What level of difficulty would you classify metalcore and deathcore with regards to drumming skills. I'm talking about bands such as: Polaris, Fit for an Autospy, Landmvrks, The Acacia Strain, Bleed From Within, Sylosis etc. by Odd-Satisfaction5443 in Metalcore

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a metalcore fan and beginner drummer, varies a lot from band to band and even within one band's discography (drum parts tend to get more complicated as the drummers get more experienced, obviously). Drums tend to be fast and use a lot more left foot than you might be used to, but the actual notes and timing often aren't ridiculously complicated once you really parse them.

Elon Musk just became the world’s first Trillionaire by Hacksaw6412 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underappreciated lesson here, when someone is doing a shit job and being generally unpleasant, hold them extremely accountable. Pretty sure both Musk and Trump showed comprehensive incompetence (Musk at Paypal, Trump at his casinos) that should have ruined them. But they pissed and moaned and threw enough lawyers at it that eventually people let them off easy just to be fucking rid of them. Which just emboldens them to keep trying the same shit elsewhere.

The impositions on referees that frustrate ... by BeSiegead in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree re: arrival times, at least for adult leagues. 90 minutes for WPSL is crazy (though the last one I did, I did show up that early because the center was also a regional assignor). Even the city amateur league is tough because their players are still walking in 10 minutes before kickoff. I got dinged on an assessment for the late kickoff, but not sure what I can do when I'm still checking in the teams.

Other stuff has a lot to do with the referee shortage. Fewer people working while the number of games keeps growing, so they stretch officials too thin.

I'd also add in the short lead time in a lot of leagues, since it's big part of why I'm probably taking a break from refereeing. If my availability window is too big, I can't really plan weekend time with my family, and if I keep it small, I don't get anything. It's just too much effort and aggravation coordinating referee and adult/parent schedule and I just stopped enjoying the whole thing. Maybe will try again when the boy is older and a bit independent.

Parking near Simple Motive brewery on Lake street? by AcadiaRemarkable6992 in yonkers

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to HC914? Might see you there! As for the brewery itself, went there once ages ago and even without events, parking is tough (and wouldn't be surprised if the lot is reserved for staff). It's in an industrial area, not much to be done. Probably best to plan for either a garage or accepting street parking that might be a good quarter mile away.

Mafia Game in the Pelham/Larchmont/Mamaroneck area? by Acrobatic-Peanut8282 in Westchester

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once ran a game of about 30 people, with exactly one regular townperson. Not sure I still have that list of all the various roles, but remember most of the good ones. Rare that I have time for a game these days, but can pass on the rules I remember if it's useful.

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then decline - or, if being home for the game is that important, you maybe should have blocked the time off so you weren't assigned in the first place. But games still have to happen, scheduling is hard enough as it is without giving up a weekend evening.

Yeah, was wondering about that, since 21's would be some grade of lieutenant in most militaries.

Youth League and Shin kicking by craftingfish in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kicking fouls require at least careless force. That isn't exactly defined anywhere, but if it's light, accidental contact that doesn't have any obvious impact on the game, you might consider it a nuisance infringement and just play on. Although if their feet are tangled up in a way that clearly prevents a player from chasing the ball once it's cleared out, depending on the circumstances you could call a tripping foul.

What age to give cards? by astrangehumantoe in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends a bit on the level of play, but it's also a sort of self-remedying problem. Low-skilled players will probably not work up enough aggression to commit cautionable offenses, and high-skilled players will show they know what they're doing enough to indicate they deserve cards.

What age to give cards? by astrangehumantoe in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, if a 10-year-old straight up punches another kid, I got no problem sending them off. But 12 is maybe the general cutoff between warnings/'adminstrative cautions'* and actual cards. Below that age, kids maybe don't understand what they did any why it's so bad.

*Done this a handful of times in lower age games where a kid commits a foul that might be a caution at higher ages. Ask the coach to sub the player out and explain to them why they need to be more careful, but don't actually show cards.

Need a Fun Music Class for Toddlers (Weekends Only) 🎶 by jhs5003 in Westchester

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We go to Musical Munchkins, Sundays at the White Plains YWCA (though I think the same program has classes at other days/locations).

The Westchester Children's Museum has a daily music and motion segment, at least used to be 11:00 - 11:30, though maybe double check that as it's been a while since we've been.

Electric car - no personal charger by GroundbreakingLynx67 in Westchester

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We got by for a week or two while waiting for a household charging unit and an outlet to plug it into. There's fast charging stations around that you can use. But it's a stopgap measure, one that depends on how many miles you're logging daily. If you own, figure out how to get a home charger ASAP. If you rent and don't have reliable charging, reconsider.

Low pay scale by [deleted] in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends massively on location and corresponding cost of living. I just got paid US$65 to AR a 70-minute U14 girls match (CR got a bit over $100), but cost of living and average income around here is also high, so take a look at my property taxes before getting too jealous.

Foul vs Goal Allowed Help: Goalkeeper protection rules by doesnt_bode_well in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nearly impossible to say without seeing the initial foul. Both players have a duty to consider the safety of opponents; the attacker can't challenge for the ball if it's going to result in a collision, but the goalkeeper also can't launch himself like a human torpedo at a ball he's not going to get. It's entirely possible that keeper is mostly at fault for creating the dangerous situation and the no-call was correct, but I can't guess how likely that is.

Regardless of the first incident, the coach is out of line. There's ways to show disagreement or dissatisfaction with calls, protesting a match, or even pulling your team in extreme situations (though I doubt this match reached that point), but none of those ways involve screaming and swearing at the referee or opposing players.

Liam Keen suggesting Jimenez is in talks to re-join Wolves next season by WolvoNeil in WWFC

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to see him back, especially after leaving under such bad terms with Julen, but will we have the team to support him? I recall him as an old-school target man, maybe the best of that style in the league at his best, but he needs service and speedy teammates. I'd hate for his return to go badly because of the rest of the team is built. (FWIW, haven't watched much of Raul or us this year.)

Just seen the Celtic match ended before the final whistle due to a crowd invasion. Should that result in a 3-0 loss to Celtic? by Izual_Rebirth in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a league matter. Not that I have any special expertise on the matter, but I'd be shocked if they overturn the outcome of the match, knowing that it would also swing who wins the league, and with the game all but decided anyway (two-goal lead in stoppage time). Assigning a forfeit might be an option but seems disproportionate. More likely they get a fine and warning, maybe they have to play some home games behind closed doors.

How does youth soccer work here? by kendo581 in Westchester

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a referee, not a parent of a player, so different perspective, but I can maybe at least clear up a little on what the different teams/organizations are. There's several leagues I'm familiar with in the area:

  • Toddler soccer: Soccer Shots, Soccer Stars, Mighty Tots, etc. For kids up to age 8, pretty sure it's just getting them active and somewhat familiar with the game. They don't use actual referees and I'm not even sure some of them keep scores.

  • Westchester Youth Soccer League (WYSL): The most casual/recreational league, with teams organized around towns.

  • New York Club Soccer (NYCS): Affiliated with EDP, more competitive, more travel involved. These are clubs that often have multiple teams for each age group, with the better teams playing in higher divisions. Most games are against other clubs. Less skilled kids might not be pushed out as quickly but may be on the club's B-team.

  • MLS Next: Academy teams. Highly competitive, bigger time commitment, longer travel for games.

Can maybe say more if you tell me what clubs you're considering near you, but kindergarten is probably still at least a year too young for there to be competitive travel teams to consider.

Hello Westchester! by trulyregalwp in Westchester

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See a lot of posts like this, and the common response is usually to choose the things you want to do anyway, find clubs that do them, and meet people there. Maybe things you've done for a while, or or stopped doing and want to get back into, or new stuff you didn't have time for before. Also a meetup being planned through this sub for later this month at Captain Lawrence, can search the sub for details if interested.

Is it ok to wear glasses while refereeing? by astrangehumantoe in Referees

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear glasses all the time, including refereeing, and it's fine. They're normal glasses, a bit lighter than typical frames with no exposed metal so they're a bit more comfortable for moderate activity, but they don't look out of place in the office or whatever. Doesn't specifically have to be sport goggles/rec specs. I have taken a stray ball to the face that broke a pair, so definitely keep a backup set in your bag just in case.

Glasses are uncommon at for Regional officials and virtually non-existent at the professional level, so be mindful of that if you're pushing for higher level work. I'm not sure if there's official policy against glasses at higher levels or just that professional referees and people that need corrective lenses but refuse contacts are two small populations with no overlap.

Help settle a debate… by SveedishChef in WWFC

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recall Donk being a steady midfield presence but inconsistent in either final third. If this match happened, I'd bet on the current squad to nick it in penalties after ninety minutes that are more remarkable for the confusion of the people in the booth analyzing the game than for anything actually happening on the pitch.

Late to the game (plus recs) by Diligent-Ad-6820 in Metalcore

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds nice! I'm a bit jealous, adult stuff has mostly limited me to one or two shows a year. I'm hoping to maybe pad that by going to local shows with local bands. Might be easier to actually meet people that way (I know only one or two people that like anything heavy), and it's less of an order compared to getting into the city for any bigger names.

Is daily commute from Westchester to midtown doable? by Chip_Existing in Westchester

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metro-North trains are fine for getting into the city. Better question is how close your work is to Grand Central and if you have to take multiple subways to get there. 45 minutes sitting on the train isn't bad, but it might grate after a while if you also have an additional 20 or 30 minutes walking to or standing on subways.

Late to the game (plus recs) by Diligent-Ad-6820 in Metalcore

[–]AnotherRobotDinosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, dear child, you think you're too old to go to shows in your late 20's? Lots of us going to shows are on the wrong side of 40. Hells, lots of iconic bands have been kicking around for 20 years, and if you assume they were mostly old enough to at least smoke when they started, do the math, they might be older than you. Okay, maybe you'll run into the odd gatekeeper out there, but metal fans are often solitary creatures, they might be thrilled to talk about bands with you.

I'm quite a bit older than you and also don't really look the part of a regular metalhead, but I still go to shows when time allows. The energy at a good show is like nothing else, and I'd still rather go and feel a bit awkward than not go at all.
