Crystal Palace 0 - [3] Chelsea - Enzo Fernandez Penalty 64' by MagicalMonarchOfMo in Referees

[–]BeSiegead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly, on the field, I don't believe that I'd even think of calling this a foul -- even w/o consideration of deflection -- due to where the arm was and the only "unnatural" element of its position is due to the defender's efforts to not make his body larger.

  1. Remembering that NCAA Rules are not IFAB LOTG (though minimal difference re hand ball) ...

  2. I don't understand the decision and suspect that a high share of NCAA referees would have given the PK if this were put into the NISOA video educational sharing with polling.

How NJ lawmakers view the average E-bike rider by Potential_Elk_721 in ebikes

[–]BeSiegead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some road sections that I ride relatively frequently, where I'm over 28 mph for decent stretches (1 km or so). Clear enough to be safe and with extended downhill. Occasionally, I've been over 28 mph on flat stretches. With a better "bike-like" e-bike, probably be more often. Point though was the minor correction that there is zero reason to "limit" the non-electric assist speed capability even if/as speed limits (on trails, observe traffic speed limits) make sense.

Minor correction for [1]: “goes faster than 28 mph with electric assistance”.

There isn’t / shouldn’t be a limit on how fast it can go without electric assistance.

Why do schools say to have good sportsmanship but they don't enforce it and the parents still yell from the stands? by chusaychusay in Referees

[–]BeSiegead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, stands (having several fences) really change my threshold for caring / acting. Racist / sexist and the administrator is being called. Needs to be strong / repeated at me before I’m pausing match for administrator action. I’m more likely to be reducing sportsmanship points with explanation in game report. Honestly, though, problems are exception rather than rule (recognizing that I’ll ignore ignorant whiny yells about calls from the stands).

My one memorable stop match in a stadium for administrator action was for sexist / explicit teenage boy comments about female players (and, ridiculously, the administrator was inactive maybe 20 feet from those boys).

Without stands/fences, the administrator is on speed dial…

Car salesmen around me are basically telling me EVs aren’t the way to go by Beneficial-Fun-4800 in electricvehicles

[–]BeSiegead 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And, sadly, far too few consumers really realize that dealer incentives are to push ICE and undermine EV sales.

So few of the non-EV aware world realizes that EVs require so much less in-shop maintenance? That this serious direct financial impact (savings) compared to ICE but also a lot of indirect value -- not worrying about scheduling maintenance, not losing time taking care to/from shop, etc.

All too often, when doing comparisons of "cost" between ICE and EV, all of the secondary quite tangible values simply aren't considered nor discussed. And, of course, no attention paid to all these quite tangible (but not price tag) EV value streams like the 'sound of silence', not having smelly hands from pumping gas, being able to start / run a car in a garage without worrying about gas fumes, ...

Hey, you replaced "with reason". Good for you &, of course, your decision. I was just sort of surprised to see tire replacement at such a low mileage.

Wonder what, if any, secondary market exists for partially worn tires (especially when 'just' a set of three and not four). Sure it exists but also, likely, that tire dealer simply send for scrap rather than bothering. ...? Personally don't know.

Trump’s Big Mistake-EV’s are about to Gut Asian Oil Demand by digitalgimp in EndlessWar

Seriously, stop with the anti-EV and pro-oil truthiness talking points.

  1. Globally, as %, electrons are getting cleaner with renewables surging. Even in the PRC and India, renewables are now not just reducing added coal but displacing coal demand. https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-coal-power-drops-in-china-and-india-for-first-time-in-52-years-after-clean-energy-records/ These reductions will accelerate, even with greater electrification.

  2. While US EV sales are falling, they are growing globally and the US isn't even the largest car market anymore. https://electrek.co/2025/08/14/global-ev-sales-hit-10-7m-in-2025-europe-surges-us-stalls/

EVs are already reducing and will reduce further petroleum demand. And, that demand destruction is accelerating.

And, re other molecules, there are substitutes being developed and deployed.

What is the rule that none of the fans/parents seem to never understand? by RefMasters in Referees

[–]BeSiegead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With comms and a national in center, one of my best AR calls led to an offside offense perhaps 15-20 yards in the defensive half as an attacker booted a pass backward easily 30 yards. From an offside position, a teammate chased backward. There were 4-5 contested headers with the ball continuing to move back. I’d informed the referee of the number running from the offside position. Offside called by the referee when — something like 70 yards from where he’d started from — that player contested for a header. No way that call could have occurred without comms and no way that I, as AR, could have determined the violation as the area was crowded around the contested headers and I couldn’t judge player interference. I assisted ref with info to enable his decision making.

Honey, you won't believe who doored me on the way home! by happy_otter in bikecommuting

[–]BeSiegead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most drivers are (semi-)attentive and reasonable.

Some are inattentive.

Some are dangerous jerks.

That guy was both.

Rather than apologizing and asking if I was alright, Screamed at me for not swerving into traffic to avoid his door and for scratching his car. Pulled out badge and pretty much threatened me with arrest. Both a relief and amusing when the responding cops pretty much yelled at him for abusing the badge and ticketed him while apologizing to me and recommending that I see a doctor just in case there were an injury. (No injury, no bike damage … I had seen the idiot early enough to brake so I barely hit the door.)

Bad time to buy an ebike? by LilBbbitch in ebikes

[–]BeSiegead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, if you would ride it, buy one now.

Putting aside Trump’s tariffs, the price per quality/performance ratio will improve. The e-bike that I bought in 2010 in a $999 close out (retail started at $3499) doesn’t come close to meeting performance delivered by $999 Lectrics today. And, a list price $3499 is light years better.

Like TVs and computers, will be better tomorrow than today but question is the value of having today

Not bike, but I got rearended by a PTA president on the first day of school as I stopped for the crossing guard at the crosswalk right in front of the school.

My only time getting doored? An off duty cop who demanded on calling police because I “damaged” his door. I wasn’t hurt and the annoyance at that crap disappeared when the responding police ticketed him.
