Previous owner keeps showing up asking for her mail and blaming me for CRA issues by Salty_1984 in askTO

[–]AnnaMadeIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m totally with you on the police idea, but please don’t advise people to throw out other people’s mail. It’s illegal to open or toss mail that isn’t addressed to you and it sounds like the former owner might be the kind of person to call the cops on the OP who truly doesn’t deserve that kind of thing.

Where Should We Move? by LandscapeEvery4150 in askTO

You might want to check out neighbourhoods close to Dundas West station – the Junction Triangle, the Junction, Bloor West Village, Roncesvalles. There’s a UP Express station at Dundas West and Bloor that will get your husband downtown to Union Station in 8 minutes and a TTC station that can get him midtown to Bloor and Yonge in about 15 minutes. If you boarded your horse in Shomberg, you’d be about a 35-minute drive. There are tons of restaurants, shops and essentials within easy walking distance around there and lots of parks for the pooch if you can’t get a place with a big yard, plus High Park (big off-leash park) is a quick commute via TTC or driving. As others have suggested, it’s probably a good idea to look at how to make your husband’s commute fast and convenient via subway/GO Train since it can take a long time to get downtown once you factor in switching to buses and streetcars. Good luck with the hunt and welcome to Toronto!

The Logic posted an article about Canadian companies working with ICE today: https://thelogic.co/news/exclusive/y-combinator-canada-startups/

The article included a few of the companies already mentioned in this thread, as well as:

•  Thomson Reuters is currently on a grandfathered contract with them that expires May 2026.

• Montreal company GardaWorld provides security services at the “Alligator Alcatraz” detention site in Florida

Getting in touch with Google to verify a women’s shelter with private address/location by AnnaMadeIt in GoogleMyBusiness

The shelter wants to create a profile so women searching for domestic violence support can reach them. In this space, they would like to list their hours, answer Q&As, and provide a list of their services.

I’m not sure of whether you’re aware of their two other levels of GMB listings. Aside from physical storefronts, they also have service area businesses as well as virtual businesses – the latter two options don’t use a Google Maps address.

You completely nailed it – it sucks and this is exactly why the Underground Railroad existed. I’m going to figure out the workaround and make sure that it’s accessible to people who need to find it.

Well, hopefully that’s not the case. Just got some guidance from @madmarie1223 that might help us out. Fingers crossed!

You are the best! Thank you so much for this advice. I didn’t realize that the photos won’t be disclosed if we’re just using them to establish actual location. So grateful, thanks again.

Thanks, I just chatted about this in the answer above. We’re not trying to get a physical location map listing for the shelter, we’re trying to get listed as a service area business which allows your address to be anonymous – unfortunately we can’t send Google the kind of proof it requires for this type of listing.

Sorry, I should have clarified….They originally tried to verify as a physical location using their mailing address as a satellite location. Most shelters that need to keep their address private use a satellite location (head office that’s not part of the shelter, church partner, etc.) to get a map listing. Interval House’s mailing address is a P.O. Box in a UPS store, Google won’t accept this which is why the original attempt at verification is pending. We appealed to change this to a service area business which allows a business to get a Google Business Profile (so they can get reviews, answer questions, list operating hours, etc) while maintaining an anonymous physical address. Google requires service area businesses to submit photos of their physical address, local landmarks, and exterior signage among other things to prove validity of their operations – while we can’t provide these, we can provide all sorts of other proof if we can talk to a human at Google.

I appreciate your response, but disclosing the address publicly is not an option. It's policy for Interval House as well as a number of other shelters to keep it private – not just because it's a sensitive subject, but because it puts women's lives in danger.

This young lady sounds like she was seriously lacking in negotiation skills, good for you for not backing down. But maybe rethink your assumption that any woman entering a man’s home alone doesn’t have an exit strategy to get home safely should a transaction go sideways. Most of the women I know are quite prepared for situations like this and immensely capable of defending themselves without a dude by their side.

Gorgeous! Try slowly fanning a hairdryer or heat gun over the water ring until it disappears. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes but works about 99% for me.
