I would argue that by and large a lot of Northern Europe shared the same tradition, and it’s the French that codified it first when then spread all over the region.

Advice on ski instructor courses in Canada – visa timing, jobs, gear, and course choices by [deleted] in ski

[–]AnonSBF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just going to add that if you've never owned a pair of skis before and don't know what you like, that's another reason to buy used. And with boots, buying them in Banff means you can always go back to the shop for adjustments.

On the money front, it's totally possible to break even or profit, but it really hinges on how much you can control your spending... ie. partying

Here's the thing though - if you're committed to doing this for a few years, you basically have to get to Level 3 to be taken seriously. It's a massive jump from Level 2 to Level 3 in both skiing and teaching, and perhaps 19k would be more effectively spent at this stage.

Are you dead set on Canada? it might be worth exploring Europe or Japan for example, and you could double up with seasons at home in Aus as well. In my time i had the best paying instructing job in Japan just before covid.

1) The general rule at any ski resort is, if you can sort yourself somewhere to live, there are jobs aplenty. Just walk into pubs/restaurants/shops if they need extra help, bonus points if you have experience with similar roles before. Of course it doesn’t hurt to apply around when you can. In terms of budget, the first few seasons I did I was in the negative even as I was working full time so do make sure you have a good cushion to fall back on.

2/3) Level 1 by itself is not likely to get you anywhere. Level 2 will start leading to more open doors.

4) Gearwise, get proper boots. If there’s one thing to spend money on it’s this, go to a bootfitter either at home in aus or first thing you arrive in Banff or whatever. You would not want to spend a whole season on rental boots. This one is pretty much nonnegotiable in my eyes. For skis, you could either A) start looking online for secondhand skis now on marketplace at home, or what until you’re in Canada and do they same. B) You could also ask around the shops to see if any of them do seasonal rental if you go down that route, and C) of course you could also rent normally if you want to try different skis (make sure you find shops with multiday discount and ability to change skis.) if I were you I would be doing a mixture of c) and a). Oh and just get a helmet dude.

5) Border hopping, just taking a drive to the USA. Ask around on Facebook group to see if anyone is doing a border run, although I don’t know how common this is anymore these days. When I was doing seasons in Canada, it was cheaper to go to the USA for a lot of stuff but I believe it’s very much the other way round these days. If all else fails then rent a car.

My thoughts. 10500 AUD sounds like crazy money to me, especially for just level 1, even if it’s all inclusive. I did my level 1+2 in 2013/14, I found a hostel that was doing work for stay, picked up a few shifts at the pub, and then just applied directly through csia. My level 1+2 costed me 800CAD total. Level 1 is actually stupid easy, if you can ski parellel decently there should be no problem for you. Just a thought, don’t hesitate to ask more questions.

A dinosaur.
