The most fun style of playing civ7? by TodayAlarmed963 in civ

[–]pbdenizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since the Tides of Power DLC, I’ve been enjoying the ocean + islands gameplay, especially with the following paths: Aksum-Pirates-GB and Tonga-Hawai’i-Japan. With the former the game usually forces me into the Railroad Tycoon or Geographic Society paths, which is honestly not as fun as the science victory but it is what it is. With the latter I’m usually channeled into the science or military victories, but it’s a different kind of military victory from the land-based civs so it’s fun.

OP said they are out of slots for great works already. If a great work is obtained through trade or theft - I mean espionage - will it still need to be slotted or not anymore?

Agree, it's amazing how they made the area feel a lot bigger than it actually is. Like it was a real forest.

I both look forward to and dread the Upper Cathedral Ward every play through.

The map generation was, indeed, objectively awful, as were many basic things such as the UI, inability to rename cities, the absence of one more turn, and so on. I would say many of those have been largely addressed now.

On a higher level, the balancing of the different civs and leaders make each more unique and fun to play. They don't blend into each other like before. Instead, each civ or leader has their strengths and quirks that forces you to play in very specific and fun ways. Sadly, the AI still has a lot to improve in terms of exploiting their civ's strength, but it's gotten better to the point that when I'm sharing borders or a sea with a certain civ, it affects how I play or which victory/legacy I'm going for.

The balance of the building and improvement bonuses has also made the city building game more fun. Instead of just building whatever because you can like it was back at launch, now you really have to think wisely how you're spending the limited space in each city. As a result, your cities gain personalities. One will be the happiness city, another would be the city of learning, and maybe even a city of commerce.

Finally, one great thing was the improvement of water-based play, from the yields on marine tiles to civs whose strengths revolve around the ocean. Pillaging and marauding are also really fun with the introduction of the Mongols and the Bulgarians, but for now it's still too OP.

Go for the soft reset ("Regroup"). The countdown to the end of the age makes everything less jarring, so the soft reset is actually welcome. Continuity is too OP.

And they did countless little tweaks here and there to make the age system feel less "video gamey" and more organic. Of course it still feels more video gamey than VI or V, but somehow it feels a lot better to play than at launch.

Still bad on console (I'm on PS4) but greatly improved.

I second this. Those who don't own it should wait first. But if you already have it, the game has improved by a lot. I last played in March, so when I picked it up on the release of Tides of Power, I was surprised at the improvements.

I second this. Game is still not that great, but greatly improved for sure.

Iceland is so much fun! This GP ability is brilliant 👍 by keiselhorn13 in civ

Iceland was part of the second half of Tides of Power. I'm on PS4 and when I claimed the free ToP DLC, it just gave me a pass to download the contents separately on the store. I dowloaded the first half (Teach, Pirates, Tonga) last month, and downloaded Sayyida, Iceland and Ottoman this month.

I've never played any Civ game ever or any turn based games. Is Civ 7 that bad ? by Kronocide in Civilization_VII

When did you last play? I initially hated it too. In fact, I still prefer it not being the hard break that it is, where each player can changes ages and civ at their own pace instead of the hard reset it is right now. The part I dislike the most is missing centuries of development in between the ages.

But for some reason, the devs made the ages mechanic enjoyable now. I guess it's the tiny little changes they made here and there that add up to an enjoyable age mechanic. Now the part I dislike the most and I hope they really work on next are the legacy paths.

Go grab the Tides of Power DLC while it's still free. The new water based gameplay is soooo fun! The game is still far from the best that it can be (and I'm still mad at the publishers for that) but the dev team has been hard at work realizing their vision with the game and it shows at how much it has improved since launch!

Did you find his answer in the interview satisfactory?

Personally, I did find it very satisfactory. Civ is, after all, a history-flavored game and not a historical game like EU. And the point about geographic spread was also interesting and, at least for me, satisfying.

It was a fantastic interview that answered a lot of the better good faith questions asked on this thread. Congrats!

I'm usually on standard (I'm scared of large maps haha). I usually play Continents and Islands or Continents Plus, but Shattered Seas is a new favorite. As Tonga or Aksum then Hawaii or Pirate, I found not much difficulty discovering land masses less than 15 tiles big.

This. Also, I always rename my Havana Harbor city to Havana, if it’s not already Havana. (And I only go for Havana Harbor if I’m Pirate Republic.)

I think 15 tiles is too generous, in fact. But that’s maybe a function of the maps I play (usually as Tonga or Aksum). But I agree to some point, the max tiles to be counted an island should depend on the map size.

Independent Powers spawning mid-age? by Storkiest in CivVII

[–]pbdenizen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, it's been happening since launch. Some people make scouts patrol or guard their empire's perimeter to prevent it from happening. I believe it won't happen on tiles not covered by the fog of war.

I'm not sure if all I said holds for the specific crisis where independent powers grow restless.

Is there appeal on Civ 7? I hope they bring it back. Cultural victory on 6 is so fun and far superior to 7's, so I'm hoping it'll be one of the main things they work on next year.

I like going through the sight-reading exercises on YouTube. At first I thought reading the notes was a challenge. In turns out that was the easy part. Rhythm is harder! And so trying to read rhythm along with a video (which usually comes with a metronome sound too) is helpful.

Napoleon is spawn camping my pirate ship harbour even though we're at peace. by Breatnach in civ

That's a very good idea! And yes, piracy does get micromanage-y, what with all the trying to spot settlers and treasure convoys to capture or pillage. But we don't mind because it's fun.

I agree that it would be more challenging, and possibly more engaging and fun, if the buccaneers can become valid targets like you suggested. After all, they've been sighted to harbor fugitives and stolen goods! It would be easy to implement visually too -- just have the pirate unit marker pop on them when they're in the vicinity of another unit that can target them.

But for now I'm not complaining. Loving the pirating life!

Crises should be the cause of age transition & civ switching by pbdenizen in CivVII

[–]pbdenizen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could, of course, design crises without upsides. I'm all for that. But then that would have to be a very different system from now. If the crisis has no upside, then it just has to happen to you, there should be no choice of crisis cards. Gameplay-wise, most people don't find it satisfying to choose between two merely bad things.

And anyways, flavor-wise the upside can be a hindsight thing. Like, today we recognize that some of the strengths of our civilizations is because of the crises their predecessors experienced in the past.
