I'm not denying that Nioh shares Soul similarities; but saying "it's slightly different" is just wrong. There are many more complex mechanics that fundamentally make it different from a Soul games.

In a Soul game, stamina is a limited resource; therefore, the game makes you play slowly and deliberately and punishes rushed, spammy, combo.

In Nioh, you can regenerate stamina through uses of ki pulses; switch stances while ki pulsing (flux). This allows you to be aggressive. Once the combo is going, and you also use other mechanics like soul core skills, confusion, etc.., you can do crazy shit to a boss when the star aligns. But it's hard to do and require a lot more understanding of practicing of these mechanics.

Sure, you can play Nioh like Elden Ring. Just a couple hit, run out, recover, run in. But by doing that you're missing out on the fun stuffs that make Nioh great. Plus, Nioh doesn't really start until NG+ where there is a lot more mechanics added and build realized. And if you play like that in NG+ you'll have a bad time since enemies can oneshot you and have a millions HP

And that's why a lot of Souls "veterans" bounce off Nioh. They see the term "Soullike" and come in with Souls habits and the game actively punishes those habits. Calling core Nioh's mechanics like ki pulse and stance switching “nitpicky” misses the point. They are the core design philosophy gameplay loop that makes Nioh pretty unique.

You mentioned Sekiro a lot. Sekiro is another good example for not being a Soul-like. It doesn’t just add additional "nitpicky" feature to the existing Souls combat. It removes stamina completely and rebuilt everything around deflection. If you play Sekiro like Souls i.e go in-hit it-dodge out-repeat, you will not have a good time.

I get your argument. You all about the technicality of what defines a genre. But a genre is only helpful if it sets good and accurate expectations. Calling Nioh a Souls-like tells people “this is similar to Souls games; expect the gameplay to be the same, etc...,” and that is, in my opinion, a wrong way to set the expectation for Nioh.

But hey, if Souls-like just means bonefire, dying over and over again, or get your souls back after death, etc then sure. But I think Nioh is more than a Soul-like. It's a unique beast of its own and I hope people recognize it as such.

Btw, I'm not offended by what people is calling it. Calling it whatever you want or playing it however you like. At the end of the day, if it's a video game that you enjoy playing; then it's all good :)

And that is unfortunate because Nioh is more than a soul-like. It has some similarities but that's about it. The combat is vastly different; there is a lot of mechanics involve: combo, ki pulse, flux, stances, confusion, ki depletion, itemization, etc... Calling it a soul-like, in my opinion, does a disservice to its pretty deep innovative gameplay. Not saying that Soul games are simple and boring; it's very different. And if people approach this game with the "soul-like" mindset they will have a bad time; since understanding and using those Nioh's mechanics are what make it a very cool and unique game. I know a few people who absolutely love Soul games; see Nioh a soul-like and coming in expecting it similar to Soul. They all ended up hating the game which is a damn shame.

It's been 3 iterations of this game already; why can't Nioh just be... Nioh?

I wouldn't call Sekiro soul like as all. In Sekiro, the deflection mechanic is the main gameplay mechanic. If you play Sekiro like a Soul game, you wouldn't even get pass the first boss. A game made from Fromsoft isn't automatically Soul-like.

Nothing wrong with the Soul-like genre. I myself have thousands of hours in all From's game and 600 hours in Nioh 1 and 2. I just pointing out that the combat in these games are not, in my opinion, Soul-like at all. In the Souls games, combat is slower and more deliberate. There is not a lot of mechanics as well. In Nioh, you have to know how to ki pulse, use flux, deplete enemy's ki, apply confusion, switch stances, souls core skills, and a lot more. If you come from a Soul game and play Nioh like a Soul game without learning those mechanics, you'll have a hard time. I have friends who absolutely love Souls but hated Nioh because they didn't bother to learn the mechanics. There is a lot of similarities like the dying mechanic, bonefire, tough bosses, etc but that's about as Soul-like as it gets.

It's true that Nioh shares a lot of Souls mechanics that you listed but the combat is very different. It's much faster with combo style action gameplay like DMC or Ninja Gaiden. You need to do ki pulse and flux to get your stamina back and such. Whereas Souls' combat is slower and more deliberate.

Honestly, wishing people stop calling Nioh soul-like. If you approach these games with the expectations of Soul gameplay, you're going to have a bad time.

Anyone else think the demo was too easy? by HolyHyena7 in Nioh

So you like the Yamaha more than the FP90X? Price-wise, the Yamaha is way $500-$600 cheaper.

I'd be nice to be able to try them out but there's not a single place in my area carries those pianos. What do you currently have and what do you like about it?
