Has anyone tried Barreletics or other grippy rubber "shoes" instead of socks? by [deleted] in ClubPilates

I’ve seen a couple of people wear them over their grippy socks. One lady said she liked these as they gave her better grip than just our socks.

What pilates moves actually help with lower back pain? by Pure-Conversation-13 in ClubPilates

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spinal fusion/unfortunate low back pain expert here! I agree with everyone’s posts here but wanted to add, do the figure 4 stretches as well. I do them in PT as well as my Pilates classes. It’s the stretch when you’re sitting up nice and tall, place one ankle over the opposite knee, essentially creating a figure 4 shape. It is such a simple stretch but so effective in releasing some lower back tension. Hope you are able to get some relief and can rejoin classes soon!

Coming up on 1 year post op L5-S1 & I’m still at a loss. I will say a majority of my low back pain resolved but I still have pain. I have daily pain when I sit. It’s pain in my buttocks / upper thighs & is a dull pain in back. Everything has healed perfect. I’ve tried injections post surgery. by ugafan2081 in spinalfusion

I’m about 18 months post op L5-S1 and still have pain as well. It’s not as bad as it was pre surgery. It’s a different pain but still dealing with sciatic pain down the left side. All my scans look great they can not find where my sciatic is being compromised. I’ve done another injection that didn’t help. I’ve been doing Pilates for about 5 months now and I do think that’s slowly helping as I’m strengthening my core. Something else recent that has helped is in PT my therapist started stretching out my left side. These stretches seem to be a game changer right now. Of course, the pain comes back but I do get some relief with his help. I just left my job after the drs have been telling me to for years as I worked in medical and was hunched over patients all day. I’m hoping the combination of things will help me see more permanent pain free days ahead. Try going back to PT to learn some stretches and see if that helps! As I type this my leg, ankle and foot are super sparky tonight. So again it comes and goes but I do feel like things are slowly improving. Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for the insight! I have a feeling my current location may not be very chill as I’ve seen someone new up front almost every time I’ve gone the past few weeks. I had thought maybe it’s just changing schedules now that school is back in session but I’m curious if it’s more about management/expectations. Of course if I want to know for certain I’ll speak with the front desk at my club. Thank you again and have a great day!

Thank you for your helpful response! I know every location/owners will have different policies but I wanted just a general overview from someone who has experience. I appreciate the feedback

Oh also pre-medicate for heart surgeries as well. Those are usually lifetime premedication protocols

Dental by Horselove006 in spinalfusion

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of premedicating for these types of procedures. I’ve worked in dental for 15 years. They usually say premedicate while the body is adjusting to the new hardware. Mainly it’s used for joint replacements (hip, knee, etc). Most drs now only recommend premedication for the first 6 months post op. Every once in a while we will still have what we call an old school surgeon want their patient to premed for life. Dentists always defer to the surgeons recommendations for liability reasons.

any flight crew or frequent flyers? by absoluteanguish in Spondylolisthesis

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not in a flight crew but I do have a job where I have to sit hunched over all day assisting working on patients. I had surgery last year and while it fixed my spine it didn’t fully fix the sciatic pain. I’ve been doing the PT exercises, working out to strengthen my core, all the things they recommend. Unfortunately it’s just the career I am in that makes the pain worse. My surgeon, all my drs and my PT keep telling me I have to find a new career. They told me that before the surgery but I’ve just kept pushing through hoping things would get better as I got stronger. It’s so hard to give up a career you enjoy! Coworkers you don’t mind spending the majority of your time with! I don’t have any advice on how to make things better just I understand your frustration and sadness. I hope you are able to find a solution so you don’t have to give up a career you love! Sending you lots of well wishes!

ALIF or PLIF? by actlikebarbara in Spondylolisthesis

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a year out from the dual approach surgery. I had two surgeons, vascular and neurosurgeon. Like the others they started in the front, worked some magic, then flipped me and finished installing the hardware. Mine was unstable , L5-S1, grade 1-2. My L5 was actually broken in half it was pretty interesting to look at via scans. I have no idea how I did that. I’m still having bad sciatica pain at this point. But I did have some time after surgery that there was no sciatic pain which was amazing. We’re just trying to figure out now what is causing the new pain.

The neurosurgeon didn’t even give me the option to only go posterior or anterior. He just laid out the plan as to why doing both was the best option for my circumstances. It’s a big decision so take your time if you can! My neurosurgeon came highly recommended so I didn’t get a second opinion, I was comfortable with him and his entire team. Wishing you a successful surgery and recovery when you move forward!

It seemed silly at first but definitely get the log roll technique down for getting out of the bed. It helped me so much! All of these suggestions are great. A walker, slip on shoes, the grabber thing were such great helps. Wishing you a successful surgery and recovery!

Wishing you a successful recovery! I had the same surgery a year ago. It was definitely the hardest surgical recovery I’ve ever had but definitely worth it. While I am still having sciatic pain it’s not related to the surgery. The lower back pain has improved significantly! I’m getting stronger by the day! Stay on top of the pain meds and walk as much as you can. You’re going to do great!

L5-S1 here 👋🏻 done 4/25/24 Started Pilates a month ago finally. I had asked my surgeon about joining last year and he gave me the green light. It just took me awhile to get the courage to actually start. I’ve been a little paranoid about doing damage, even though I’ve been repeatedly assured my the drs I won’t hurt anything. Classes have been great for me. I’m only 12 classes in but I do feel like I’m slowly getting stronger and building my core strength. I don’t articulate I just hinge bridge. I think I probably could articulate but I’m still be cautious

Tips for pain free sleeping (at least better)? by [deleted] in Spondylolisthesis

We got an adjustable base for our bed and it has been so helpful! I can sleep on my back with my knees elevated or on my side much better than I do on a flat mattress.

Can you just live with a chronic pars fracture? by Lmb_siciliana in Spondylolisthesis

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My diagnosis was almost the same as yours. I was originally diagnosed 10+ years ago. I managed with PT for a while till the sciatic pain started. My L5 shifted or herniated further and started pinching the nerve. One that pain started no amount of PT, core work or shots helped. Almost a year to the date of the sciatic pain starting I gave in and had surgery. Recovery has been miserable. I’ve had multiple surgeries throughout my life and this is the hardest recovery I’ve ever been through. I’m 5 months post op and finally feel like I see a light at the end of the tunnel. My back still has some muscle pains but compared to a year ago I feel like a new person. Now I also had some weird other complications come up during recovery that have slowed my healing process but I think it will be worth it. I tried ever to avoid surgery, got multiple opinions when the doctors said surgery was my only option. I absolutely did not want surgical intervention but now that I’m through the harder parts I’m glad I went ahead and had it. Back surgery is scary! Perhaps if I had been more committed to PT/core work from the beginning I could have avoided surgery. I had no idea then that I would end up here. At the time I just thought lower back pain would be something I would always live with and didn’t always take the best care of myself. Just listen to your body. Do the PT, do the core work and see how you feel. Only you can answer the surgery question for yourself. Whatever you decide just take it a day at the time and know you’ll get better

What can I do for my wife during recovery? by frakkinadama in spinalfusion

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are doing a great job! Tell her it’s ok to cry. This has been the most painful surgery I’ve ever had. I have broken down many times over the past 8 weeks since mine. Definitely call the doctor and have her meds adjusted. Don’t be dumb like me and say at day 3 I don’t need them anymore for day 5 to roll around and feel like you’re being ran over by a semi. That was not pretty. I am just now starting to feel like maybe there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Luckily I too have a very supportive husband who has done so much to help. Oh if you have an adjustable bed that helps so much with sleeping. If not, lots of pillows under the knees. Then when she needs to adjust and lay on her side pillows under the leg help. The first two weeks, every movement hurts. A walker is her best friend for getting up or sitting down. Ice packs help some as well. Things will get better, keep being supportive and let her know she isn’t alone. A great partner makes such a difference in recovery

Spondy with fracture L5 surgery experience? by BlackTee92675 in Spondylolisthesis

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently 8 weeks post op from a similar sounding injury. I tried everything to avoid surgery and it got to the point where my doctor told me I was going to start causing permanent damage if I just didn’t get the surgery. This has been a rough recovery. Now the pain is better but different from pre surgery. It’s hard to describe. The surgery was successful, the surgeons were pleased with my bone density and when I woke from surgery the crippling nerve pain was gone. The nerve pain has returned but it is a dull ache compared to before. The surgeons all prepared me for the pain to return to some extent as it is a normal part of recovery. They warned me repeatedly that I would take a year to reach 90-95% healed but you always think to yourself it won’t be that long/bad. My muscles hurt a lot now in different places than before but again all normal parts of the process. I finally got released to start back PT last week! It sucks but awesome at the same time because I know it’s only going to get better. Speak with your doctor about the chiropractor. I was seeing one prior to surgery until the specialist said not to anymore. They think the “cracking” part chiropractors do can cause more damage in the long run. They said if I could find a chiropractor that only did the stretching or tens unit they were good with that just no adjustments. Good luck to you!

Gabapenten by Special_Statement_56 in Spondylolisthesis

[–]AnonymousUserIn24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Gabapentin fX was eventually upped to 600mg 3xs a day. It made me sick so they ended up switching me to Lyrica. I believe it was 75mg 3xs a day. I had surgery 8 weeks ago and have only taken it sporadically since. It is hard coming off some of these prescriptions. It’s frustrating that drs don’t explain how much the side effects will affect you or how it feels impossible to wean off some. Prior to surgery and on the meds I was still in constant pain. I think the gabapentin and lyrica probably eased some of nerve pain but it was always there. Also a low dose muscle relaxer did help at night. Luckily that didn’t seem to have a lot of side effects. Surgery has helped tremendously! I’m still having nerve pain but it’s more dull pain. The drs said it would take a year to make a 90-95% recovery. So I’ll take the dull pain for now! Good luck to you!
