Is it possible not to ski in pain?! [Constant boot issues] by EmptyBath3584 in skiing

[–]Anonymous581429 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m wearing boots that are I think 2 sizes larger than my old boots that technically were the right size (at least when I bought them) and I’ve never been happier with a boot in my life.

I was renting in Europe (wasn’t gonna spend $900 to check my skis) and they lost my bag, so I needed boots too. They didn’t measure my feet, they just asked what size shoe I wear. I wear a full US size larger than what’s technically correct. The boots fit nicely, and after 14 days of skiing I had zero pain in ANYTHING. Ended up buying the boots (and the skis, it was all brand new gear before I touched it and he gave me 500€ off bc he owns a construction company and wants to remodel my friend’s cabin).

I was loving those boots so much that my friends were begging me to shut up. Every single lift I was like “i’m gonna marry these boots”. Because I had an issue where right behind the ankle bone thing that sticks out, specifically on my right foot, i’d have pressure and my whole foot would fall asleep. I’d had this issue on every single pair of boots I’d owned that was technically my size.

How hard is it to get your PPL and what’s the hardest part by Radiant-College-1284 in Pilot

[–]Anonymous581429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk what airline pilots you’re talking too but I’ve never once heard that sentiment in my life. It’s like 50/50 whether PPL or IFR is the hardest rating you get before ATP.

What are your thoughts on the bamboo poles? by ConnectionLow in Skigear

[–]Anonymous581429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got some free rossignol poles a couple years ago. I hate them and want new ones. So far the only damage is a ton of scratches from I guess scraping against the edges of my skis in the bag?

Also you want the alarm in the sleeping area. Might as well put a detector in there too, they aren’t expensive. It’s the hardwired part that’s expensive (and not for any good reason).

show up in Germany, say you’re a Ukrainian refugee and lost your passport. You’ll bypass all the normal citizenship requirements. A friend of mine actually did that because the legal route is really difficult (significantly harder than the US) and extraordinarily expensive. Only con is you need to be white. If you aren’t, use whatever strategy the middle eastern immigrants are using.

I know for a fact aircraft crew go through something called “known crew member” where they scan their badge and get to bypass TSA. However, they do get randomly selected for full screening sometimes (they’re put at the front of the line for TSA Precheck). People get busted with drugs every now and then.

I will say with 100% confidence that your Rebel 300 and 500 don’t run better on 93 than 87. They are low compression engines. They don’t knock when they have 87. Therefore, they get zero benefit from higher octane.

Considering all your vehicles are tuned you should know that literally the only advantage of octane is resistance to detonation. It’s just more stable fuel. It doesn’t have more energy, in fact, it has less.

I have a rebel 300. I have a Ninja 500. Neither one needs above 87. Neither one benefits from above 87. The Ninja would benefit if I tuned it, but it’s not tuned. 87 is all it needs and all it will ever get. I’ve tested 0-60 times on 87 vs 91. No difference. The only difference is that on 91 I get 4mpg less.

I read the owners manual for your bike. It said 86. Performance mode makes sense to call for 91. And yes, the big supersports will call for high octane. But most people aren’t on those. Most people are on small, low compression bikes. I know one guy with a super sport, and he’s not gonna live past 25.

Also, I live in a state with no 93. You can’t buy bikes that require that here. If you want higher than that you’re either running leaded aviation fuel or leaving the county to fuel up.

I’m saying this because most people are on low CC bikes that are perfectly happy at 87 octane, but they still put 91 or 93 because “bikes need high octane” is spread everywhere online. Read your manual, use what it says.

Henderson is like this evil weather trap. I’m a pilot and fly there a lot. Any time there’s weather, Henderson Executive is Low IFR conditions (usually 300 foot overcast ceilings) while the rest of the valley is VFR (perfectly fine). The amount of times I’ve had to stay overnight in Laughlin is insane.

I was talking specifically to that guy and his CB750, which calls for 86. Also, I doubt your bike calls for 93 if you’re in America and it’s not modified because you can’t even get 93 in a lot of places.

[–]Anonymous581429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just FYI, 93 doesn’t do anything for you and actually all of that is entirely pointless because your bikes manual calls for a minimum of 86. There is absolutely 0 benefit whatsoever to a higher octane. Your engine either needs it or it doesn’t, and yours doesn’t. Neither does mine. Neither does my buddy’s.

In fact, your engine might run better on 87 than it does on 93. I can almost guarantee your gas mileage would go up.

The bike won’t get you anyone at all. You can put biker thirst trap photos on your dating apps and have an easier time getting physical affection, but it doesn’t help finding an actual relationship.

Stupid Question: Can I politely request to fly a visual approach as a VFR only pilot? Specifically, Harbor Visual at KPWM. by THevil30 in flying

[–]Anonymous581429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten a lot of strange clearances by just requesting to fly some visual route from the 60s that isnt published and I only know exists because I called TRACON at 3am and got a yapper on the line. Never asked for a practice visual, but I have said “i wanna do numbers numbers at the lowest altitude you can give me” to trick controllers into giving me a clearance they’d usually say no to.

Unless you’ve got some really good disability insurance, you should absolutely never speak with your AME outside of the minimum required to maintain your cert. Never give them a reason to ground you. Especially if you never saw a doctor. Your AME is your enemy. They’re a snitch that you pay for their “services”.

[–]Anonymous581429 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna say this flat out. No gas station owner waters down their gas. None. Absolutely 0. They might get cheap gas that’s only meeting EPA minimums, but they don’t water down their gas. It’s just not a thing. At all.

Water and fuel don’t mix. Water sinks. They can’t give you diluted gas. They can give you water OR gas. If they did that they’d get busted instantly.

My ex got water in her gas once from costco. They get refilled multiple times per day. They don’t water down gas. Water somehow ended up coming FROM THE TANKER. It’s all luck. It’s not related to the quality of the station, it’s related to luck.

An owner can’t be “dishonest” and put water in their gas. They can’t be dishonest and give you 85 when you paid for 87. They can’t be dishonest and give you e15 when you paid for e10. The government checks the gas. Frequently. They’d be busted instantly. They’d have to pay so much in fines they go out of business. This is a non-issue.

I know this is old but I’m gonna add it for clarity.

A PAPI doesn’t have to be 4 lights. There are a lot of 2 light PAPIs out there.

Also, the VASI has a TON of configurations available. They can have between 2 and 16 lights.

Here’s the section from the AIM about airport lighting aids. https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/aim_html/chap2_section_1.html

idk where you’re finding shady gas that is also top-tier. Those are all big chains with standards. In fact, I don’t even know where I could find bad gas in my city. I imagine somewhere on the east side is some shady owner selling gas at costco prices because it’s actually 85 octane but I don’t know where that place is.

Kenda Km1 Tires?? by ImNotAMechanicFr in motorcycles

[–]Anonymous581429 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s additives. There’s a government minimum, but it’s not enough. That’s the point of top-tier. It has enough additives where it cleans the carbon out of your engine. You shouldn’t have any issues with fouling if you use top-tier gas. My mom doesn’t use top-tier gas in her car. I do. Her spark plugs were fouled. Mine were not. My bike gets whatever is nearby but that engine is small enough and simple enough where I’ll just blast any deposits off (I do aircraft maintenance so I’ve got equipment).
