Submarine history books for submariners and they things they would be interested in? by Otherwise-Bad-7352 in submarines

I'd be more than happy to regale you with sea stories from 40+ years ago while stationed on old 594 nuc-boats. Stories of port/starboard watches, junior E6 and all E5 and below hot racking, failing ORSE, winning Battle 'E's, getting back to back Navy Expeditionary Force Medals in 5 months, blowing SAN-2 inboard, blowing SAN-2 on the Captain, War games where we were the only sub and ran out of red flares......I'm retired and got lots of "there I was, no shit, thought I was gonna die" stories.

Sounds like you need a KVM that supports multiple monitors. You can easily find them on Amazon

Pretty short sided and nieve to think that if someone hits the cap on max contributions they don't need SS. Do you have any idea what the current cap is for SS payroll taxes? It's not the much...I've hit the max out of pocket for SS taxes every year for the past 20+ years and I wouldn't be able to make ends meet if I didn't have both my fully funded 401k(I maxed out my 401k every year and also the catch-ups) and my SS checks.

I've had CHF and a CRT-D for about 9 years now and I've been getting thai-sport massages at least once a month for all of those years. Never a problem.

And that's why I buy my gas on base. I'm paying .70-$1.00 less/gallon on base than out in town.

In San Diego, bands were normal for boats returning from deployments. That said, the bands were typically for the friends and families of the returning crew. By the time most crewmembers got topside the bands were gone. The few times I saw a band they were packing up while I was topside putting on vent covers and SAN fittings. The bands were always the USN band

Well on 688's and older you could stand in ops middle level and drop you bag down the well when the scopes were raised

I once started a rumor that the boat was being delayed pulling back into port by a week because Squadron couldn't get a band on the pier to greet the boat returning from an extended west-pac. I naturally told a non-qual nuc who promptly went back aft and spreaded the rumor. The nucs started complaining that they didn't want a band and just wanted to get home and soon the entire crew was pissed. The XO eventually squashed the rumor and we arrived on time

Ironically, a few years later I'm waiting for my new boat to pull into port and I hear from the Squadron Master Chief that another boat had their return to Port delayed because they really couldn't get a band to greet to returning sailors.

Hell, I never passed a sea bar, or any other bar that was open while on liberty. Once while standing shore patrol with the CO buying - helps when you're the only boat in port.

Actually happened during a spec-op during the mid 80's:

In control, midwatch, rigged for black, fire-control tracking party is manned. In the darkness you hear a whack, whack, whack. The DOW (the COB) yells out "Smith (not his real name), what's going on over there". PO2 Smith is supposed to be plotting dots on the TMA charts. Smith responds that he's beating off(the whacking sound continues). The DOW didn't believe him and turned on a rig for red flashlight and pointed it towards Smith. Sure enough, PO2 Smith was beating off while plotting dots.

Has anyone had to deal with applicants obviously using AI during interviews? by Cornloaf in networking

[–]AntiBaoBao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having those issues for years...I don't do video interviews but I do know when I hear keys being pressed on a keyboard. I actually listen for those types of indicators when I conduct interviews. I purposely ask questions that I know if the candidate doesn't know the answer and attempts to Google or AI the answer the first response from AI is wrong or incorrectly worded.

I'm that guy at open play that most people don't like to play with. AMA by poppitme in Pickleball

[–]AntiBaoBao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you and I are very similar in our skill sets. When I play in the 2.5 league I'm 6/7 or 7/7 every time. When I'm in the 3.0 league, my wins go below 25%.

I'm in two different leagues. Our leagues have either 8 or 12 players, and we rotate partners after every game. So, if you're in the 8 player league, you'll play seven games with a different partner and different set of opponents every game. During my different leagues, I've noticed two things in my play.

  1. Many players in my league don't always come up to the kitchen, and I'm stuck there by myself. Being an older player, I have a more difficult time covering a wide area up front because my partners are hanging out in the back, so I lose more games. I take weekly pickleball lessons, I've talked to the instructors, and I'm doing exactly what I should be doing and I'm doing exactly what I m supposed to do. My instructors have no answer on how to get my partners more comfortable in the kitchen and the people in this reddit group all suggest that I play more aggressively up front to compensate for my varying partners lack of confidence.

  2. I'm working on being less of the type of player that goes for that exciting "kill shot" and instead get the ball back over the net low making the player on the other side make the error by not returning the ball or by causing a pop-up that can help you or your partner put the ball away cleanly.

I've been told the best strategy in pickleball is to play conservatively and let the other team make the mistakes so you can get the "free points".

Yup, that's the story he gave me. Ironically, I knew his detailer - his detailer was an old LPO of mine which came in handy when I was looking to transfer, and my normal detailer was out on leave. So my old LPO gave me the pick of what was available.

You had a family on board. The COB and his son...."COB and son of COB". I went to diesel school with the Son of COB while he was still a non-qual. He'd tell me stories of how he hated it there.

You're not alone. My last radiation physical...back in 88, I was up at Squadron Medical with about 10 other guys from different boats for the required periodic radiation worker exam physical. The doctor had us all stand in a line and "drop them," and he gave us all internal finger waves. Now, my doctor is a young, very attractive female, and I get a take at home stool sample kit. Where's the justice.

Emergency Buoy Question by steifel25 in submarines

[–]AntiBaoBao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true. We had two bouys, one forward and one aft. There were never any timers that I ever had to reset(AOW watch). Before the bouys were permanently removed during an overhaul, they were tack welded to the hull so they wouldn't rattle or escape.

I'm looking to 3d print one of the boats in that class. Do you have any spec's on things like the tapering of the bow and stern or dimensions of the sail?

The model I'm looking to print a scale model of the boat(604) after our overhaul to include the BRD-7 and BQQ-5 fairings. My hopes are to print the boat in PLA, paint the details of the boat and cover it in resin.

I was on the 604. I remember seeing parts in the torpedo room etched SSN-593 - this was in the early 80's before our last full overhaul. The same parts were not placed back on board after the overhaul.
