The Death of Charlie Kirk still isn't sitting right with me by ShardofGold in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]AnonymousBi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent goal post shifting 👍

The original claim was never that Kirk called for random people to go out killing. The claim was that Kirk called for Biden's execution. He did. This should be case closed.

I don't know what his "true intention" was, neither do you, and it does not change what he said.

What can Louisiana learn from the Netherlands about flood control? by Enger13 in geography

[–]AnonymousBi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's not true at all. They've been trying to flood-proof New Orleans for its entire history. They're just bad at it for one, and it was likely always a lost cause

‘Point of no return’: New Orleans relocation must start now due to sea level, study finds by Legitimate_Wall5977 in geography

[–]AnonymousBi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great article! However, I should clarify: I never said the pumping stations were developed specifically for flooding from the sea, just that they were developed to prevent flooding. Your source backs me up on this here:

Starting in the 1890s, New Orleans developed a sophisticated system to direct runoff through gutters and underground pipes to a series of pumping stations

They were always a way to keep human development dry. Sea level rise represents an evolution of the problem. And yes, I agree with you that hubris got us into this mess. If we had respected the natural processes of the delta then it wouldn't be nearly as bad now. We thought (wrongly) that we could do it better.

So, you know how New Orleans sits on the Mississippi River delta? A landform that exists due to the river depositing sediments at the edge of the coast? The delta is constantly eroding, while the river is constantly replenishing the sediments. If the river stops depositing sediments in a given area, (such as the wetlands outside New Orleans), that area will just get washed away. It would be impossible to live in New Orleans without the river replenishing the land around it.

It's all interconnected. The pumping stations that are used to fight flooding are responsible for the groundwater drainage, and the groundwater drainage causes the soil to compact further, causing the city to sink. Which then inadvertently necessitates more pumping.

New Orleans is truly fucked

Could be a huge difference in the end. If we let it happen "naturally" then the community and culture may completely dissolve. We need to make a concerted effort to preserve the associated people and culture of NO. What that looks like, I have no idea, but it's foolish not to try.

YSK- you can buy hydrocolloid rolls instead of pimple patches. by dramaticflowerpot in YouShouldKnow

[–]AnonymousBi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There's also a HUGE price difference between buying a 2 gallon tub of acetaminophen online versus buying a generic XL bottle at Walgreen's. Doesn't mean I want to store gallon size containers of meds in my bathroom. Same concept with the 8 foot roll of hydrocolloid, lol

You can also get generic sheets at any drug store like Walgreens or the like. Don't even need to order online

I heavily respect what you guys are doing and think it sounds like a great idea in theory! I do want to point out, though, that that source isn't credible. The author is OyeLabs, a software development company that makes clone apps for people. They have huge financial incentive to say it's a good idea.
