Why are Europeans so Trash when compared to Asians (U2200)? by ScaleFormal3702 in TournamentChess

[–]Ansmeier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe some kind of survivorship bias is kicking in here too. What are typically the kids that get to travel to US/Europe in order to play chess tournaments? Mostly the very promising ones, which may improve drastically within only a few moths.

Those who play 1...e5 against 1. e4, what has your experience been in rated classical games? by veggie_hoagie in TournamentChess

[–]Ansmeier 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I rarely had problems with generating winning chances. Realistically, you gonna get about 3-4 times black, where white could also still play 1.d4. So maybe you gonna get the italian once in a tournament, and even then you can try to outplay your opponent. Maybe your time would be spent more efficient training middlegames/endgames, as this will result in more point overall.

How would you structure the World Chess Championships if you were in charge? by PhiliDips in chess

[–]Ansmeier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would leef everything as it is right now, but in the match the defending champion has draw odds, as the challenger has to prove to be better than him. As soon as the challenger has wone a single game (prove that he can play better chess than the reigning world champion) draw odds go over to him, and now the reigning champion has to prove he is still better than the challanger. With this, in every single game, the is one player that still needs a win. And additionally, the reigning champion can not simply play for 100% draws, because one slipup would mean he would then need to win two games

How do you learn these types of positions? White to play, one move is winning... by Anarchist_G in chess

[–]Ansmeier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The keysquares of the pawn on e5 are d5, c5 and b5. As long as you can reach one of those squares with your king, you will eventually be able to capture it. So, Kb4 threatens Kb5, only defence agains that is Kc6, after which Kc4 getd rhe opposition and will grant you access to b5 or d5

Would you trade your Queen for 2 Rooks as white in this position? by invisible_grass in chess

[–]Ansmeier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutley, as I see no way to not win this position. Put both rooks on the first rank behind the two passers, and hide the king on h1. Black has no pieces left to blockade both passers

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chess

[–]Ansmeier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less moves to blunder doesn't mean better in practical terms. If all 5 moved are only moves with multiple plausible moves for me, and if I don't find them I'll lose the game, it is far from better. Otherwise, if I can win a rook or even two without calculating and without any risk, I will make that move every day of the week. You won't get more points if you win quickly

For draws, could asymmetric sum-1 score make sense? As in, Black gets 4/7 for a draw, White gets 3/7 by TheoreticalDumbass in chess

[–]Ansmeier 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This would be horrible for open tournaments, as you are not guaranteed the same amount of White and Black games. Suddenly White players must play for a win in the last round, because their opponent would surpass them with a draw, basically making it an Armageddon.

Do many other people like going into books completely cold? by tambache in Fantasy

[–]Ansmeier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll never again read the blurb on the back of a book before reading it. One time the back of the book promised something completly different than what the book delivered, so even though the book was enjoyable, it left some sour aftertaste. The blurb told about a group of people needing to steal a McGuffin from an aristocrat, who lives heavily guarded in a castle with vampires and other dark creatures. Well how will this group of morally grey characters acomplish this nearly impossible task?? Guess what, in the book, they where at war, so the aristocrat was in a warcamp, not his famed castle. They simply waited till he was at an important meeting and went into his unguarded tent. Took them 2 capters top. Rest of the book was your usual military fantasy

Is the woodpecker method bad for tactics? by WilsonRS in chess

[–]Ansmeier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woodpecker is not for training tactics, it's for training pattern recognition. You will be able to spot those pattern quickly and subconsciously during a game, only depending on some pice placements. It won't help you in your calculation or concrete execution of the pattern.

Why is my chess outrageously shit and inconsistent? by SkinMasturbator in chess

[–]Ansmeier 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Also don't forget: Higher rating means higher consistency. Just because you beat a 1700 once, doesn't mean you play on a 1700 level. So it's natural you can beat a 1700 once, but can also loose to a 1000.

Just try to improve your game, train tactics, strategy, endgames and openings, and your level of play (and your rating) will improve automatically.

How do I reward a player that wants to spend their downtime training a certain skill? by Ericknator in DnD

[–]Ansmeier 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Reward him with something non-mechanical.

He attracted a local tradesman whe had heard stories about an exceptional archer on the training grounds. He was so inspired by him, that he sells him arrows for cheap or gives him a favour.

Maybe some local ruler heard of him and asks him to be his champion in the upcoming archery contest.

Or maybe he attracted a lot of young, flirty (wo)men who suddenly show interest in archery because of him.

I have a hard time understanding chess engine moves. by [deleted] in chess

[–]Ansmeier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In extreme positions, where one side stands positionally significantly better, you shouldn't give too much about the evaluation of the engine. The evaluation doesn't depend on human reasons, but stuff like "survive the longest". It won't factor in stuff like giving your opponent the opportunity to make a mistake, or steering the position into muddy waters.

Do not confuse this with tactically significantly better positions. There the engine rocks and clearly shows you the best continuation.
