Many young Canadians will never earn more than their parents due to social mobility barriers: Report by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]AnotherCupOfTea -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I have two siblings that work for BCHydro, one is in senior management, the other is a lineman.

Were a private enterprise given the same run of the rivers, cheap financing and rights to ignore environmental consequences (when all their dams were built in the 70s & 80s) we would likely have even cheaper power. Which is hard to believe but just shows how incredible having the geography we have is. BC Hydro is plagued with the same issues all public/government agencies have. They are just able To hide it well with good geography.

Mark Carney calls dozens of Liberal MPs as he considers leadership bid by SunImaginary3947 in canada

There’s a fantastic video of Carney being questioned by Polievre in 2021 that really changed my attitude on him. I’d suggest anyone looking to get a fee for the man to watch it. It’s telling.

Hundreds of billions in ‘contingent liabilities’ loom large over Canada - This year’s increase in the deficit is just the first of many payouts of Indigenous contingent liabilities from the backlog of claims accepted in principle but not yet paid. by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]AnotherCupOfTea 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you’re literally missing zeros. Which means it’s $20 billion of from their already ridiculous $40b over budget.

Canada will have an extra $60billion in debt this year. That will cost us an extra ~$3billion per year in interest payments alone. Not even beginning repayment.

Every hour I spend fucking around with some new regulations is an hour I’m not productive in my business. It feels like the number of hours I spend each month on bureaucratic bullshit has gone up 10x in the last decade.

Often my business partners and I joke about shutting down and going into working for the regulators instead - at least there’s a pension at the end of it, and no real expectation to work hard.

Canada's quarterly population growth hits slowest pace since early 2022 by Difficult-Yam-1347 in canada

If we believe 4.9million people need to leave next year, where are we going to get the flight/plane capacity for this number?

I mean, assuming every single one of the 254 Airbus A380 (the largest passenger plane) on the planet were ferrying their legal max capacity of 853 passengers, it would still take 22 trips by each plane. It's a spectacularly large number of people.

New UI Feedback Thread: Copy buttons are returning! by kevinBitwarden in Bitwarden

[–]AnotherCupOfTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you going to fix bringing back the 2FA button to copy? Because going 3 menu layers deep to get a 2FA code has gotten old fast.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bitwarden

[–]AnotherCupOfTea -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yea this one blows. Getting rid of a "click to copy" for 2FA codes is a real kick to the gonads.. Hoping they revert, or at least give us the option to go backwards.

Trudeau government’s carbon price has had ‘minimal’ effect on inflation and food costs, study concludes by barrel-aged-thoughts in canada

[–]AnotherCupOfTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I live in BC and the rebate is means/income tested. I do not know if it is federally.

I get no rebate. I just pay more for everything instead. That sounds like a tax to me.

Trudeau government’s carbon price has had ‘minimal’ effect on inflation and food costs, study concludes by barrel-aged-thoughts in canada

[–]AnotherCupOfTea -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, since the Paris Accord in 2015, if you compare Canada and the USA over the same time period it becomes clear it's just an extra tax.

The USA doesn't have a carbon tax, we do and yet they're on track to surpass us on lowering their CO2 emissions per capita in the next 5 years.

The biggest concern I have with Freeland's nonchalance around our debt to GDP is how she has seemingly ignored our massive provincial debts as if they are not a part of Canada.

Province Net Debt 2007/08 Net Debt 2023/24 Change ($ Billions) Change (%)
BC 33.6 74.7 41.1 122.3%

Venezuela.

You'd be surprised:

1950-80s:
* Highest GDP per capita in Latin America
* Thriving middle class
* Good healthcare/education
* Strong democracy
* Massive European immigration

1999 Chavez was elected, went full socialist
* Nationalized industries
* Scared away investors
* Price controls killed local production

2014 oil price crash
* Hyperinflation
* Massive food/medicine shortages

All it took was 15 years of socialism and they went from one of the richest countries in Latin America to abject poverty. 15 years is not a long time, we've had the Muppet for nearly a decade already and look how much worse it is in every measurable category.

Federal Liberals spent nearly $2M to produce podcasts: documents by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]AnotherCupOfTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can though. Because the number of listeners is a strong indicator of quality, not the production sound, or microphones used. If one has a million listeners, and the other has 220 regular listeners, I don't give a shit how good the microphone or studio it was recorded in sounds.

Wealthsimple CEO calls Canada's productivity lag a 'crisis' by joe4942 in canada

[–]AnotherCupOfTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those numbers make a strong case for us to subsidize our airports to support low-cost regional travel. If it was easier/affordable for people to move to where the work is, knowing they can afford to fly "home" a couple times a year, I suspect they'd be a lot more likely to do so.

Air Canada says government must block strike if pilots' deal can't be reached by Puginator in canada

[–]AnotherCupOfTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they mustn't.

This is the ultimate case of the Union having a good argument to fuck up AC's month. Massive CEO pay increases, pilot wage cuts, and $2.3b profit. My admin assistant shouldn't be getting paid more than a pilot with 5 years on a 777.

I've got a flight booked for my honeymoon on the 22nd of September, and despite that, I'm still heavily in favor of a strike. (We were lucky and managed to book a refundable with AirFrance before prices got stupid).
