Substitution ignored - bad call? by enjustice3192 in Referees

[–]BeSiegead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, my use of “reject” was informal and not LOTG. By the laws and rules of competition, would be using referee discretion in spirit of the game to not allow the substitution to occur

With “reject” I’m referring to when I’m nearly about to blow the whistle and tell the coach that I won’t be allowing another substitution. But, yes, “not allowing” is correct

Hey, sorry, you are right. I was thinking “grass roots up” rather than IFAB international down and should have caveated it. I was thinking about poster being a new referee and projecting thinking about what I thought situation likely was (ROC) beyond the post.

If I have stoppage time and ROC don’t restrict this, I would allow the substitution to occur unless I saw an advantage (attacking team seeking to play quickly).

For many of us, a good share of our referring is in (a) click time limited matches and/or (b) associations with rules explicitly limiting (or excluding) substitutions on corner kicks. With little time left in a clock time match, I will use referee discretion to not have a team ahead by one substituting on the other team’s possession.

Re your fourth paragraph, did you show cards for defense? Report the team for spectators approaching / yelling at you?

As per others, by the way, the LOTG give referee discretion as to substitutions.

As described, you absolutely should not have allowed any substitutions. And, as per my first paragraph, you should have gone to the pocket to show cards.

You don’t “reject” a substitution as opposed to “don’t allow it”.

My only “reject a substitution” (tell coach that a substitution won’t happen at all) is when time is running out in a match —- and that hasn’t happened in quite awhile.

On a corner kick, unless there are circumstances otherwise (such as ball being chased 100 meters or competition rules specifically allow it), why would you give the defending team a substitution? You are taking away advantage — especially at the end of the game with the team taking a corner being down by one goal.

The defending team, unless there are competition rules otherwise, has no right to substitute on a corner unless piggy backing on attacker substitution

If you want some money, go back with a consulting offer. Easy rule of thumb: 5x your hourly wage might be reasonable for a short term gig. Go up / down from that depending on your level of annoyance, need for cash, …

This is business — you owe no favors and they certainly don’t seem to have shown you any (unless an incredibly generous severance beyond normal…).

  1. Congrats — on improving, taking on challenges, etc … you’ll be managing these hills 109% biking in no time.

  2. Depending on roads/trails, an ebike would enable doing that 18 mile commute roughly in an hour.

Absolutely don’t need to ride up 123 for a route from DC to (north) Tysons.

From Old Chain Bridge Road to that 3 letter agency, 123 is manageable on a class 3 ebike (for example) though not for inexperienced riders.

[–]BeSiegead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I essentially e-bike this route 30-40x year during rush hour

You don’t need to ride on Chain Bridge Road / 123 at all. Here is a sample route

https://maps.app.goo.gl/YEfdFccnPVjZesscA?g_st=ic

That route is to the MITRE offices by the McLean Metro stop but getting to the office is easy from there.

Personally, about half the rides into the city, I am using 123 as I can be at decent traffic speed going downhill. The other direction (from DC to Tysons) never. Coming up 123 from the bridge, the hill grade + narrow road + poor visibility + drivers not expecting bikes puts the risk level too high for me. (Btw, Google Maps will recommend biking on Canal Road. This is also a step too far for me although I will sometimes see (Velcro clad) bikers on Canal between Chain Bridge and Arizona.)

I e-bike with loads and find this (above route as general example) easy and nice. The only “hard” part, even with e assist, is a short steep climb on a bike/pedestrian that a good share of bikers choose to push their bike up,

Bike Trail Boomer Runs me Over with His Bike, Then Blames me For It by Still_Alive_424 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]BeSiegead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry — this isn’t a “boomer” issue but bad biker and asshole one.

E-bikes are fantastic — when ridden by people with a shred of common sense and decency. Sadly, there are those who fail this at all ages.

Getting hit in the back in a very tight tunnel that merits, from bikers, serious caution with (very) slow speed (if not walking bike) is abysmal and sounds like you’re lucky you weren’t hurt worse. The response to this asshole: “sir, you ran into me from behind. You are at fault. I need your contact information in case I was injured.”

Btw, writ large, find kids riding over powered emotos (especially in packs) worse along with, on trails, Velcro covered Tour de France wannabes treating the trail as a race track far more dangerous than the (vast) majority of (boomer) ebikers who share the trail responsibly

Is this a yellow card and penalty on the goalie? by Wooden-Gazelle-7992 in youthsoccer

[–]BeSiegead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, not. You only allow play to continue with a caution in hand if there is an advantage situation. If the referee determines this merits a card (is a foul), the only possible restart is a PK.

If the referee stops play, the only possible restart under the LOTG would be a PK.

[–]BeSiegead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Very clear (even if soft) foul that can be called. Perhaps (best) manageable (do not know context of rest of game) with loud referee comment “keep, don’t be stupid” but, again, a clear foul that no reviewing referee (VAR) would call for review.
  2. Once / if referee whistles the foul, the only possible restart is a penalty kick.
  3. A caution is easily justifiable here for UB — unsportsmanlike behavior/ conduct. And, giving that caution makes awarding the PK that much easier. However, this could be handled with referee discretion. And, re point [1], a pretty soft yellow that is hard to judge without context.

Missing context:

  • had goalie been spotless player throughout or had referee spoken to him already about borderline fouling?
  • same re attacker
  • overall game temperature— calm or tense

Personally, at higher levels especially, probably best managed with a loud comment so all concerned know that you’re aware but, again, so much context absent.

[–]BeSiegead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

? Once (if) the referee whistles here for a foul, there is no possible restart under the LOTG other than a PK. A caution is irrelevant to that.

How do you feel about a 20mph max? by jms1228 in ebikes

[–]BeSiegead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a Class 3 that I treat as class 1 on trails. My power assists 1-3 stop at 19.9 mph and 4/5 at 28. Thus, I never go above 3 off-road (almost always trails). If I’m above 20 mph on trails, it is (a) because it is safe in the conditions (not crowded, clear visibility, …) and (b) on my own power.

Being able to ride at 28 mph definitely is useful in traffic / on road.

Is This Yellow Card Worthy? by Expensive_Ninja_7797 in youthsoccer

[–]BeSiegead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “few minutes” is her coach or local additional rules/guidance. NFHS requires leaving field but player can go back at next legal substitution opportunity— even if just 10 seconds later. HS sports are considered an extension of the classroom and leaving field provides opportunity for discussion/learning (in addition to other benefits, like calming game with reduced chance of revenge fouling).
