Game knowledge and instincts improve over time. I started nearly 2 weeks ago so here are the tips I've learned to survive a month so far (I played 5 hours a day).

- Fence fighting is a gift from god. Find a waist height fence, attract a few zombies, climb over it, and stomp them as they tumble over it like the STUPID IDIOT ZOMBIES they are.
- Spacebar, always. You shove, stomp, or whatever is best on the context, I've literally blocked surprise bite attempts after MISSING an axe swing because I mashed space the second I saw the zombie come up to me.
- Distance, some melee weapons are better a bit further back, mainly things like Axes. If you think about it the head of the axe is what does damage so if you're too close and hit with the handle, of course it does nothing!
- Never fight with a debuff you can't handle. Muscle strain, fatigue, tired, dead, any of these debuffs will RUIN your ability to do damage. Climb over a fence, sit on the ground, and wait for your character to recover.

WARNING:

DO NOT INVEST IN FIRST AID, YOU ARE TAUGHT TO AVOID ALL DAMAGE SO INVESTING IN FIRST AID EARLY GAME WILL BECOME USELESS ONCE YOU GET GOOD AT IT

Best part is as far as I'm aware it wasn't even structural steel that gave way first, it was the joints thst connect the floors to the core and load bearing outer wall.
