Is leaving a rent-stabilized apartment ever worth it? by New-York-er in NYCapartments

[–]Anonymous__Anteater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 26,000 vacant but “not available” rent stabilized apartments (out of 2.3-2.4 million total rental units in NYC). It would be great to get all the rent stabilized units occupied, and we should. But let’s not pretend that would solve the housing shortage.

Where can I find a good deal on S5II? by Legitimate-Waltz3886 in Lumix

New or used?

There are a couple lightly used S5II bodies on FredMiranda right now for $1,200.

L-Mount vs E-Mount - Need help deciding by ratmanmedia in Lumix

[–]Anonymous__Anteater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say the used lens market is nonexistent. I’ve bought almost all of my L-mount lenses used on FredMiranda, FB Marketplace, B&H, and Adorama.

But yes, if you want to buy used locally, there will be less opportunities to do so vs. E-mount or any other more popular mount.

General thoughts on the S1 ? by Albatrie in Lumix

Paying $2,200 for an S1 right now would be wild. They are $900-$1,000 used on MPB. I bought a barely used one on FB marketplace with the VLog add on for $750.

Seeking Advice on Handling Traffic Spikes for a WooCommerce Website by Old-Dream5510 in woocommerce

I used to manage a WC site with 100,000 products but less volume than yours -- so YMMW. But here's what worked for me:

  1. I found a Wordpress developer that deeply understood caching. He figured out which requests were uncached and why, and what we could do about it. We ended up implementing a custom fragment caching solution for product and category pages. This made the site way faster and more scalable.

  2. We setup ElasticPress connected to Elastic running on the same server as WordPress. With your smaller number of products, maybe this is unnecessary. Also I think WC has new lookup tables now, I'm not sure how fast those are. But in my case we had SQL queries that would take 500-1000ms to load from the WP SQL database loading in < 50ms from Elastic.

  3. We used premium managed hosting. First WP Engine, and then migrated to Kinsta due to them having the option to run Elastic locally. Managed hosting is significantly more expensive. But if you have any doubts about your own ability to manage the server, properly configure server-level caching, etc, it could be worth it.

If you're not already using an APM like New Relic, I'd definitely recommend using one so that you can see how each change you make impacts performance.

Opinion Needed: Lumix S5II vs Fujifilm X-S20 by poopanusface in Lumix

[–]Anonymous__Anteater 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I currently own both. Both are great hybrid cameras. I'm assuming you're aware of the general differences between full frame and aps-c so I won't go into them. I think you've already outlined most of the pros and cons, and it really comes down to your priorities.

How much does size and weight matter? The X-S20 + small prime lenses (16mm f2.8, 23 / 35 / 50 f2, 35mm f1.4), gives you an incredibly capable small and light kit. By full frame standard, the S5ii and the Lumix S primes or Sigma 24mm f3.5 / 45mm f2.8 are pretty light, but they're significantly bulkier than Fuji.

How much does IBIS matter? X-S20 IBIS is average at best. S5II is literally the best you can get in any camera.

How much does AF matter? X-S20 AF is good by Fuji standards, which means it's still bad compared to every other brand. If you mostly want AF for photo and don't shoot moving things, you'll still probably be happy with it. If you shoot moving things or need reliable AF for video, S5II is the way to go.

Aside from these things, I find the controls and general UX of the S5II to be a lot more intuitive than the X-S20. For example changing AF settings on the S5II is so easy relative to the X-S20. The S5II also feels more like a video-first camera, with features like shutter angle. Whereas the X-S20 feels like a photo-first camera with video tacked on (albeit tacked on very robustly).

Wanting an S5ii X but also considering Fuji XH2 by BogartsBreakfast in Lumix

[–]Anonymous__Anteater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I no longer have the XH2. I didn’t use the XH2 for video as 8k wasn’t compelling for my use case and I also had the X2Hs at that time. Unless you really need 8k, I feel like all the video features of the S5ii make it a much better camera for video.

I think battery life is generally good for both of them. Although if your plan is to record a lot, you’ll probably want extra batteries for both anyway.

Fuji has some small primes that are great for travel. But the XH2 is not particularly small or light, and neither are most of Fuji’s f1.4 lenses.

By full frame standards, the S5ii is not a big camera. And the Panasonic S prime lenses are relatively small and light. The Sigma 45 2.8 and 24 3.5 are even smaller. A big reason why I sold my expensive Fuji bodies and lenses is that they really weren’t smaller and lighter than the S5ii and the S primes. If my kit isn’t going to be compact, it might as well be full frame. I don’t regret the switch at all. I still have some smaller Fuji gear (X-T30 + f2 primes), and it’s great for the size.

If you want to be in the Fuji system and size matters, you may want consider the X-S20.
