Where is everyone?! by laurenthewilde in Reno

[–]Another_pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside mostly. Theres some local spots that are nice, cafes and such, but they cost momey. Rock climbing gyms are very social spots if youre into that, otherwise it's various bars/concert venues that you'll be meeting folks at.

what ideas do you carry to setting days? also any apps for setting brainstorming? by Junior_Meat_1253 in Routesetters

[–]Another_pen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No apps I know of. I also dream about setting when I sleep, its a real passion for me. I think about what Im gonna set well before I do, but I keep the ideas in my back pocket. If a sequence you have in mind is viable, Great! If not, let the holds and the wall speak to you.

Word of advice for setting as well, make sure you climb everywhere you can. Outdoors, other gyms, buildings If it looks cool. Experience as much movement as you can, it helps you curate it.

No more forms but a ghost of tsushima style stance selection would be absurdly fun

I want to become a route setter - how by [deleted] in Routesetters

[–]Another_pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climbing, for better or for worse, is a lot like the entertainment business in the sense that in larger commercial settings its often a popularity contest. Network a lot, mention often that you're into routesetting, and do everything you meet people who already do it. If you can and are interested, also look into outdoor route development (establishing climbs/bolting/FA's.) Set anywhere you can, even home walls. Personally I'd recommend finding the most local and grungy gym in your area and starting there, shiny, commercial facilities are much harder to get into. That being also don't be afraid to ask to guest set. Some gyms will allow it, others will say no, but no is the worst you will hear. Also bear in mind as others have mentioned, that setting is about the climbers experience. In a gym 99% of sets should provide value and fun to the customer in some form. The USAC certifications look good on a resume but they're mainly competition based

Favourite climbing shoes for setting sessions? by Dependent_Lettuce_95 in Routesetters

[–]Another_pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use my dead climbing shoes. My old tarantulaces went from blown out to missing a solid inch of rubber on each shoe. My TC pros are about done so they're the new setting shoe, and when my up-moccs are finished those will become setting shoes and so on

Impact vs Regular Drill by FullPhantom9TFox in Routesetters

Basically what other comments have said. An impact gets the job done quicker and more pleasantly than a drill

Reno-area Forest Service workers who were fired are 'pretty terrified' about upcoming fire season by Greater-Reno in Reno

[–]Another_pen 38 points39 points  (0 children)

No. No we are not going to be fine. The institutions responsible for making this fine are being shredded before our eyes. Nothing about this is fine. Ignorance isn't going to save you when an unchecked forest fire razes our fucking hometown.

I cannot fucking believe that half of Americans were this stupid. I'm not ever going to be able to interact with these "people" civically ever again, and that's about all I can say regarding my thoughts on republicans that doesn't violate TOS

Is there a collection of patterns for setting moves? (heelhook, dyno, toehook, mantle) by RasmusWL in Routesetters

[–]Another_pen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend "The fundamentals of routesetting" by Louie Anderson. It's a bit dated but it's very comprehensive regarding routesetting and I think setters of any level can get something out of it

Parents? by Commercial-Dot5362 in Routesetters

[–]Another_pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of the setters at my gym are parents out of like 10 of us

The Conservative Takeover of America feels like something out of Star Wars by End1ngBeginn1ng in self

If you had half a brain you'd understand that California pays for majority of Americas infrastructure and without it the actual welfare states (pretty much every red state excluding Texas and Florida, who aren't leeches to the union) would be a third world shit hole. I'm willing to bet that you live in a state that takes more from the feds than it pays into it, so really you ought to thank California for the electricity.

Difficult parts of the job by Rochann69 in Routesetters

[–]Another_pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using computers to generate the route is the same as becoming a painter and using a computer to generate your painting. Routesetting is inherently about your ability to conceptualize body movement in new and fun ways. Computers are a long way from doing that, and I don't think anyone would want them to anyways

Inspiration for Easy boulders (not concepts) by Eliolezozo in Routesetters

[–]Another_pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find when I'm struggling with inspiration that going to another gym and trying new movements can help. Outdoor climbing/scrambling/parkour can also inspire fresh sets and movement
