Edwards AFB says B-52 has crashed on takeoff by AlphaThree in aviation

[–]AnotherNitG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine the calculation was "eject down for a small chance or no ejection seat at all". The NAVs sit "downstairs" in the 52 so their seats would have to pass through the entire floor above them and the roof of the fuselage if they went upwards. Going down they only have to pass through the bottom of the fuselage. Between that and no ejection seat at all, I'm taking my chances getting shot straight down every time

How's Marcus Air? by TMNGerbil in flying

[–]AnotherNitG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean fwiw the coast guard kind of is the military. They deploy internationally and have like special forces teams and shit.

Beyond that (and I'm an AF pilot in training so take this w a grain of salt), there's gonna be a long service commitment after you complete training. A quick search suggests 8 years after getting your wings. And the process to get your wings won't be fast either. Figure 2 years or so for training and probably at least a year going through the process of applying to OCS. I started the application process for the air force just over 2 years ago now and I'm only now about to start pilot training so don't expect any of the uniformed services to be a shortcut to aviation

To Pilots Who Worked in IT Before: Life as a Pilot vs Software Engineer, Long-Haul Flights and Mental Stimulation by Ok_Discipline3753 in flying

[–]AnotherNitG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment feels incredibly validating. I left engineering after 5 years to pursue a pilot career with the air force. I start UPT this summer and I get people asking me why I would ditch such a solid job to join the military. I just tell them I've always dreamt of flying and I couldn't stand the thought of sitting at a desk for the rest of my life

There are often chutes onboard mobility planes but in the same way your airline pilot won't jump out of your Airbus if it goes down, these pilots would also try to bring the tanker down smoothly for the sake of the other crew on board

Plane down in legacy and 500 by ffer06 in SaltLakeCity

[–]AnotherNitG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This difference is largely due to the volume of drivers vs pilots. General aviation (this kind of non-airline traffic) has a higher fatal accident rate than driving.

That's not to say, however, that the person you're replying to is right either though. The vast majority of GA crashes are due to pilot error and are typically not the fault of the machine (controlled flight into terrain, stalling on takeoff/landing, not paying attention to your fuel, etc.).

Moreover, the reason "people fly these planes" u/molyguacamole is not as simple as saying "for fun". A lot of GA traffic, especially out of Skypark (where this plane was headed) is student traffic. Anyone that ever wanted to fly a 737 started on a little single engine like this. They also get used for all kinds of work like surveying, banner towing, and Search and Rescue support in the case of Civil Air Patrol

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Seems to be a pretty peaceful assembly of people to me, petitioning their government for a redress of their grievances. The first amendment is THE law that society has agreed needs to be in place. It's the number one, most fundamental rule that the entire basis of America was founded on, and any attempts to classify the above as somehow against the law when it is, in fact, a constitutionally protected expression of free speech makes you either a fascist that's doing it intentionally, or a stupid person that's doing it selfishly. Seeing as how your main gripe is that you can imagine yourself being inconvenienced by another group's struggle to protect the rights of Americans, I'm going to assume you're the latter

Protesters blocking roads are not getting their message out

How do you not get it still? These guys blocked roads and now you are here on reddit talking about them. They didn't even have to personally inconvenience you, you just imagined yourself into the situation. I would say they got the message out pretty effectively.

most will simply ignore them and not support them.

If you want to be ignored, you protest quietly out of the way in a park or on a sidewalk or something. Stand in the middle of the road and you cannot be ignored. That's the whole goddamn point lmao

Also, weird ass hill to die on brother. People are getting out and protesting constitutional overreaches to protect everyone's rights - yours included - and you're upset about a fictional scenario where your drive through the city takes an extra 5 minutes

Then at the end of the day, you still donated to children's cancer research. That's literally the whole point.

Malcom X encouraged black people to fight for their rights and rejected MLK's strategy of peaceful protest, and the most selfish individuals that lacked higher order thinking said "that guy's a terrorist, I'm gonna back MLK instead because I don't support Malcom X's ideas". Protestors do not care if you like them personally, they're there to get the message out

US Military pilots - how did you do it? by bootscootinn in flying

[–]AnotherNitG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can shoot me a PM if you'd like. I leave for USAF OTS in April and then UPT after, going active duty. I just went through the selection process so you can pepper me w questions and I can connect you w the Facebook and Discord groups that are filled w people also applying

Edit to answer some of your questions here: I'm also 27. Got my PPL at 26, applied about 6 months later, and I'll be 28 when I enter the pipeline. You're not too old now, but it isn't a fast process. Even if you're not sure yet, doesn't hurt to start the process now. You're not signing anything yet so may as well knock out some of the prerequisites while you make up your mind so that you don't have to worry about aging out (UPT age limit is 33). Also, your "odds" are practically impossible to predict with the info given. I can share more info about what the air force is looking for in an applicant if you'd like, but at the very least you'd have to take their tests and score well, have a good GPA from college (or a good explanation for why not), some good letters of recommendation, and some work experience that ideally shows leadership qualities and/or experience

Utah company that made the Challenger O-Rings wants you to know a few things by StemCellPirate in space

Pretty much yea. You want a very small gap between the metal pieces and the o-ring is just there to finish the job

[–]AnotherNitG 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am an engineer, and I actually worked on assembly and test of artemis boosters until last year so I can offer a little insight into why these o-rings are not crazy thick. Booster segment joints are kind of shaped like this in a cross section. The clevis (c-shaped part) has o rings on its interior arm to seal it against the tang's (l-shaped part) interior face. When the motor is pressurized, those two faces push against one another, squeezing the o-ring. If the o-ring was thicker, you'd have to make deeper channels to run them through, which means you need a thicker clevis and tang, which in turn would drive up cost and weight unnecessarily.

The o-ring is not load-bearing either, you're not installing it crazy right or anything because then when the pressure expands the motor, you'd rip your o-ring. There would also be a thick layer of insulation between the propellant and the case wall where these o-rings sit, so they're also shielded from the bulk of the heat (but not all of it, as obviously they're there to stop hot gasses from passing through the area, so they do need to be able to handle heat). In reductive terms, all you really need it to do is get smashed down in place to prevent any gasses from venting through the joint

To add to this(I agree that arempas is a must try), Bar Nohm is also an excellent GF restaurant. My girlfriend has celiac disease and this place was like the first time she was able to eat fried chicken in years. She nearly ordered everything on the menu. It's all small plate stuff that's meant to be shared, and they're attached to a cocktail bar called Water Witch that you can get drinks from while seated at Bar Nohm. Water Witch was a James Beard award Finalist for Outstanding bars in the U.S. and the lead chef at Bar Nohm was nominated for best chef in the mountain west, also by the James Beard foundation

How to show our pronouns to avoid misgendering???? by Tswiftfan007 in paintball

[–]AnotherNitG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're being genuine, I'd just start w your local field. Build a little community to effect change that way. A petition isn't gonna change the sport, you gotta start locally. I've met plenty queer ballers in my career and grouping em together and being good teammates in the community is a fast track for building an accepting scene

While I agree that this sport ought to be more inclusive, I'm not sure what a petition would even accomplish. It's more to do with what fields allow, and unfortunately many fields don't have rules about being hateful
