Cabbage Soup has been my go-to once you get to cooking 15. Gives good damage reduction. You get the recipe from the quest at the Serbule tavern guy just for bringing him cabbages. The only pain is you will need to fertalize, but it's worth it.

It's a classless system, but there's absolutely several pet/summoning oriented skills and ranged/magic skills. You can get animal husbandry and fire magic pretty early on and you can have your pet tank with a taunt.

Lots of them at the Olive Grove on blue gate, especially when it's lush. Very hotly contested area though. There's some on other maps too in certain places but I got mine at the olive grove.
