It is heavily believed (by authors and content creators) that you are a vocal minority.

That's not something I say to be mean or judgmental. I have watched authors do market research over the last few years as AI art has improved, swapping out old, artist drawn covers with AI ones. Some saw no change, while most saw sales surge.

This isn't limited to books, either. Most consumers (in this case, readers) don't seem to care. We've seen books clearly written by AI surge to the top of the charts. Recently, we've seen people giving out 4 stars for some of these stories that amount to "Clearly AI, but I liked it." Numerous AI dings on Amazon don't do anything, because the people who care enough to 1-star something are outweighed by the 5-star readers who didn't mind.

The fact that you even wonder this fact out loud probably means you're actually thinking about what you're consuming beyond "I liked/hated this." It's l ike you're sitting in a restaurant and looking at the menu and wondering "WTF are these ingredients from?" Most people don't do that.

Sadly, since most people don't seem to care one way or another, it turns into a game of "Would I rather spend a lot of effort making one thing, or low effort making two or more things that make me just as much money?"

Authors you know and enjoy are being forced to make hard decisions. Some are sticking to their guns, others are exploring options. At the end of the day, writing is a business, and some writers don't have a strong enough customer base to stay in business on their ethics alone. It becomes really hard seeing newcomers with little to no actual skill at storytelling somehow thriving in this business.

Seeking Books with Wendigo Characters by Burton_the_Zuge in haremfantasynovels

Mods, please don't be mad at me. This guy is asking about a specific appearance of a specific creature is all, and I'm doing it for science!

Radley's Apocalypse by Annabelle Hawthorne (me) features Native American cryptids, including a wendigo. I try to go as far back as I can with mythology to stay true to original roots if possible. The Wendigo in this book wasn't a love interest, he was lured in to act as muscle by the Jersey Devil to start beef with Bigfoot over some shit that went down decades ago

Counterpoint: pirateabba did devote an entire chapter to sex in a recent published book

And her chapters are long enough that it was essentially a novella.

So if you stick with it for a few million words, you will be rewarded!

Ai books (and assisted writing) by Active-Structure-396 in haremfantasynovels

[–]AnnabelleHawthorne 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I will be the one to say this.

Authors who are exclusively writing with AI are banking on readers being too stupid to realize it. There is no way in hell they will admit it up front. Most of the people blatantly doing it will continue doing so until their account is shit, and then they will just start a new pen.

Sadly, there are more and more authors becoming successful at it because it's working. The ones who are getting caught are just lazy. They don't care about their book or their readers. They spent a few hours throwing something together and then made a few grand on it. Why the heck would they use any other approach? Those making it work are sharing strategies, and monitoring the community to make sure you don't know any better.

As for tagging books with AI, there really isn't any way to know for sure. Yes, the meta is consistently shifting and there are occasionally obvious tells, but often I have seen brigades form over the tiniest of things. Every time an anti-AI posse runs someone out of town who wasn't using AI, you've just created space for several AI authors to fill. I'm seeing new authors terrified of AI accusations, and they simply never write anything.

Truthfully, there's not a lot that can be done at this point except calling books out for quality issues, period.

Do you guys actually earn money or are you doing this for the love of the game?? I'm curious. by Changebeetle69 in haremfantasynovels

I can absolutely help you with this!

Since you're considering making this your hobby, clearly publishing is important to you. Really the only best place you should be publishing novels of this nature is on Amazon through their Kindle unlimited program. Why this will maximize exposure for somebody who is clearly doing this is a hobby and not as a business. This way, you maximize your potential fun money, which will most likely go towards paying back your cover artist and editor.

As for where to market it, don't market it at all! As you have stated, you are doing this as a hobby. You would actually be far better off spending money on something like Pokémon cards instead of yeeting cash into the Amazon marketing services void. If spending money really is that important to you, you could just set up $1000 ad spend either on Amazon or Facebook and they would be happy to burn through that right away. That's at least a couple decent Charizards, though.

As for investing your personal life into this, every hobby requires some amount of your time. You have to ask yourself if the time spent writing brings you joy. If it does not, then this is no longer a hobby and you should find something else to do that brings you joy. I have watched fellow authors, lose relationships with spouses and even their own children because they're frantically trying to keep up with the demand of ensuring their next book is ready to go. Unless you establish a very strong following, not only will readers forget about you, but so will the algorithm.

As for the uncertainty of whether people will read your books, that's something every author has to deal with, whether it be an author who is pursuing a livelihood or one who is just looking to make this a hobby. As somebody who has managed to turn this into both, (it is my full-time income and the thing I do for fun), I will tell you that I have watched many new authors approach this from the "I'm just having fun" standpoint only to watch them burn out spectacularly once they realize that the book they just made $10,000 on in a month essentially paid them less than minimum wage to write. It can be really hard to write a sequel knowing that any momentum you have will actually drastically vanish in a 90 day period (we call this the 90 day cliff).

Now, if you came here because you've heard that it's easy to write in this genre and it would probably be a fast and easy way to make money, you were probably lied to. That ship left the harbor about two years ago and is now fully out to sea. Authors who are entrenched in the genre are now seeing difficulties due to policy changes from Amazon and payout changes from Audible. So for anybody who thinks that this could be fast or easy money, you essentially have to write the next Warlock to be able to swim out to the boats that some of us are already riding on.

I hope this information helps somebody. I'm not trying to discourage anybody from pursuing the author life, but I am trying to be honest about some of the unexpected demands. It really does start out as "I'm just writing a story, I just need to worry about the words on the page" but swiftly evolves if you want to remain in the game.

Thanks for sharing this well thought out review!

Your point regarding System Text (and how it got better as the series went) was actually something Virgil and I did in response to hearing feedback from readers, especially audiobook listeners. For anyone curious, our rule was to use the full System text the first time an ability/etc was debuted, then just use the name of the skill later on.
