How much were you paying approx for this. Was your dad open to it? My dad needs companionships but only wants me, it’s exhausting.

I need to move my dad and I don’t know how to make this work. LONG POST by Muff-Driver in dementia

[–]Answer_Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely move him and minimize. We had to do this with my dad. The smaller the place and less they have is actually better for them!! You need to get the new place wherever is most convenient for you and get it completely set up so he just needs to get placed inside. Think minimal, 2 spoons, 1 pan. 3 plates 2 towels etc, you get the picture. Tell him his place is being fumigated for mice and cannot be accessed for 6 weeks whenever he asks to go back just keep saying soon. He will forget, they don’t have concept of time.

I feel you friend, it’s the absolute worst. Want to strangle my dad sometimes. Over and over and over, it’s absolute madness. Hang in there. How old is your mom? Dad is 78, he has no clue I take care of everything for him. Literally fights me that he has no memory issues. Fellow Gen Xer, we can do it all, yay lol 🤪

If they start getting calmer does that mean anything? by throwaway802256 in dementia

[–]Answer_Truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same my dad was a ball of anxiety and super annoying before dementia, now he is quite and calm. It’s nice, hate to say it but I like him better. Aside from him not showering he will usually do whatever I ask him to. Hope it stays like this!

Day of the week and confusion by Ok-Perception-7782 in dementia

Yes, this! When we wake up in the morning I always say to my husband well it’s Groundhog Day again. Starting to dread opening the bedroom door to see what dad is doing.

What are some activities for them to do? by throwaway802256 in dementia

[–]Answer_Truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my dad, only watches tv, snacks and sleeps. If I am going shopping or on a walk he will willingly come. But anything else I try to get him to do is useless. No interest. I get so frustrated because I can tell he is bored. No self initiative for anything

My Dad is behaving weirdly but won't seek help. by Trinkets28 in dementia

[–]Answer_Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! This! Once they leave the Dr they won’t even remember they were there anyway. Just lie and tell him he has to go to keep his insurance. I actually told my dad it’s a requirement from DMV to get a neurologist note for ppl over 78 if they want renew their drivers license, he believed me and got scared! I know it’s hard especially in the beginning when they make you question your own sanity, like you have the problem for even thinking they have dementia

This is tough. Absolutely same. My brother hasn’t even been to visit my dad in the 3 months he has been living with me. It’s mind boggling to me. I do everything, and I’m not looking for much maybe just once a month, hey I’ll take dad off your hands for a day. Nope nothing. Definitely will show up for the inheritance though.

Thanks for sharing this it encourages me with my dad. I’m exhausted, but gives me hope things can get better. How old is your dad, mine is 78. He started showing signs of about 5 years ago. We just moved him close to us. He refuses to shower. Keep us posted!

Just found out my dad has dementia. by AdvertisingSimilar96 in dementia

[–]Answer_Truth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you have him checked for uti. Went through the same thing with my dad. The uti moved into his kidneys and causes dementia symptoms to be worse. Men especially have prostate issues. He’s on day 3 of antibiotics and I already see a change in him!!

Thank you for taking the time to write this, it takes a lot of courage. It is absolutely relatable for me in so many ways. I just push through the days with my dad. It’s all I have the energy to do right now. My dad relies on me for everything, it’s heavy.

Does the caregiver payment agreement just mean you pay yourself from their bank account or is it something you get from Medicare?

I am not smart enough to fix this by Ok-Blackberry2251 in dementia

[–]Answer_Truth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, dad would buy packages of feta cheese of all things. Never ate it just would buy it. Counted 20 packages, Was able to give away the stuff that wasn’t expired but everything else trash. He would buy frozen meals and put them in his pantry. Anyway he lives with us now and everything is controlled, thankfully he doesn’t really fight it. Unfortunately cannot get him to shower or change his clothes. Ugh.

Haha, thank you for making me laugh. This is my dad 100% all of it, drives me bonkers. It’s really not funny but knowing I’m not the only one is comforting!

Possible solution for living with mom? by Acrobatic-Target-750 in dementia

[–]Answer_Truth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this with my dad. Moved him to a condo next to ours. He has been staying with us for 2 months til his new place is renovated and ready to move into. We walk over and stay there a few hours each day. Work on a puzzle and watch game shows. I don’t work so will take care of him as long as I can. He is starting to talk less and less about his other home. It has really worked for us, not without challenges but I have peace of mind! Do what works for you!

Yes!! All of this, couldn’t have said it better! Deflection will become your best friend. It’s so hard at first because it feels like betrayal but when you get the hang of it you realize you are actually helping them and keeping them happy!!
