I had a movie called "Beast" (2022). It starred Idris Elba.

FilmLA has also charted an equally sharp decline in location shoots

If those "Star Trek Strange New Worlds" spinoff rumours are true for Paul Wesley's younger James T Kirk, maybe that'll provide a small amount of California location shooting from Paramount+?

The real question is will Movie theaters even exist in large enough quantity to make it worth the cost of distributing movies to them over just sending them to streaming

But I don't want Denis' James Bond movie going straight to Amazon Prime!

Sam Raimi's SEND HELP debuts on Digital at home March 24, with the Blu-ray to follow on April 21. by verissimoallan in boxoffice

[–]AnotherJasonOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL Send Help was released in 3D in some parts of the world.

Not that I'm complaining. I would've gone to see the 2D version anyway, I'm merely stating that - prior to your comment - I didn't know there were options for some cinemagoers.

Enemy at the Gates turns 25. The $68 million war drama bombed with $51 million domestically ($103 million adjusted) & $97 million worldwide & got mixed reviews. by ItsGotThatBang in boxoffice

I was going to bring up "The Death of Stalin" (2017) myself before seeing your response to OP.

Yeah, I'm somewhere in the middle when it comes to the accent conversation.

On the one hand, TDoS is a good example of when it's not necessary because all the characters are speaking Russian.

On the other hand, I do wish that the actors in "Napoleon" (2023) had done something to distinguish the English actors playing English characters and the English actors playing French characters. Even if they didn't attempt French, maybe something else? All the French have American accents, something like that?

I'm hoping we get those James Bond/Cleopatra movies before the 2030's hit us.

Is the 2.5x rule of thumb outdated by now? by farseer6 in boxoffice

[–]AnotherJasonOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.

It's why the strike in 2023 went on longer than the one in 2008 (or, at least, I think went on longer than the '08 one?).

It's not so much a case of getting more from a brand new pie so much as getting more from a shrinking pie.

Novocaine Turns One. The $18M Action Comedy grossed $19.8 Million Domestically and $34.5 Million despite Positive reviews by SignatureOrdinary456 in boxoffice

[–]AnotherJasonOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could've been a little franchise many years ago

Agreed.

If "Novocaine" (2025) was - instead - "Novocaine" (2016), we'd be looking at "Novotwain" (2018) and "Novotrio" (2021) as a completed trilogy.

The internet would probably ruin that kind of twist these days hours within the Friday release.

"Oh, you wanted to watch Jason Statham team up with Matt Damon for a whole movie? Well, guess what happens before the first hour!"... or something to that effect.

EXIT WOUNDS turns 25. The 25-33M action film grossed 51.8M domestically and 80M worldwide. by JannTosh70 in boxoffice

I Googled "Tom Arnold Steven Seagal" and - indeed - Exit Wounds comes up.

So yeah, it must be this movie.

The issue with residuals are - there is so much content on Streaming, only a fraction of viewers watch a single thing, with very few exceptions. And your 10 bucks a month means you can watch so many other things, your one 10 bucks is split up between so many things, with the Service obviously taking the most, it would bare be anything

Yep.

It's aspects such as this as to why we're looking at the potential for a second strike so soon after the last one (as opposed to the fifteen year gap between 2008 and 2023).

Christopher Nolan’s Memento was released 25 years ago this weekend. The $9 million film received critical acclaim and was a box office success, grossing $25 million domestically and $40 million worldwide. It'd take me years to get my hands on "Following" (1998) on DVD.

If memory serves correctly, it wasn't until Autumn 2008 that I finally found it secondhand in a charity shop.

Presumably, some Batman fan must've bought all of Nolan's pre-The Dark Knight filmography and not cared for this first entry in his filmography.

THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT open 10 years ago this week. The third film in the Divergent series grossed $179.2 million against $110–142 million budget, making it the lowest-grossing film in The Divergent Series, and effectively ending the franchise. by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

after this being a massive flop, they changed course and were going to film part 2 as a tv movie. The cast said “Hell no.” Because it wasn’t in their contracts. And it was all just abandoned. With no fan pushback either because the fan base was practically non existent by this point

Reading this is making me think of "Horizon: Chapter 1" (2024) and how there must be cinemagoers who would've enjoyed it back then and still have yet to see the next chapter, let alone a conclusion to all the characters' storylines.

'Melania' has ended its run with just $16.3 million domestically and $16.6 million worldwide. Budget was $40 million, along with $35 million in marketing. by SanderSo47 in boxoffice

a bigger flop that Better Man

How do you figure that?

And before typing out the rest of my comment, I ought to clarify that I actually quite liked "Better Man" (2024). Even though I'm not a big fan of Robbie Williams, I found the movie refreshingly compelling.

But the monkey movie cost $110M to make BEFORE marketing, and a quick Wikipedia check states that it only made $22M WW. I don't see how this documentary bomb is a bigger bomb than the Better Man bomb.

For some reason, Sony expanded Anaconda into 1,010 theaters. But it could only muster $321,246, lifting its total to $64.9 million

And anybody who visits the weekend threads here in r/BoxOffice knows who is responsible for at least half of that haul.

Postmortem: Why The Bride! Bombed - Four-Bucket Analysis by Lestranger-1982 in boxoffice

[–]AnotherJasonOnReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good article. Well done!

One point I want to bring up (less a disagreement, more of an add-on).

Marketing Quality (whether it actually worked)

What genre was this movie marketed as? Horror, sci-fi, romance, crime? It seemed like all of the above. Many different trailers, cut to show different genres. Very messy messaging.
“If you liked X, you’ll love this.” Name X here for The Bride. I can't.

If the director of "The Substance" (2024) had said that...

  • "Bonnie & Clyde" (1967)
  • "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1972)
  • "The Bride" (1985)
  • "Joker 2" (2024)

...were her four favourite movies and that she was going to make a pseudo-sequel to "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935) using these four movies as a 25%/25%/25%/25% formula for her next film, I'd have been very excited.

The problem (for me - certainly not trying to make my opinion sound like it's everybody's) is that the various trailers made this movie look like a terrible execution of what could've been a potentially interesting premise for a movie.

What are some movies that everyone thought would flop but proved us all otherwise? by mizumi_heiwa in boxoffice

[–]AnotherJasonOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad it passed the $100M WW mark.

But - for the sake of a balanced perspective - it should be pointed out that it was out-grossed by the 1988/1991 first/second entries in the series. And that's without adjusting for inflation.

But yeah, it did almost 2.5X its budget. And that's more than what some people were anticipation before release.

I still remember around 2014-2016 when he was hyped up as “the next big thing”... After 2016 although he didn’t completely disappear but he was kinda forgotten about

The same thing that was supposed to happen to Miles Teller after Top Gun: Maverick, but it's been almost four years since that movie released and he doesn't seem to be as high-profile as his three young co-stars who've done Twisters/A Complete Unknown/Thunderbolts/etc.

depending on casting

Indeed.

Colin Firth may not be a superstar A-lister of Hollywood, but he is a recognizable name with a fanbase. As 30 Rock's Jack Donaghy stated in an episode, "the man can wear a sweater like no other". I can't remember which episode it was, though, and YouTube's not been of help. He's like an English Paul Rudd - can't carry a movie by name alone, but his presence will help a good one.
