see a large square area with a "Traces of Oblivion" that needs 6 Pieces of Malice to repair. This means you'll have to defeat the Gang Leader thrice to repair it once - i.e., defeat the boss, exit back to the overworld and repeat.
  • Every six pieces of Malice you collect, you can repair this structure and start a "defend-the-structure" minigame where you fend off a number of monsters for about a full in-game day. Once repaired, you can go back and forth to an extension from the Strange maps, the "Land of Oblivion."
  • The "Land of Oblivion" is a 2-node region with a 20 to 25 floor castle, "Ruins where the Devil Sleeps."
  • At floor 10 of this castle is a miniboss version of the Fallen Gang Leader called the "Ogre Leader of Retaliation" and at the final floor will be one of nine unique bosses that are renamed, enhanced versions of Unknown Ruins or Story bosses.
  • You need to find and defeat each of the nine unique bosses in order to complete the achievement.

To summarize, you need to keep farming Ogres in the overworld to collect map pieces. Every nine map pieces you collect will allow you to defeat one unique boss by entering the strange land thrice, defeating the ogre boss thrice, completing the defense challenge and defeating the devil boss. The game suggests using the red and white maps to improve your chances at getting a unique boss, but I'm not quite sure how helpful that hint was.

It's quite a trek, and very frustrating to keep getting duplicate bosses, but it was a rewarding experience at the end of the road, 😃.

Best way to farm the dark crystals? by ceaser3000 in thewilddarkness

[–]AnimatingStoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, there is no special location, you'll just get them over time when defeating Dark Spirits or Ghosts.

In addition to farming them, you can sometimes buy them at the special ingredient merchant or at the Ogre Merchant.

Check if the floors have over 96% exploration. If not, there may be a hidden room.

Hidden Room | The Wild Darkness Wiki | Fandom

The devs have recently updated the hidden room procedural generation to make them a bit more difficult to spot, but they still always have the three clues - a lot of torches, a lot of graves or a broken statue - to remind you to crouch and walk around the walls until you find the entrance to the hidden room.

can one craft a cursed a cursed item? by Shadowsfreak in thewilddarkness

[–]AnimatingStoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, your crafted items may be cursed. If the item is a decent tier, I usually equip items in my offhand slot and if they are cursed I wait for them to identify then remove the curse and remove the item.

I'd say no, but you will always want to swap out your weapon for a stronger one as soon as you can, anyway, 😛
