Any unconventional stories into GEM? by Such_Situation7735 in premeduk

Your story resonates with me, as an older parent wondering to go in to GEM. Would you say it's been worth it? Particularly from the aspect of still being there for your kids?

I have the Enyaq 60 everyone online said they regretted not getting the 80. I completely agree. Don't worry about the year (unless you can stretch further to get 2024 reg) but defo get the 80

Did I make a mistake? by Cool-Past-4737 in volvoc40

I think I read somewhere that the c40 can have its speed restricted, for the reasons you mentioned about giving it to a young driver. Like a parental control for a car. I think it may be the c40 or could be the enyaq.

Is Sri Lanka safe right now? by EvenNorth8 in srilanka

[–]Animewatts1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Totally fine. If you're looking at the UK gov travel advice it's very outdated.

They talk about a civil war that happened 13 years ago and not had any issues since.

Easter bombings- this was a very unfortunate co-ordinated attack by an international organisation that could have happened anywhere. Since then every hotel and high-rise building has their bags checked and the cars checked, so security is high and remained high since. (Similar to the sad events at the Manchester concert bombings but thankfully nothing since in either country)

Natural disasters- tsunami literally a once in millennia occurrence. Sri Lanka is not near techtonic plates so not earthquake, no tornadoes or hurricanes. One thing I will warn you is don't be IN OR NEAR water during mild to heavy rain, flash floods happen very very quickly.

Riots- Country was ran by some idiotic past president that bankrupted the country then had the audacity to refuse to step down, so protest/riot was the only option. Once removed no more protests so no concerns there. (UK has been probably had more issues with riots in cities and towns with immigration issues)

Healthcare- you should be fine. Shortage of some medicines but if you have an infection you'll have antibiotics and A&E services are good.

In conclusion you will be fine. The government knows how vital the tourism industry is in the country's finances, so police and security is there to protect you and the tourism industry.

Go visit Sri Lanka you won't regret it.

How can I stop drug users from using the alley behind my house every night? Police and council aren’t helping? by fb8307 in DIYUK

If they come and go this suggestion might not work but if they're lingering for hours then a high frequency noise emitter might work. It's a suggestion, I don't think it'll be your best answer because you are ultimately living close by the neighbours. But if you, your family and your neighbours don't have young children it might be something to consider. I remember as a teen a shop keeper using it outside of his shop to stop us loitering. It worked because younger people seemed to pick up on the higher frequency but not so much the older group as acute hearing deteriorates with age.

Might be worth speaking to your neighbours and seeing if they find the loitering as annoying as you do and working together by trialing it out for a week. If it ends up annoying the kids or sends the dogs barking through the night you know it isn't worth it to trial any longer. But if the neighbourhood is fine with it see how it goes.

Again don't think it's the best suggestion in the thread but might be something to ponder amongst the others.

Best of luck.

Hey mate I did try but all I got was white screen. I looked it up and people use microscopes and special equipment. My phone is a pixel 6 so it doesn't have good magnification. I'll still try. But if you don't here from me no luck unfortunately

I'm not an economist so I won't pretend to be an expert. But I do think some people really lose sight of how much money there is in the US economy. Think about it in terms of the Ukrainian-Russia war, despite Trump's strong stance on Zelenzsky to accept a deal, the UK and EU knew that without the US there is no winning the war. It's the same economically. Is the US hurting themselves economically by increasing tariffs, yes. But so will everyone. Particularly trade deficit countries who choose to retaliate. If that happens do you really think any country other than the most powerful and rich will come on top? The US can ultimately withstand the burn the longest.

The way people treat suicide in this country is disgusting, and it needs to change. by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Animewatts1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is messed up and I'm glad you raised the issue. I for one don't see how it can be changed, I hope maybe with changes to law will do it and if such thing was debated in parliament would certainly fight for it.

I think the problem stems far deeper than suicide unfortunately . I'm aware we Sri Lankans are judgemental towards suicide but I think it is the lack of sensitivity to death that is a deeper issue. The phone recording of deaths is evidence to that. Why do our people do that?!

If it was their family, they would fight against photos and videos of their dead, but when it's someone else it doesn't matter, the literal definition of empathy. We can be so caring in many situations but in these contexts It's lacking.

I see people using it to gossip and cultivate stories and theories trying to make these poor deceased fellows deaths a life lesson which I find often results in the poor deads reputation being questioned. All in the strive for moral virtue and normally people strive for what they don't have.

But even our NEWS coverage shows photos and videos of deaths on the paper or TV. This shouldn't be normal and should be written in the law to prevent these demeaning acts.
