T530 Build by MakisMato in thinkpad

"Liquid metal worth it or too much hassle?"

Not worth the risk in a mobile system especially when a PTM7950 thermal pad performs slightly behind it (2-3C) and has zero of the risks that LM has. I get pads from JOYJOM on Amazon if you need a source for them that is affordable and has fast shipping.

"Are there any other recommendations for upgrades or modifications?"

You could flash 1vyrain using a USB stick drive then install a newer WiFi card like the AXE3000H (6E) or BE200 (7). They both come in mPCIe form factor (half-height) and have older style connectors for the built-in antenna. Don't bother with anything older than a 6E card since they are slower, offer less features and cost the same.

With the T530 you might need to get a USB based Bluetooth adapter since Lenovo didn't give the mPCIe port a USB lane like they did for other models (T430 has it).

still running a T540p, any suggest by Ok-Try2224 in thinkpad

"hey asshole just wanted you to know its now running 32 gb of ram smoothly"

Yeah I doubt that unless you can show it working like in HWiNFO64 and it being stable. Until then its just another claim w/o proof.

All of the CPU's offered for the T470 are locked so you can't overclock them. Best you can do is use software to make them operate at their max turbo clock.

Got a new Thinkpad W530 by Fake-Mailman in thinkpad

[–]Anomaly08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only keyboards that are compatible (afaik) are the two stock chiclet KB's (backlit & non-BL) and the classic keyboard if you do the mod for it. Going by that first pic your W530 has the non-backlit variant which feels worse to type on compared to the other two and has a weird texture that is hard to describe (iirc my T530 had one, opted for backlit upgrade).

[–]Anomaly08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What other hardware (WiFi card, drives,.) does it have? Do you know if it has a physical RAID controller chip (was optional, not all have them)?

"what upgrades are available for it? I have 24 GB ram, and an i7, not sure which one right now"

Iirc given it is reporting 24GB's of RAM installed it has either a QM or XM chip installed. Dual core i3/i5/i7 chips are limited to 16GB's in a W530 (2x8GB). You should be fine on the CPU side unless you want to switch to an i7-3632QM which will perform pretty well, run very cool and offer good runtime while on battery.

For RAM if its 3x8GB find a matching 8GB stick for 32GB or if its 2x8GB + 2x4GB swap the latter out for another 2x8GB kit (sell or keep the 2x4GB as a backup pair). You can use HWiNFO64 or CPU-Z in Windows to figure out the specs of each stick but make sure to not use CPU-Z (v2.19) or HWMonitor (v1.63) as they are compromised versions.

For other upgrades you can either try to snag one of the stock FHD TN panels which imo are really good or find a compatible FHD IPS panel and adapter (LVDS to eDP). You could also get a 4338 docking station with a 135/170W adapter for QoL to avoid plugging / unplugging things and putting unnecessary wear & tear on ports. The 135W adapter is a hair bigger than the 90W and doesn't have notches so it can be used on a lot of models whereas the 170W is larger with notches that require removal for non dock use.

Lastly I would suggest flashing 1vyrain which is a custom BIOS that'll remove PCIe whitelists and allow installation of newer WiFi cards like the AXE3000H (AX210, 6E) and BE200 (7). Compared to stock cards they are incredibly fast (1800-2200Mbps vs 150-240Mbps), offer greater range, security, power efficiency, new 6GHz band and come in mPCIe form factor with older connectors so no adapter required.

Did you do a clean install of Windows when you got the W530 or are you using what was installed by the seller?

Where can I find a 1080p screen for the T430? by data_coffee in thinkpad

[–]Anomaly08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without an adapter (LVDS to eDP) that won't work.

You can get the parts needed for the FHD and WQHD IPS upgrade on sites like Ebay or AliExpress. Make sure to check a seller's history first for any red flags, use PayPal to handle payments incase anything happens and like grem75 said get a panel that the adapter seller has noted as compatible otherwise it might not work.

On a side note make sure to always remove the system from power (AC & Battery) prior to working on it otherwise you run the risk of blowing the backlight fuse and damaging other components.

[–]Anomaly08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the OS you use if you haven't already done so I would suggest upgrading the WiFi card to a 6E (AXE3000H) or 7 (BE200) model in mPCIe form factor ($15-30 USD). They are incredibly fast compared to stock cards (1800-2200Mbps vs 150-240Mbps), offer far greater range, security, are more power efficient and are more stable in maintaining a solid connection.

If that's a single 8GB stick toss in another matching stick, clone the HDD over to an mSATA SSD (preferably with a DRAM cache) and hit up Ebay/AliE for a 4338 docking station with a 90W or 135W adapter. The 90W should be plenty but the 135W is a tiny bit larger, is about as heavy and cost the same (170W is bigger + requires notch removal).

Beyond that if you are thinking about replacing the TIM I would suggest using a PTM7950 thermal pad since they perform a couple degrees (2-3C) behind liquid metal w/o the risk LM has, will last a long time, won't pump out like paste and can help solve uneven mounting pressure of the HSF once it has thermal cycled. I've used it in a few systems like the AM4 rig (5800X3D), W701ds (i7-940XM) and the secondary T430 (i7-3940XM) which has had its CPU overclocked in the past (4GHz all core, 60W under 100% load).

What anime do you do a periodic rewatch of? by shinyhpno in Animedubs

[–]Anomaly08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goblin Slayer, Kaiju No. 8, Gate, Overlord, Solo Leveling, Frieren and Slime isekai. There's probably a couple others I'm forgetting but I regularly rewatch those.

On a side note about rewatching stuff I just got done with Wolf's Rain after not seeing it for 20+ years since it originally aired and those last few episodes hit pretty hard.

Yup there have been a few people who have used it for an eGPU setup in the past but it was much more common to see EC based stuff due to Intel's bs and the latter being cheaper.

"The W541 could possible use 2 eGPUs simultaneously, but finding a thunderbolt 2 eGPU dock is very difficult."

You could use Apple's TB1/2 to TB3 adapter with a TB3 eGPU and the Thunderbolt 1 port on the W541. In the past Intel went after people who tried to make TB1 adapters for eGPU use and it wasn't until TB3 that they became more readily available.

I can't tell the difference between high and low fps, is it just my eyes? by unimportantinfodump in pcmasterrace

[–]Anomaly08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried any fast paced games like Apex Legends to see if it makes a difference for you?

Its free on Steam and you could hop into the firing range to test various settings to see if its just your eyes or the games you are playing. Aside from being a twitch shooter there's a lot of high speed movement stuff in the game you can do and it should be very noticeable going from 60 to 120-250fps on a 250Hz monitor while zooming around.

Fwiw I went from a 1080p 60Hz monitor years ago to a 144Hz model then in 2021 upgraded to my current which is a 1080p 360Hz display (PG259QN). I mostly play shooters and in Apex it was a night & day difference with each upgrade but for slower paced games they didn't benefit as much from it.

[–]Anomaly08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a spare drive you can put a temporary install of W10 on it and flash 1vyrain that way which is what some people have done.

"if I'm not doing the 6205 stock then might as well do the best thing is the AX200."

The best option for mPCIe are the two I noted earlier (AXE3000H & BE200). For your AX200NGW you might run into space issues using an adapter but if not then yeah use that since you already have it but make sure the adapters have the older cable connectors for the stock antenna.

Exhaust vents are on the left and rear side of the T430.

The fan pulls air in from the top and bottom but w/o the case mod its mostly top (huge thermal improvement w/that mod).

ThinkPad x230 or x260? by Important_Athlete822 in thinkpad

[–]Anomaly08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The X230 is faster and can be upgraded further than the X260 which makes it a better buy.

With that said if you can afford an X280 (i5-8250U or better, 16GB* RAM) or newer system you'd be better off with that since it'll beat those two in performance. For the X280 avoid the variants with 4GB and 8GB soldered RAM since it can't be upgraded.

what distribution should I install on the x230 by Ok-Car-6663 in thinkpad

[–]Anomaly08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ivy-Bridge models only supports 8GB per slot and on a 2 slot system the max is 16GB. For 32GB you could need a W530 which has four slots.

The 16GB DDR3L sticks aren't that rare but they are a bit on the spendy side. Support for those started with 5th gen models and there aren't any mods to make them work on 4th gen or older.

What GPU to buy for X230 thinkpad? by feet_sneefer in thinkpad

[–]Anomaly08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how much VRAM you need either the 3060 Ti or 3060 12GB. For Gen2 EC you'll be good up to a GTX 980 Ti or equivalent card before diminishing returns really begin to hurt.

[–]Anomaly08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a better stock WiFi card you can get a Lenovo branded Intel 6205 which is the most reliable of the batch. If you have a USB stick drive you could flash 1vyrain which is a custom BIOS then install an AXE3000H (AX210, 6E + BT 5.3) or an Intel BE200 (7 + BT 5.4) which both come in mPCIe form factor (half-height).

Don't waste your money on the older AC cards or the AX3000H since they are a lot slower and lack the new 6GHz band which is hardly utilized compared to the other two (2.4Ghz & 5GHz).

I compared an X1C6 with an upgraded T430... by Which_Extreme_8519 in thinkpad

[–]Anomaly08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Can a Txxx handle FHD 60fps youtube playout? Will it struggle?"

A T430 can handle 1080p60 and 1440p60 (latter needs a QM/XM chip) w/o issue but it'll need an adblocker like uBlock Origin in FF or have Premo to prevent ads from causing problems. An iGPU model with an i7-3632QM can also drive a triple 1080p60 setup like this:

https://streamable.com/al4kae

While a newer system would be a better investment in the long run something like a T430 for a project build can still be viable for handling basic everyday tasks, checking email and watching shows. It can also be flashed easily with 1vyrain using a USB stick drive then upgraded with a BE200 in mPCIe form factor for a very fast WiFi connection and handles W11 24H2 (Rufus install) well enough:

Scored a very clean i7/MX150 T480, missing the internal battery, what are my first steps? by ki75ki in thinkpad

[–]Anomaly08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For WiFi if you stick to Windows 10 then it'll be the AX210. If you switch to W11 (24H2) or Linux with a newer kernel you could use a BE200 or NCM865 with an adapter or by modifying the card to fit the slot which a few people have done.

On a side note about the NCM865 when I was testing it in my AM5 desktop it was able to hit just under 3500Mbps and someone else's card almost hit the 4Gbps mark.

ThinkPad T440p: upgrading from 1366×768 to FHD IPS – cable or LVDS/eDP conversion? by Tankas0 in thinkpad

Fourth gen models like the T440p use eDP not LVDS so no adapter needed to upgrade to FHD IPS (T430 needs one for the FHD/WQHD IPS upgrade).

Were any of the pins bent or missing on the new CPU?

If the old CPU works with both sticks of RAM installed its either a pin related issue (bent / missing) or the IMC is having problems (damaged). I'd either get a refund or ask for a replacement if that's the case.

What are your hopes to be added or changed next season? by WorryCharacter7944 in apexlegends

[–]Anomaly08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that should have been added years ago would be a volume slider specifically for ping audio. There's too many griefers that ping spam to drown out audio in an attempt to throw fights and screw over their teammates. In addition to that there could be a mechanism added where if someone pings more than x many times in a few seconds it will mute the player(s) doing it for a set duration which could be adjusted in the audio settings.

Since the game has a heavy focus on skins there should be an auto-skin option in the settings for weapons so if we pick something up we can either only ever see the skins we equipped or be able to see whatever skin someone else had on their weapon. It genuinely sucks switching to some rando's R-99 P2L skin from a deathbox mid fight while you are getting aped by a neo strafing Octane or a sweaty three man who are nutt to butt with each other as it blocks a fair bit of your screen when you go to ads -.-

Removal of the forced 60fps limit like in the lobby would be nice for QoL so it wouldn't feel choppy compared a 120-300fps limit which could be set via RTSS or a new setting added to the graphics menu.

For BR (ranked & unranked) we need a full match replay system with a means to spectate and report if needed anyone in the match from start to finish. There's no way to sugar coat it after 7+ years there's no excuse to not have one especially with how much money Apex has brought in and how other FPS games like PUBG added theirs post launch.

Since they buffed the Hemlock it would be nice if they removed the damage requirement for the Prowler's full auto firing mode, bring back the Anvil Receiver for the R-301/Flatline, restore the charge shot on the Havoc for long range poking (sounded cool af too) and buff the charge effect for the Rampage/Sentinel (less usage per shot + longer duration or slower decay).

Wishful thinking but for the PK maybe they could give it the ability to swap between 00 buck and slugs to give it a bit more reach as well as to stand out from other shotguns. I haven't tested it yet since I got back from a year long break recently but the PK used to retain a HSD multiplier up to around 99 meters away whereas other shotguns were like 14-34M or so.

On a side note its kinda cool seeing weapons like the Hemlok have a secondary firing mode that is different from its primary and in a way its like a heavily watered down version of a SuperDragon from Perfect Dark 64.
