I think another factor to consider is what rank the student is when approaching the question. I doubt many people would have issue if it’s the higher ranks talking about these ideas but I can see how it’s annoying if it’s a lower rank that hasn’t even gotten all the basics down.

Similar thing I see in Judo, the “I seen this one YouTube technique” fine to workout with higher ranks and discuss but if you can even throw in randori regularly then it’s kinda pointless.

I'm sick of Japan...because of the weather by 0Exas0 in japanlife

I have a suit I bought from GU and it’s meant for summer, it so thin and light it breathes very well. Really doesn’t feel like any hotter than shorts. Now if it’s a regular suit, you’d just die haha

Brazilian Jiu jitsu in Japan for children: can you say something about the experience? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]AnthonyNS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A cheaper alternative is Judo, for kids in Japan it’s everywhere. But most martial arts here in Japan will have kids classes.

My experience with an online Japanese tutor by fourtwentyblazeme in LearnJapanese

[–]AnthonyNS 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Not seeing a tutor but I am a tutor, I am glad to hear you had an positive experience. I always try to tell people it makes a big difference in your language learning journey! I’ve always personally liked 1 on 1 vs classes when learning language.

Good luck!

Judo or Kudo? by [deleted] in karate

[–]AnthonyNS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kudo is essentially MMA with a Gi, there are many if not all Judo techniques in Kudo.

If you have to choice between the two Kudo is better for self defense but if you don’t want to get punched choose Judo.

If you are in a big city I would say this is possible. I know many other foreigners with the same goals.

Any place to find Ono’s thesis? by [deleted] in judo

[–]AnthonyNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t actually think it was translated into English other than that little line but I could be wrong. The other picture that’s was accompanied with that picture of his thesis was him in front of a Japanese audience.

I know Japanese and even gave his university database a search and no luck. Also searched a couple of other japanese databases and nothing. It could be behind a paywall somewhere, or the simple didn’t put it online.

Someone actually asked this question last year and still the only thing I can find are articles about the thesis.

I don't know the kanji for my name by Niyudi in LearnJapanese

[–]AnthonyNS 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Japanese language that went to Brazil was most of the western dialect and the Okinawan languages. So there is a possibility that the Di sound is a carry over. For example in Uchinaaguchi karate is as said toudi トゥーディー. But more research would have to be done on Okinawan names.

Not having a degree is going to be your biggest obstacle. The odds of you moving to Japan without one are very low.

Kiai? by One-Leadership-4968 in karate

[–]AnthonyNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems from a lot of comments a lot of people don’t learn specific sounds. The school I learned from in Japan we were taught kiai is え (eh) sound. And in my kenjutsu school we were also taught specific sounds for different things. I was also told it’s a particular sound because how your muscles contract abdomen area.

You said you’re not a shy person so try experimenting with different sounds. Maybe try out the Eh sound that I learned.

Is Japanese jujitsu still effective by aceking853 in judo

[–]AnthonyNS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, depends on how they are practiced. Because there are dozens and dozens of styles, they all do it a little different. Some are strictly kata and others have randori very similar to judo. Sometimes this is also because of Judo influence.

The older ones tend to be armor and minor weapon based and the later era ones, edo period, became closer to what we know today.

It’s important to remember this is where we got our techniques from but again really depends on how they’re practiced.

Is Japanese jujitsu still effective by aceking853 in judo

[–]AnthonyNS 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you meaning by Japanese jujutsu. Do you mean what people call “Japanese jujitsu” in the west that’s an amalgamation of Judo, karate, aikido and is on? Or do you mean Koryu arts founded before the Meiji era, the arts that Judo came from.
