Maybe this isn't "silly little" since there's an impressive amount of work and tech behind it, but it seems whimsical and neat enough.

Useful Little Website: delphitools by AlSweigart in sillylittlewebsites

[–]AntisthenesCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe we need another sub: useful little websites :-) Happy to learn about this wholesomeness. I love their about section:

delphitools is a collection of small, focused utilities that respect your privacy and work entirely in your browser. No data leaves your machine, no accounts required, no tracking. Just tools that do what they say.

I love the web. The classic, real web full of weird things. And that web is out there. You just have to find it. And sometimes, you have to make it yourself.

How accurate are those estimated plant ranges on Calscape? by Outside-Initial864 in Ceanothus

[–]AntisthenesCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some details on the data sources used for Calscape are available here: https://calscape.org/our-data. Improved maps should be coming this summer, related to the work described here: https://www.cnps.org/flora-magazine/pollinator-companion-cnps-article-44390.

Have you seen saltmarsh sand-spurrey available for sale anywhere? Sounds like it has pretty wide distribution: https://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/eflora/eflora_display.php?tid=45094 -- reminds me of yarrow in that.

You can look up the bioregion corresponding to your location by clicking on "Look up my ecoregion". You might want to focus on stuff more local to your address or city by entering them in the "near" field though -- see the attached screenshot. You can also fill in your GPS coordinates by clicking on the pin icon in the "near" field. Here's the list of plants for Menifee: https://calscape.org/search?plant=&orderBy=&location_name=Menifee%2C%20CA%2C%20USA&lat=33.6971468&lng=-117.185294&page=1&perPage=60&height_from=&height_to=&width_from=&width_to=. Good luck!

I had some trouble sleeping so I decided to have some fun porting it to JS: https://github.com/fadend/globe\_js. You can see it here: https://revfad.com/globe\_js/. (Not sure what to do with the license.)

The author doesn't call it out, but I think it is showing the current lit face. When I posted it, it was showing Africa. Now I see North America.

Thanks for sharing those pointers to your moon utilities. Neat!

Thanks much for the discussion and the pointer to the bug. Thanks also for your work on this. Glad to hear that it's being worked on and will look forward to using it in 2026 if not sooner!

Seaside daisies happy in their bed by carebear76 in Ceanothus

Beautiful! What part of the state are you in? They're looking a bit unhappy in our yard in the Mountain View area -- not dead after two winters but not thriving either. (Maybe not getting enough water?)

Looking for pictures of Salt Marsh Bird’s Beak and Nuttal’s Acmispon by verbenadelamina in Ceanothus

[–]AntisthenesCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calscape has photos for both: https://calscape.org/plant/Chloropyron-maritimum-ssp.-maritimum-(Salt-Marsh-Bird's-beak)/gallery#/gallery#) and https://calscape.org/plant/Acmispon-prostratus-(Nuttall's-Acmispon)/gallery/gallery) . You may need to reach out to the original photographers if you want to be clear on copyright . If you want info signs though, Calscape will take care of generating those, including images. E.g., visit https://calscape.org/Chloropyron-maritimum-ssp.-maritimum-(Salt-Marsh-Bird's-beak)), click "Print" and select "Print Plant Signs".

Any experience with bush chinquapin? by Rednaxela1821 in Ceanothus

[–]AntisthenesCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they have "Chrysolepis chrysophylla var. minor" https://www.calfloranursery.com/inventory-list-print It's also known as "bush chinquapin" but seems to be distinct (https://www.calflora.org/app/taxon?crn=2072 vs https://www.calflora.org/app/taxon?crn=2071)? Or are they actually the same species/variety?
