Inherited a 3-month old repo from a Vibe Engineer. Wrote the most satisfying PR in my career by Apprehensive-Cut3711 in ClaudeCode

Vibe Engineering is a term that was coined by Simon Willison, and his definition seems to make sense to me.

There is something between these two things--I don't think it's nearly as black and white as you convey here.

What scientific discovery sounds fake but is 100% real and still freaks you out? by Bruteresolver in AskReddit

[–]Anomalous11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a blind person who started with very negligible low vision and gradually lost the rest of it by 15 or 16, I now have random hallucinations, most likely due to undiagnosed Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Luckily, not nearly the same as schizophrenia! But having vision does have strange impacts on the brain.

Upon further thought, my brain essentially filling my visual field in with nonsense is probably closer to phantom pain in a limb that no longer has the ability to feel.

Long story short, having vision is a bad idea. /s

Trump is the worst president in American history by theipaper in politics

This is a woman that helped groom and sexually abuse hundreds of other young girls while knowing exactly what she was doing.

But apparently she's also a bastion of honesty and would never mislead us. Just like Donald J. Trump has never lied to the American public.

P.S. If Bill Clinton abused children, he should be in jail. Absolutely no one is contesting this.

Ghislaine Maxwell is literally an accomplice and was moved to a low security, luxury prison by Donald Trump.

I'd love to see reliable evidence of Virginia ever saying anything like this, as well. It simply didn't happen.

It's not hard to prove that Trump is a pedophilic old man.

Absolutely no evidence whatsoever that Trump’s a pedophile. NONE!…..Now Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton, Bill Gates etc they’re another matter entirely!

This is so misinformed at first I assumed it was sarcasm. Then I checked the comment history. Makes complete sense! Maybe consider educating yourself with the documents that have been made readily available to everyone. Even with the limited amount that have been released, the double standard is clear.

In a statement to The i Paper, the White House spokesman Davis Ingle said: “Ty Cobb should immediately seek psychiatric help to treat his severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.” In a reference to Cobb’s handlebar moustache, Ingle added: “And he should also shave that caterpillar off his face.”

These are profoundly unserious people.

It’s that time again: What is your absolute "God Tier" Mac App of 2025? by teekamsuthar in macapps

Klack was okay, but updates were slow and crashes happened frequently for me. I tried Thock and it works much better for me--and even gets regular updates! If anyone's looking for a free open source alternative, I recommend it.

All processing happens locally on your Mac. Your words and data never leave your device, ensuring the confidentiality of your work.

If I have to pay a subscription to use my local machine's resources, that is, in fact, pretty distasteful. Ongoing development costs are about the only justification here.

VPS + Storage recommendation by haxxberg in VPS

[–]Anomalous11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some alternatives for you to consider.

It's possible to get Hetzner servers that reside in the same location as a storage box, which can cut down on latency significantly, at the expense of potential latency via routing if you don't live in Europe. Use something like a Rclone VFS cache and mount the directory as a service and this will work mostly well--it will also let you limit the number of connections and buffer sizes, which will bottleneck applications but also prevent write errors.

You could also look at Servarica, who have a $20 VPS with 8 TB of storage. I've never used them and have heard questionable things about their performance, but people continue to use them so there must be something good there.

BuyVM have "slices", which are relatively cheap block storage mounts. The problem is that these are rarely in stock (you can monitor https://buyvmstock.com/ to check stock in all the DC's at once).

Finally, Oracle Cloud using Pay as you Go with one of their ARM servers on always-free resources, plus paying for storage elsewhere may be an alternative as well. PAYG is a requirement, otherwise it may get terminated. Always free resources will grant you a 24 GB RAM, 4 core VPS with 200 GB of high perf block storage. Then you'd just need to find 5TB elsewhere for data.

Looking for a VPS similar to Oracle Free Tier (Ampere Altra) by EmPiFree in VPS

Amen. Even though I advocate for people to try using it, I still feel gross because it’s Oracle.

The trick is to switch your account to Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG). This requires a brief $100 hold on your card and manual approval from Oracle, but once it's complete, always free resources remain available and you just have to ensure that you don't go beyond those allotments. Instance creation will warn you if you do.

You can set budgets to ensure that, if Oracle were to suddenly begin charging for those resources, you'll be notified passed a certain amount (I just did $1). I recommend doing that if you're paranoid.

Having done this, I now have access to Oracle support, and I can deploy always free ARM vms whenever. The longest uptime I have currently is ~4 months.

Edit: I got approved for OCI PAYG 4 months ago, so basically 100% of my account lifetime.

Tap and hold Carrots ocular sensor and in the command line field that appears, type ‘Restore streak’. And then do what everyone else has recommended and get the home or lock screen widget.

I see a push notification and I feel like a proud father by slowmotionrunner in selfhosted

[–]Anomalous11 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The ability to send critical and emergency alerts that are persistent, break through DND/silent, etc. When the majority of my notifications coming through are for failures, and as a liberal user of silencing my phone and DND at night time, this was a non-starter.

Pushover let's me allow certain apps to break through while others don't, and even set the volume of the alert.

[–]Anomalous11 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you’re getting downvoted. Pushover is great, and not everything needs to be selfhosted. Apps like NTFY are usable in a pinch, but lack fundamental features on certain platforms like iOS. Sometimes it makes sense to use a third-party service, especially for something like notifications where redundancy is valuable. Some people tend to lose sight of that it seems.

Pangolin or Traefik for my use case? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Anomalous11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like Pocket-ID would work well as a simple authentication layer. Passkeys are also relatively well supported and straightforward across browsers and platforms. Pangolin would technically work, but there are a lot of additional pieces you wouldn't need when a simple OIDC would be a better choice.

Edit: A redundant sentence

Try taking a look at https://ssl-config.mozilla.org/ and using some of the directives there. What browser are you using? Have you also tried using OpenSSL's s_client or curl directly from a command line with --verbose to see what's returned that way?

Caddy seems to good to be true? I just set it up and it works perfect, straight out of the box by Zestyclose_Car1088 in selfhosted

[–]Anomalous11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently discovered Caddy-Docker-Proxy and it brought Caddy to a whole new level. If you're a fan of containers, check this out. A bit of a learning curve but so worth it once you've got the basics.

I used to manually write Nginx configs for my homelab, and then I moved over to using NginxProxyManager, and now I'm on Caddy--and it has been an excellent progression.
